Being nice to someone you don’t like doesn’t mean you’re fake ..

it means you’re mature enough to tolerate your dislike towards that person.

We extend a warm welcome back to ‘Paige Ens’ who has spent the last

year at home enjoying her new daughter Aria.

The Strength of Jubilee: The Power is life worth living at Jubilee

Jennifer and Gracie My name is Jennifer Bergen and I joined the SJA Pet Therapy program with my dog Gracie in

2009. We started visiting the wonderful residents living at Saskatoon’s Porteous Lodge in December and quickly found people who were thrilled to have a friendly dog come in for scratches. Gracie is always excited to see me put on my uniform. She’ll race down the hallway to the front door knowing she has an important job to do that night. She has her favorites and they shower her with affection, sometimes offering a puppy biscuit or two, and then she settles in for a quick power snooze while I get to visit.

One such favourite person was Grace Soparlo. We met shortly after starting our visits there, and she asked why I named her Gracie. I was ready to share how she had been abandoned in a field as a puppy at two months old. She was skin and bones when friends of mine found her, but they couldn’t keep her as they had farm dogs already. When I rescued her and learned of her hard journey already, I said it was by the grace of God that she survived. The name seemed perfect.

Gracie quickly learned which door was Grace’s, and I could ask if she wanted to see Grace and she would walk into her room and sit for the special apple slices that would be tenderly shared with her. She wouldn’t eat the types I bought for her at home. They had to be the special ones from her friend. Over the years, Grace and I shared many family stories, and I told her of Gracie’s adventures. I even got to meet her children who happened to visit on the same nights. One year we brought in feather boas to dress up for pictures on Gracie’s birthday.

Grace sometimes asked why I wasn’t married and what was wrong with those men. So on one special evening I was happy to share that I was getting married. She was just as excited as any grandma would be!

This past fall I could tell Grace wasn’t feeling as well as she used to, and Gracie would come in and gently lick her hand to let her know that she was there. I would get the apple slices from the fridge for her, so that Gracie could show her some tricks to brighten her day. We were sad to hear of her passing away in mid-December of last year. Gracie kept pushing on the closed door, not understanding why she couldn’t go in to see her friend. A few days later I attended her funeral, sadly unable to bring Gracie with me. I was honoured to share some special moments with the family of a wonderful woman who touched so many hearts, and this dog who was found in a field.

Irene Neufeld is passionate about the British Monarchy. Her love for all things Royal goes back to her childhood. “They are just wonderful as far as I’m concerned,” says Irene. “I think Kate is the crowning glory to it all.” She also enjoys reading up about the young Prince and Princess. “Prince George is getting so big,” says Irene. “Princess Charlotte is so pretty, just like her mother.” Irene is a resident of Porteous Lodge. She is often heard talking about the Royal family. That interest in the Royals got Porteous Lodge staff member Ashley Monk thinking about what she could do to bring a little taste of Britain to Irene. Organizing a “High Tea” quickly came to mind. “I wanted to do something special for Irene,” says Ashley. “I wanted her to feel like she was attending the Queen’s Tea, even if we were 6600 kilometres away.” Organizing a “High Tea” required a bit of research. The first order of business was creating an invitation to be sent to Irene. It needed to be perfect and Ashley didn’t disappoint. “It was a surprise getting the invitation,” says Irene. “The invitation said it was from Queen Elizabeth.” The invitation also provided the date and time and instructed Irene to wear her best fascinator, fit for a Queen. Ashley found perfect hats for both of them to wear. “My hat was navy and had flowers on it,” says Irene. “It fit really well. Her hat was really cute. I don’t know where she got them.” Ashley also put some thought into the table setting. There had to be flowers and lace and a beautiful china tea pot and dishes and of course the appropriate food items typically associated with a “High Tea.” “We had sandwiches and scones on a two tiered serving stand to go with our Earl Grey tea brewing in a tea pot,” says Ashley. “She set it up so cute,” says Irene. “The main topic was the sandwiches she made—little tiny sandwiches. They were as cute as could be and we had no trouble eating them.” And it wouldn’t be a proper “High Tea” without proper manners and etiquette. “I asked Irene if she wanted one lump or two of sugar to go with her splash of cream, with pinkies up of course,” laughs Ashley. Eating tiny sandwiches and sipping tea brought back many memories for Irene. Growing up with sisters, she enjoyed many tea parties as a child. And there were many teas at her church. “I sang in a choir for 25 years,” says Irene. “We had lots of teas, but nothing quite like that.” It was an afternoon Ashley and Irene will never forget. “It was a really nice thing for her to have done for me,” says Irene. “Ashley was always a favourite of mine. She kind of likes me and I like her.” “I felt like I got to connect more on a friendship basis and focus on one-on-one care,” says Ashley. Ashley is hoping their day together creating memories will serve as an inspiration to others. “I hope my colleagues got inspired to create their own events for other residents,” says Ashley. The success of the High Tea is proof that a small gesture-- a small act of kindness-- can often have a huge and lasting impact.

