Tiger Tracks *Jackson State will dedicate the 2012 season to former Tiger Vincent Jones, who passed away following along battle against cancer. Jones was diagnosed with cancer shortly after reporting to campus during his freshman year (during the 2011-12 academic year). *JSU has a 42-37-6 record in season openers. The Tigers are 3-3 in season openers during the Comegy era, including victories in each of the last two sea-sons - over Delta State (9/24/10) by a score of 32-17 and Concordia College (Ala.) (9/3/11) by a score of 42-2. *Jackson State is 0-8 against non-NCAA FCS conferences. *Jackson State returns seven offensive and eight defensive starters this season. *Joseph LeBeau was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. *Rico Richardson, EJ Drewery, Zion Pyatt, LeBeau, Todd Wilcher and Qua Cox were all named All-SWAC first team members, while Stephen Capler, Johnathan Billups and BJ Lee were named second team members. *Jackson State was predicted to finish second in the SWAC Eastern Division in the league preseason poll. *Jackson State finished the 2011 season by winning six of its final seven games. In the final two games of the season the Tigers scored 85 points while allowing only 13 points. *Joseph LeBeau, who is JSU’s best defender, made the most of his summer. LeBeau took 18 hours in the second session of summer school, in addition to taking classes during intercession and the first session of summer school, in order to graduate in December. He also has a 3.5 grade point average. *BJ Lee, who is ranked as one of the fastest men to run track and play football, won a SWAC championship in the Indoor 60 meter dash last season. *Jackson State boasts some of the fastest skill position players in the Southwest-ern Athletic Conference. Rico Richardson, BJ Lee and Tobias Singleton all have elite football speed. Richardson established himself as one of the legitimate deep threats in the SWAC, while BJ Lee proved to be one of the quickest, most elu-sive players in the SWAC. Singleton was a stellar kick returner in the SEC last season as a freshman. History in the Making *The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Jackson State Tigers made history in 2009, by becoming the first SEC school and SWAC school, both from the state of Mississippi, to meet on the gridiron.

LAST MEETING JSU 7, Mississippi State 45 Sept. 5, 2009 * Starkville, MS STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Jackson State Tigers were looking to make history by be-ing the first Southwestern Athletic Conference team when they took the field against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday afternoon. Unfortu-nately the Tigers were on the wrong end of a 45-7 loss.

After a 30 minute delay due to lightning strikes around the stadium, the Tigers and the Bulldogs met for the first time ever on the gridiron. Turnovers and penalties hampered the Jackson State offense. Mississippi State was also plagued by turnovers and pen-alties, JSU had 15 penalties and MSU committed 12, however the Bulldogs were able to overcome those hiccups.

Both teams opening drives stalled out. JSU got the ball for the first time in the game when Kerry Hoskins recovered a Christian Ducre fumble. JSU was not able to move the ball and attempted to punt. MSU capitalized on a botched JSU punt attempt and took over possession on the JSU 24 yard line. Four plays later the Bulldogs put up the first points on the scoreboard, when Chris Relf connected with Chad Bumphis for a 15 yard TD. Brauchle's extra point kick gave MSU a 7-0 lead with 9:12 remaining in the first quarter.

MSU took over possession on the JSU 22 yard line on another mishandled JSU punt attempt. Marcell Young broke up a Tyson Lee pass in the end zone to save a touch-down. Sean Brauchle missed a 38-yard field goal attempt.

On MSU's next possession Brauchle missed a 37-yard field goal attempt at the 12:19 mark in the second quarter. The Bulldogs ended the half with a 12 play, 79 yard drive to give MSU a 14-0 lead.

MSU opened the second half with a three play, 15 yard drive that ended with a seven yard run scoring run by Robert Elliot at the 13:07 mark in the third. Brauchle's point after kick made the score 21-0. Six minutes and 58 seconds later Marcus Green hauled in a 19-yard pass from Relf. Brauchle's kick made the score 28-0. MSU ended the quarter with a seven-yard Relf to Bumphis TD pass. The extra point kick gave MSU a 35-0 lead. Brauchle opened the fourth quarter with a 25 yard field goal. JSU got its only score of the game when freshman Terrance Davis capped a 10 play, 72-yard drive with a 16 yard TD run.Eric Perri's extra point kick made the score 38-7 with 8:27 remaining in the game. MSU recorded the final score of the game when Corey Broomfield inter-cepted an errant pass by Trae Rutland and returned it 43 yards for the score.

