sharing of information, creating an economy that represents a value of its citizens’ experiences

by early interactions in the primitive years of farming include the creation of language, a driver of society.

During the last century, advances

urban fabric of many cities in the Rocky Mountain region, creating ‘rings’ of new development, moving ‘spark’ developments away from city cores and into adjacent suburbs. Today, new urbanism seeks to reimplemented a revival of our lost art of place-making, and promotes the creation and restoration of compact, walkable, mixed-use

opportunities for developments, businesses and members of the community alike.

Situated in a strong grid of industrial and residential blocks, Salt Lake City has begun to grow and change, moving further away from a car driven template of evolution, towards a more urban-centric model. Communities like Granary district have fallen into ‘degeneration’, resulting from a move away from industrial dominated zoning, and cut off from strong residential communities to the west via I80, which taxi’s 207,000 cars a-day, through the salt lake valley and past the city core.

The spark utilizes knowledge sharing principals: people, place, and technology, incubating new opportunities in the authentic infrastructure of Granary District. Spark strengthens connections through adjacent districts, open space environments and the Salt Lake City core, repairing a broken fabric resulting from a car driven model.

3:Characterizing Degeneration: This is the project site in its current state, an iconic area in the Granary District.

4:The Good, the bad, and the underutilized: Utilizing existing characteristics of the Granary district, and analyzing new opportunities associated with the Spark.

5:Urban Spaces Analysis: New connections spread outward, and are followed by new developments that stem from the spark program. Economic, Housing, Transportation, Urban and Open Space investments are stimulated by the original spark.

PRESERVING AUTHENTICITY

SEASONAL PROGRAMING

HUMAN SCALE INTERFACE

9:Architectural Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings: A cement factory is converted into a safe haven for big market conventions, local business entrepreneurship, and very visible active recreation catalyst.10:Affordable Housing And Transformed Streetscapes: A streetscape of 60 feet is shrunk by half, adding generous pedestrian walkways, town-home setbacks and in an effort for sustainable change in the district, curb side retention is introduced.11Active Community: Like a sports stadium, the open space beneath the silo icon is easily transformed from ice rink to concert venue to grassy open space for outdoor theater nights. An interface with the open market creates a symbiosis between public open space and economic prosperity.

12the SLC street car and existing spark infrastructure. Bioremediation here will create a thriving park atmosphere, where ‘all eyes look towards the silos’ and the community can gather under some of Salt Lake Cities currently underutilized Olympic artifacts.13spark opportunity, and stimulate new growth along as of now underutilized roadways and trails networks. This is key to anchoring the programs for new investment and successful district regeneration.