Scott Gibbs is a volunteer for Sunday Church Services; his wife Pat is a resident in Stensrud Lodge. Scott is part of the Saskatoon Railroad Modelers, a group of model railroad enthusiasts who created the miniature train exhibit at the Western Development Museum. He said model railroads have given him a way to preserve his memories of working for CN as new technology took over. What started out as a solitary hobby has become a social one. Members of the group meet at the museum every Saturday morning to work on the small train or their larger setup that sometimes fills vacant galleries at the WDM. In 1991, a group of five men stated building the exhibition. Since the tiny train took its first lap in 1992, it has made more than 433, 000 trips as children push the tantalizing red button that bring the train to life. Scott said model railroading has made his retirement enjoyable.

Thanks to everyone for the quick response and awesome teamwork with cleaning up the water from the rainstorm that occurred on August 8th. A special thanks is extended to Claire Burka’s husband who brought a large wet vacuum!

Ed & Mary Maksuta celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on a weekend in early August. What a great marital mile stone! Over 60 guests participated in the celebration that was held in the recreation area in Stensrud Lodge. Thanks to the recreation department, especially Jessie for going above and beyond in helping plan and prepare for their big day. Ed and Mary are very thankful to be able to live so close to each to other. Mary lives in Stensrud Lodge and Ed lives in Eamer Court.

40th Anniversary! On Tuesday July 25th, 2017 a celebration in honor of the 40th anniversary of Stensrud Lodge was held. Musical entertainment was provided by ‘Saskatchewan Sol’ while everyone enjoyed burgers, hotdogs, popcorn and cotton candy. Words of kindness were delivered by: Trish Chevedayoff, JR Communications Consultant; Mike Stensrud, Miners Construction; Kevin Waugh, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon; Lisa Lambert, MLA; Bev Dubois, MLA; Karen Knelsen, JR Board Chair; and Blanch Kolojay, Stensrud Lodge resident. A time capsule, to be opened in 25 years, was assembled. Staff, residents and family members had collected items such as an unrolled ‘Roll up the Rim’ cup from Tim Horton’s; a commemorative cup from the Saskatchewan Rough Riders; drawings from residents; pictures of residents and staff; a new $10 bill; a July calendar; a menu, a Jubilee Residences newsletter and of course, some Canada 150 pins. The time capsule was placed into the ground and covered with a plaque that was generously and anonymously donated. Beside the plaque, a “Hope for Humanity” rosebush was planted in honor of the event. A cake cutting ceremony was held and everyone enjoyed cake and activities such as caricature drawing; a henna artist; fish pond; photo booth; face painting and a display from the Diefenbaker Centre – ‘Sisters United: Women’s Suffrage in Saskatchewan’. Thank you to everyone attended the event. In 25 years the time capsule will be opened in celebration of the 65th anniversary of Stensrud Lodge!

