A message from your CouncillorWell, here we are again, hurtling towards the end of the year and only a short time left before Christmas – speaking of which, allow me the luxury of a reflection: in my opinion, one of the things that, historically, has kept our society cohesive was that everybody used to celebrate Christmas.

For those, like me, who tend to be agnostic because I’m too uncertain to be an atheist, it didn’t much matter what religion you were because there was something for everybody. You could go to church; you could enjoy the holidays or you could just play with your new toys – kids’ toys or grown ups’ toys. What mattered was that once a year everybody came together – believers and non-believers. It would go on for weeks and they even had a name for it – ‘Christmas time.’ Back when my kids were at kindergarten, featuring in the nativity play each Christmas, they’d

be dressed up with tea towels on their heads, taking turns at being Joseph and the three wise men. It was all a bit of light-hearted fun. Sometimes I get really nostalgic and dig out the photos.

What do we have today? A politically correct generation intent on making a career out of being offended by Christmas celebrations.

And it seems their right to be offended over-rides the right of the rest of us to enjoy the traditional Christmas break, the Christmas spirit and the Christmas gift-giving. Street decorations are now

modest, while Christmas frosting on shop windows seems a thing of the past. It’s now all ‘Happy Holidays’ and non-gender-specific toys.

Well, ultimately, all I can do is to say that, I for one, will be observing Christmas in the way I always have. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Laneway cool comes to CamberwellOne of Camberwell’s busiest laneways that runs between the Sunday Market and Prospect Hill Road was recently transformed into an outdoor masterpiece by Melbourne artist, Stephen Baker.

The artist—best known for his eye-catching ‘Pool Parade’ mural on the façade of Fitzroy Pool—was commissioned as part of a ground-breaking Council initiative to deter graffiti and make Camberwell’s laneways safer and more interesting for pedestrians and shoppers. With his bold choice of colours and instantly recognisable hieroglyphic-inspired style, Baker created a striking two-part mural over the course of a week, singlehandedly transforming this key pedestrian thoroughfare from drab to fab. Entitled ‘Eye of the Beholder’, the mural was supported with funding from the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program to deter illegal graffiti and tagging in the laneway. Not surprisingly, the response from local traders and the community

has been glowing - and Stephen Baker’s public art is just the start.“The site is a known graffiti hot spot and using public art to help deter it is consistent with our Graffiti Strategy,” Councillor Jack Wegman said.“I’m really excited to see this type of streetscape improvement work being implemented at the Junction. It makes a big difference, transforming the way the space gets used.”And Camberwell’s cool quota is set to skyrocket with further laneway transformations in the works. Several other lanes have already been upgraded and others are earmarked for their own overhauls. Features include bluestone paving, improved lighting, greenery and custom-made lightboxes showcasing up-and-coming artists.

Going on holidays? What about Fido? Dogs are social creatures and can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. This may cause them to bark excessively. You can reduce your dog’s distress by maintaining their usual care and routine. Consider organising a pet-sitter or booking a doggy day-care. It is also a good idea to check that your fence is secured to prevent injuries and escapee pets. Barking can significantly impact others and dog owners are ultimately responsible for preventing this nuisance behaviour.
