    PoliticalcampaignsintheUnitedStateshaveaninterestinghistory.Atfirst,thecandidatesforpresidentweredecidedbycaucusesoftheparties’congressionaldelegates.Thisdidn’tworktoowellbecausethereweremanyabusesbypartyleaders.Theprimaryelectionstriedtoeliminatetheproblemsofcorruption.

    Intheprimaryelections,eachpartyestablishesitsownrulesineachstate.Inthebeginning,eachparty—RepublicanandDemocratic—gaveeachstatetwovotesbasedonthenumberofelectorstheyhadintheElectoralCollege.(ThenumberofmembersoftheElectoralCollegehaschangedovertimeasnewstateswereaddedtotheUnitedStates.Currently,thereare538votes.)Thenumberofdelegatesforbothpartieshaschangedconsiderablyovertheyears.Inthe2016elections,theRepublicanPartyhad2,472delegates,andtheDemocratshad1,151.Itcanbecomplicatedbecauseeachpartymakesitsownrulesabouthowmanydelegateseachstatewillhave.Somestatesgiveallofthedelegatestothewinner,butotherstatesawardthedelegateproportionally.