All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten Most of what I really need To know about how to live And what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top Of the graduate school mountain, But there in the sand pile at Sunday school. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - Learn some and think some And draw and paint and sing and dance And play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, Watch out for traffic, Hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder.

Bullying in the Workplace

What is workplace bullying? Bullying is usually seen as acts or verbal comments that could ‘mentally’ hurt or isolate a person in the workplace. Sometimes, bullying can involve negative physical contact as well. Bullying usually involves re-peated incidents or a pattern of behavior that is in-tended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggres-sion. How Can Bullying Affect an Individual? People who are the targets of bullying may experience a range of effects. These reactions include: • Shock • Anger • Feelings of frustration and/or helplessness • Increased sense of vulnerability • Loss of confidence • Physical symptoms such as inability to sleep, loss

of appetite • Psychosomatic symptoms such as stomach pains,

headaches • Panic or anxiety, especially about going to work • Family tension and stress • Inability to concentrate, and • Low morale and productivity.

The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us to

become the-best-version-of-ourselves or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves. We

become like our friends. No man becomes great on his own. No woman becomes great on her own.

The people around them help to make them great. We all need people in our lives who raise our

standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the-best–version-of- our-

selves.

Congratulations Black Belts! We are proud of all your years of dedication and training! Hats off to Kelly and Crystal Greenwood!!! Both of them have been in martial arts competition lately! COMMUNICATION TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS—Tips for Communicating with a Person with Dementia In the July/August newsletter we talked about Memory Loss and Confusion. Please recall that situations involving memory loss and confusion are extremely difficult for caregivers and families, and require much patience and understanding. Stay calm. Although being called by a different name or not being recognized can be painful, try not to make your hurt apparent. Respond with a brief explanation. Don't overwhelm the person with lengthy statements or reasons. Instead, clarify with a simple explanation. Show photos and other reminders. Use photographs and other thought-provoking items to remind the person of important relationships and places. Travel with the person to where he or she is in time. If the person's memory is focused on a particular time in his or her life, engage in conversation about recollections with an understanding that this is his or her current reality. Offer corrections as suggestions. Avoid explanations that sound like scolding. Try: "I thought it was a fork" or "I think she is your granddaughter Julie." Try not to take it personally. Alzheimer's disease causes your loved one to forget, but your support and understanding will continue to be appreciated.

Coffee, Tea & 2 goodies with Marion: Eamer lounge on Monday, Wednesdays & Fridays; 8:00 to 10:00 am. Cost $3.00. Bring a cup! Everyone is welcome!

Eamer Court—Cosmo Court—Mount Royal Court Tips for Fire Safety: The majority of fires happen in the kitchen --Be Careful when Cooking • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking anything. If you must leave the kitchen, even for a

moment, turn the stove or burner off. • Check your food regularly. • Never wear loose fitting clothes while cooking. • Keep anything that can catch fire- oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, etc away from

your stovetop. Do not use your stovetop as a countertop for storage when you are not cooking. The element can accidently get turned on and cause a fire.

• Fight small cooking fires by sliding a lid over the pan and turning the stovetop off. • If the fire does not go out, leave your suite or cottage and call 9-1-1 immediately. • REMEMBER THE FIRE DEPT WILL NOT COME UNLESS YOU CALL 9-1-1.

Do not assume that someone else has called. The fire dept would rather get 10 calls than no calls if there is a fire.

Simple Formula for Living

Live beneath your means. Return everything you borrow. Stop blaming other people.

Admit it when you make a mistake. Give clothes not worn to charity.

Do something nice and try not to get caught. Listen more; talk less.

Every day take a 30 minute walk. Strive for excellence, not perfection. Be on time.

Don’t make excuses. Don’t argue. Get organized. Be kind to unkind people.

Let someone cut ahead of you in line. Take time to be alone. Cultivate good manners.

Be humble. Realize and accept that life isn’t fair. Know when to keep your mouth shut.

Go an entire day without criticizing anyone. Learn from the past. Plan for the future.

Live in the present. Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s all small stuff!