JSU finished the game with 194 total offensive yards, while MSU had 359. The Tigers had 62 rushing yards and 132 passing. The Bulldogs had 202 rushing yards and 157 passing yards. Rutland finished with a team high 62 rushing yards and a game high 132 passing yards. Relf led the Bulldogs with 82 rushing yards and a TD to go along with 75 passing yards. Keenan Tillman caught two passes for a game high 57 yards for JSU. Marcus Green caught three passes for 40 yards and a TD.

Malcolm Palmer led JSU with 8.5 tackles and Marcus Jamison followed with six. Wade Bonner led MSU with four tackles. The attendance of 54,232 is the third largest in MSU history.

Tigers Among National Leaders in Attendance The Jackson State Tigers finished the 2011 season ranked in the top five in attendance. The Tigers averaged 23,166 fans per game for fifth best at the FCS level. ROSTER LOADED WITH QBs The JSU 2012 roster has seven signal callers listed on it. The current batch of QBs is the deepest pool for the Tigers during the Comegy era. POSITION CHANGES A couple of Tigers will play different positions this season. Senior EJ Drewery will see time at both WR and TE. Last season Drewery played WR only. Sophomore Ariane McCree will play LB and DE. Last season he saw time at LB. TIGERS ROSTER MADE UP OF HOSPITALITY STATERS 34 members of the JSU football team are from the great state of Mississippi. Of those 34, 16 are from Jackson and surrounding areas. TRANSFER U! Not only has the JSU coaching staff done a good job of recruiting freshmen and JUCO transfers, the Tigers also has eight players from Division I programs to transfer to J-State. To-bias Singleton - ATH (Ole Miss), EJ Drewery - TE/WR (SMU), BJ Lee - ATH (SMU), Clayton Moore - QB (Akron), Evan Ingram - QB (Ole Miss), Marquese Dunn - RB (New Mexico St.), Caleb Lester - DB (UAB) and Raphael Dent - DB (Southern Miss). DEPARTED PLAYERS Gone from the JSU program, for the 2012 sea-son, are several highly skilled players. QB Ca-sey Therriault - set or tied JSU records in pass completions, pass attempts, passing yards and passing touchdowns. WR Marcellos Wilder - led the team in receptions and was second in touchdown receptions last season. TE Renty Rollins - was second on the team in receptions and third in touchdown receptions. DE Donavan Robinson - tied JSU’s single season sack re-cord last season with 16. CHISLED PHYSIQUE Several players have worked on their physical fitness over the summer. Joseph LeBeau added muscle and strength during the off-season, in order to deal with expected double-teams he will face during SWAC play. Rico Richardson added 10 pounds of muscle in order to have more productivity as the No. 1 receiver, as well as to participate in the return game. BJ Lee, is pound-for-pound one of the strongest and most physically fit members of the team.

Rick Comegy JSU Head Football Coach * Seventh Year For more than 30 years, Rick Comegy has crafted a career filled with successful student-athletes and championship-

winning teams. Last season the Tigers celebrated the 100th season of football with a 9-2 record and a SWAC Eastern Divi-

sion co-championship. During the 2007 season, his second year at Jackson State, he added a Southwestern Athletic Confer-

ence championship to his prolific resume'.

Now in his seventh season, Comegy continues to build on his stellar reputation while leading JSU to prominence in the

SWAC. In six seasons he has produced five winning seasons. Under Comegy's leadership the Tigers have produced 33 All-

SWAC selections, the HBCU Offensive and SWAC Player of the Year (Casey Therriault), the SWAC Defensive Player of the

Year, AFCA All-American (Marcellus Speaks-2008), SBN All-Americans Therriault and Renty Rollins (2010) SWAC Champi-

onship Game Offensive Player of the Game (Jimmy Oliver-2007) and Defensive Player of the Game (Domonique Johnson-

2007). Wide receiver Jaymar Johnson was drafted by Minnesota in the sixth round of the 2008 draft and Domonique John-

son and Marcus Benard signed NFL contracts (with Denver and Cleveland respectively) in 2009. Donavan Robinson was

picked up as a rookie free agent with the New York Giants.

