1R01ES023029 (PI: Gohlke) 02/01/2015 – 10/31/2019 4.2 calendar NIH/NIEHS Project Title: Environmental exposures across urban and rural communities in the Deep South The major goal of this project is to determine if differences in heat and air pollution exposure exist between urban versus rural communities in Alabama. We are working with community organizations to measure neighborhood level and personal exposure in urban versus rural communities to aid in development of adaptation strategies to reduce risks of heat-related illnesses. VT GCC (PI: Gohlke) 10/30/17-06/30/18 Student Support Global Change Center Seed Grant Project title: A synthetic population approach to modeling human health and the environment: A tool for adaptation planning The goal of this pilot project is to analyze VA birth records for trends in birth weight as it relates to temperature estimates derived from satellite and ground level datasets, in urban and rural environments, over the past 30 years. Powell River Project (PI: Gohlke) 10/30/17-06/30/18 Student Support Virginia Tech Powell River Project Seed Grant Project title: Zooming in on adverse birth outcomes in coalfield regions of Central Appalachia The goal of this pilot project is to estimate surface mine extents in Central Appalachian coal field areas and analyze birth records pre-, during, and post active surface mining for trends in preterm birth and low birth weight. EPA/VDH (PI: Marmagas) 03/25/16-06/15/16 Project Support Environmental Protection Agency/Virginia Department of Health Contract Project title: Home radon testing in Tazewell County, VA The goal of this work is to evaluate radon exposure in Tazewell County by randomly recruiting 300 homeowners to conduct home radon testing. VT GCC (PI: Krometis) 01/01/16-09/30/16 Project Support Global Change Center Seed Grant Project title: How does environmental landscape change shape community and ecological health in the Central Appalachian Coalfields? A pilot study in Tazewell County, Virginia. The goal of this pilot project is to analyze VA vital statistics (birth, death records) for trends in birth weight and primary causes of mortality as it relates to landuse/land cover changes over the past 30 years.

We have focused our initial case studies on examining the effect of an early life stressor under different diets, thereby determining if specific nutrition-environment interactions can be evaluated using this model system. The training program focuses on prevention and intervention research, as applied to the mitigation of environmental and occupational hazards.
