ST. JUDE THE APOSTLE CHURCH, WYNANTSKILL From Fr. Anthony Ligato… Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Epiphany of the Lord is one of the great liturgical celebrations throughout the entire year. The traditional day for celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany is January 6 th but the Church transfers that celebration to the Sunday after the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God (New Year’s). The Feast of the Epiphany is the twelfth day after Christmas and has been celebrated throughout the centuries with great festivals and gift giving in celebration of the arrival of the Magi. The celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord continues what was begun at Christmas in the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In the Birth of Our Savior at Christmas we celebrate that the Word became flesh, the Incarnation. In the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord we celebrate that the revelation of the incarnation is now spreading throughout the world. The Magi, The Three Kings or Three Wise Men, which ever name you would like to use, represents the spreading of that message to all the people of the World. The gifts that the Magi bring are a further revelation of who Jesus Christ is and what he will do not only for the people of Israel but also for the people of the entire world. The gift of gold represents Jesus’ Kingship, as the son of God Jesus Christ takes back the Kingship that was rightfully his before the people of Israel took it away and gave it to an earthly king. Frankincense represents that this babe born in a manger is holy, as scripture says, “let our prayers raise as incense;” Jesus Christ will raise up our prayers in his suffering, death and resurrection. Myrrh was used to prepare the body for burial and the gift of myrrh reminds us of the great sacrifice Christ will offer for our salvation, death on the cross. Each time we join in the once and for all Holy Sacrifice of the Mass we join with the entire Church in offering ourselves as a gift to Christ. All this from three little gifts offered by three strangers to a babe laying in a manger, how much more the gift of ourselves delights our Lord. Yours in Christ, Fr. Anthony RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS It is not too late to join us on Thursday evenings as we explore different topics of the Catholic Faith…any interested parishioner may also join us. EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

60TH

ANNIVERSARY

INAUGURAL CELEBRATION

On Sunday, January 8th, 2012 we will kick off our yearlong celebration of the founding of St. Jude the Apostle Church with the blessing of the banners which will grace the front entrance of the church and the light posts inviting the greater community to join with us as we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee. We will bless the banners at the beginning of each of the liturgies on that weekend and we will recite the St. Jude Novena Prayer together asking for our patron, St. Jude, to intercede for us and give us his blessing in this special year. Throughout the year we will celebrate with special celebrations and events, such as the essay contest which will be open to all children in the parish and school. Our website will have posted how you can register for the essay contest as well as announcing the calendar of celebrations and events as well as a photo album of the history of the parish and of the celebrations in 2012. In March we will have our annual Pasta Dinner which is always a gathering for all those in the parish who love great food and good conversation. In May our Community Service Awards Dinner will celebrate our 60 years by honoring two long time parishioners who have worked hard making St. Jude the Apostle the wonderful community that it is, a warm and welcoming family. We will honor on May 7th Allison Spain Sr. and Johanna Flanigan. On June 3rd we will honor all those who have dedicated themselves to ministry at St. Jude the Apostle for the past 60 years with a special liturgy in which members of the community who have been involved over the 60 years at St. Jude will participate. We will follow this celebration with a reception in Dammann Hall, at which time the essay contest winner will be announced. Continuing the celebration of all those who offer their time and talent in ministry and service, we will have our annual Appreciation Dinner at Franklin Terrace on June 7th.

The actual date of the founding of the parish is July 5th, 1952 and in a tribute to our roots on July 8th at the 11:00am Mass we will go back to the days when Mass was celebrated in the tent. We will pitch a tent in the parking lot and celebrate Mass; it will be our own tent revival. Following the tent Mass we will have an old fashion strawberry social. On August 19th we will gather together for our annual parish picnic, which will be held on the parish grounds as a way to celebrate the days when people would gather from all over the area and the nation on the grounds of St. Judes for the Horse shows. It will be an old fashioned picnic with a pie baking contest, sack races, three legged races, a disc jockey playing 50’s music and good food in celebration of our faith as family and friends. Our Fall Family International Food Festival on September 29th will continue the celebrations for our 60th anniversary with a $10,000 raffle, Great Food, entertainment, games, crafts and many other activities. The high point of our celebrations will occur on the actual feast day of St. Jude the Apostle, Sunday October 28th, 2012 when Bishop Howard Hubbard will be the Main Celebrant for our Jubilee Mass at 11:00am followed by a catered light reception in Dammann Hall. Later in the afternoon we will gather at Franklin Terrace Ballroom for a dinner banquet which will include a retrospect of the history of the parish. Throughout the year you will also see the history of the parish in displays at all of these events and in the church and school. The archival/history committee has been working many long months putting these wonderful displays together. Also, we will be publishing a new parish picture book directory in 2012 and you will hear more about it in the coming weeks and months. As you can see it is a year filled with great celebrations, come and be a part of it and bring others with you. Thank you, Fr. Anthony