In 2010 the Tigers bounced back from its first losing season under Comegy, to finish the season with an 8-3 record. In

2006, his inaugural season, he opened with a 44-20 victory over Paul Quinn and went on to post a 6-4 overall record. In

2007, he led the Tigers to a SWAC Eastern Division title and the schools 16th conference championship with a 42-31 victory

over Grambling State. He was named the SWAC Coach of the Year, Coach of the Year by the Pig Skin Club of Washington,

D.C., and Coach of the Year by the 100% Wrong Club. City of Jackson councilman Kenneth I. Stokes named him "Man of

the Year" at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner. In 2008 his Tigers finished with a 7-5 overall record (6-2 SWAC), as

the Tigers won their second consecutive SWAC Eastern Division title. In 2009 JSU posted its first losing season under

Comegy, posting a 3-7 record.

Comegy came to JSU after serving as head football coach for the Tuskegee University Golden Lions, where he compiled

a 90-26 overall record in a ten-year span. He captured four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship titles

(1998-2001, and 2004) and three-of-five bowl games from 1998 to 2004. In 2001, the Golden Tigers led the SIAC in both

scoring offensively and defensively. In 2000, he finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record and went on to win the Na-

tional Black College Football Championship.

Comegy's coaching career began as a defensive back coach at Millersville University in 1975. After a three-year stint with

Millersville as the defensive and receiver coach, he joined the coaching staff at Colgate University as the defensive coach

and assistant track coach.

In his seven years at Colgate, he would hold the title as head baseball coach for four years as well as the defensive

coach and quarterback and receiver coach. After serving as defensive line/coordinator at Central State University from 1985-

1993 he left for the head coaching position at Cheyney State. After two years, he returned to Central State as head coach

and led the team to consecutive NAIA appearances and one championship in 1995. In two years as head coach, he posted

an 18-3 overall record. During his career, Comegy has helped send many athletes to the National and Canadian Football

leagues. Some of his athletes are: Eric Williams, Jacon Shelly and Teka Brown of the Dallas Cowboys; Hugh Douglas of the

New York Jets (1995 Rookie of the Year); Vince Buck of the New Orleans Saints; Marvin Pope of the San Francisco 49ers;

Milton Jones of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Kervin Wardroup of the Detroit Lions; Marvin Coleman of the Washington

Redskins; Russell Meeks of the Calgary Stampeders; Jim Williams of the Chicago Bears; Drayton Florence of the San Diego

Chargers; Frank Walker of the New York Giants; Kelvin Powell of the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos; Roosevelt Williams of the

Chicago Bears; Bennitte Waddell of the Minnesota Vikings; Anthony Mitchell of the 2001 Super Bowl Championship Balti-

more Ravens. In 2008, Jackson State's Jaymar Johnson was drafted in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings and

Lavarus Giles signed with as a free agent running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Pennsylvania native is a 1976 graduate of Millersville University of Lancaster, Pa., where he was a three-year letter-

man and an all-conference defensive back. With the opportunity to play for the Philadelphia Bells of the WFL, he left school

for a year but returned in 1975 as a part-time student and coach, and earned a BS degree in sociology.

While coaching may take an ample amount of coach Comegy's time, he and his staff hold several youth football camps

during the summer gearing each camp to teach participants the basic fundamentals of football in an energetic and positive

atmosphere. Comegy is also a board member or Make A Wish Foundation in Jackson, Miss.

Comegy is affiliated with the Catholic Church and is a member of the American Football Coaches Association. The

Comegy family suffered a great loss on June 22, 2009 when his wife of 25 years, Connie lost her battle against cancer.

Connie was 54 years old when she passed away. Coach Comegy and Connie are the parents of two girls and three boys:

Mary, Connie, William, Rick and Billy Joe and have 12 grandchildren and three great-grand children.
