Key objectivesAssessment criteria

To describe the function of a Tallit, Kippah and Tefillin and explain their importance to the Jewish faith.To know why prayer is so important to Jewish people.To know who Jewish people are. (look like, live etc)To have an understanding of what prayer is.To know why Jewish people pray – who do they pray to? When do they pray?What a Kippah, Teffllin and Tallit is and what they represent. Engage(30- 45 mins)

Show the children the Teffllin, Tallit and Kippah. Don’t tell them what they are, called or who might wear them. Get the children to discuss and comment on what they think they are, why they might be important and who might where them. What clues can you generate from them to help you guess what they might be?Share ideas and thoughts. Children to record their thoughts on post it notes or stick in photos of items in books and children to record their thoughts around them.

Enquire(30- 45 mins)

Show a picture of someone wearing these items – are they what you thought? What might you like to find out about these items? Begin to generate questions.What questions would we need to ask to find out more about these items, who might wear them and why? (Still don’t give the names or name of the religion)Record questions on flipchart (take a copy for this for children’s books)Prompt the children to think deeply about their questions – discuss open and closed questions, which ones are going to generate the most information?Assessment activity/marker – Give the children (in groups) 5/6 pictures of the Jewish faith (linked to the enquiry unit). Let the children discuss them and share their ideas. Around the outside of the pictures (on A3 paper) let them record their knowledge/thoughts etc. Take photos as a reference for the end of the enquiry.

Explore(2 hours)

Use texts to find out name of the 3 items. Can they spot the items in a selection of books about different faiths – what religion are we finding out about?Guided session -> Who are Jewish people? What do they believe? (Introduce children to the religion through videos, pictures, texts etc)Children to begin to answer their questions.

Evaluate(up to 1 hour)

The children revisit their questions. In addition, the following may be asked to challenge the children: Do you think all Jewish people wear these items?

Do you think they are not important to the Jewish faith anymore? Can you still be a Jew and not wear these items? Why are these items so important to Jewish people?

Have we collected enough information to answer our question? If yes move on to Express, if no then explore more!

Express(1 hour)(This should be guided by the teacher, but be child lead)

Children to answer the initial enquiry question. (Responses must also link to the key objectives)Activities could be: (Ensure there is a balance of AT1 and AT2)

Write a thought bubble next to a Jewish person wearing these items explaining why he/she is wearing them.

Find different pictures of Jewish people praying – are they all the same? Compare and contrast. Draw pictures of each item and annotate them with the correct detail. Take photos of each item import them into word/publisher/powerpoint and create a document

explaining what they have learnt. Make a Teffllin/Tallit or Kippah for a Jewish person, what does it need to look like, be decorated? Why? Annotate with thought/speech bubbles a picture of a Jewish person praying – Children to complete the

thought/speech bubbles as the Jewish person explaining why the pray and how important it is to them. Write a prayer as a Jewish person. Extra: Make their own items to help them pray

Assessment activity/marker – Give the children (in groups) the same 5/6 pictures of the Jewish faith (linked to the enquiry unit). Let the children discuss them and share their ideas. Around the outside of the pictures (on A3 paper) let them record their new knowledge/thoughts following the enquiry. Compare to the beginning of the enquiry unit – celebrate and share – look how much you have learnt!

Judaism Enquiry questions:What can we learn about Judaism from visiting a Synagogue?

Key objectivesAssessment criteria

To know and name the key features of a Synagogue and explain their function.To know describe what the Torah is, how it is used in worship and how you know it is important to Jews.To know how and why Jews pray and worship in a Synagogue.To consider: I wonder why the Synagogue is an important place for Jewish people?To understand the role and significance the Synagogue plays in the life and faith of Jewish people.To describe the job of the Rabbi.

IF A TRIP IS NOT POSSIBLE USE THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS TO IMAGE BEING INSIDE ONE. Engage(30 minutes)

Show the children the enquiry question: What can we learn about the Jewish faith from visiting a Synagogue? What would you like to learn from visiting the synagogue?Put the children into groups and get them to pose questions they would like to answer when in the Synagogue. (See examples below) Use these questions as a basis for the discovery inside the Synagogue. Challenge the children to try and answer as many of the questions as possible.DON’T TELL THE CHILDREN ANYTHING ABOUT THE SYNAGOGUE/ WHAT IS INSIDE IT/WHO RUNS IT ETC, LET THEM DISCOVER IT THEMSELVES WHILST THERE!

Enquire(30 minutes)

You may want the children to find out some information when they go – so provide resources and video clips to help them. However this will reduce the awe and wonder when the children actually go inside the Synagogue.

Explore(2 hours)

Visit to the Synagogue – What can they see/spot? How do you know this is a Jewish place of worship?What does the Synagogue tell you about the Jewish faith? What clues can you find?Interview a Jewish person and a Rabbi– create questions before visiting – Why do you pray? Why is the Synagogue important to you? Who is allowed to worship here?

Use the visit to explain about the Torah, Ark, Ner Tamid and Menorah.Evaluate(30 – 60 minutes)

Evaluate what the children learnt on their visit to the Synagogue.Discuss:Q: Why is the synagogue so important to Jewish people?Q: Which area of the synagogue is the most important?Q: Why do Jewish people go to a Synagogue?A Synagogue is a:A House of MeetingA House of StudyA House of Prayer – what evidence of these 3 roles did you see when you visited? Which role do you think is the most important? Why?

Express(2 hours)

Children to answer the initial enquiry question – have we through our research learnt more about the Jewish faith by visiting a synagogue?Give the children an opportunity to show what they have learnt by creating a model of all or part (e.g. The Torah in the Ark) of a synagogue or poster which is labelled with information about each part and why they are significant and important part of the Jewish faith.Q: If we wanted to hold a Jewish service in the classroom what items would we need to ensure it became a Synagogue?

These questions were posed by the by just giving them the enquiry question and encouraging them to think of open questions using the 5W’sSynagogue questions

How many days is it open? What time does it open and shut?What does it look like inside and outside?How was it built? When was it built and why?When was the first synagogue built?Is there a hall they pray in?

Questions for the Jewish people in the Synagogue

What do you learn in a Synagogue?Who is in charge of the Synagogue? What is their name?How do they choose who will be the head Jew next?When did Jewish believes begin?Do children do the same thing as the adults in the synagogue?Why is the Synagogue special to Jews?When do they put on the tallit, tefflin and kippah?What is the most important thing about being a Jew?Why do they pray?Do they have to say a special prayer to get in?How many people come to the synagogue?Why is there a star that is called the Star of David?

Questions to investigate whilst exploring the Synagogue

What is the Torah? How many passages are there in the Torah?What do they do inside the Synagogue?Do they have any expensive and important things in there?Will you see a model of God in there?What do people worship on?
