JSB Science Fair
In celebration of Education Week this
year, the Gr.7 and 8 students showcased
their inquiry skills in an amazing science
fair on May 2nd. They displayed over 40
projects in the gym. The topics varied
from evolution to placebo effects. The
fair generated much interest among the
younger students who interviewed the
exhibitors. They are now eagerly looking
forward in trying their hands on doing
science fair at their level next year.
A big thank you to Ms. Yu and her team
for organizing the successful fair, and to
parents for their support. Well done,
Gr.7 and 8 students. You set a high bar
and modelled well for the younger
students.
EQAO Postponed
Given the ongoing job action (work-to-
rule) by elementary teachers across the
province, the Education Quality and
Assessment Office (EQAO) will not be
sending out assessment materials.
As a result, EQAO testing for Grade 3
and Grade 6 students will be postponed
until further notice.
We will provide an update to parents
/guardians should more information
become available.
Track and Field Qualifiers
The JSB Track and Field Team achieved
outstanding results at the West
Conference Qualifier on May 14th at
Centennial Park. We sent over 100
student athletes to participate. Out of
the 78 grades 4 to 8 students who
participated and are able to move on to
the Conference Finals (our grades 2 and 3
students only participated in the one
meet), 62 are moving on to the Finals.
Congratulations to all of our athletes and
a big thank you to the coaches for all of
your work and dedication and to our
parent drivers!!!
Soccer Success
The Senior Girls Soccer
Team won both their
games on May 15th to qualify for the
West Quarter Final. Well done, and
thank you, Coach Ms. Baron.
Congratulations to the Senior Boys
Soccer Team for their tournament at
John English on May 20th. The boys
went undefeated and conducted
themselves with great sportsmanship on
the pitch. Solid defence and crisp
movement led JSB to victory. Thank you,
Coach Mr. Kobe and Coach Mr. Blaziak!
Frisbee Fun
Spring time is frisbee
time. The Junior
Ultimate Frisbee Team had a great time
throwing and catching at a tourney at
Smithfield MS. Special shout out to
captain Sarah M. Coach Mr. McShane felt
super proud to lead the awesome team.
TDSB Spring Concert
On May 7th five JSB students performed
at the TDSB Spring Concert Festival at
Massey Hall. Congratulations to Ethan P.,
Beth, Bronwyn, Zenon and Kyunha. Their
practice and dedication led them to be
selected from many student musicians
throughout the city to rehearse, perform
and represent JSB in the citywide band,
strings or orchestra.
JSB Spring Concert On May 20th, the middle school
instrumental music students held their
annual spring concert. They offered their
families, friends and community members
an memorable evening of lovely music. The
highlight was the drumming performance
created by students themselves. Congrats
to all, and a special thank you to Mr.
Jansen and Ms. Kundakcioglu.
Print Making Art
Ms. Leis's Grade 2/3 and Ms. Chard's
Grade 3 visited the AGO. They started
with a tour of the gallery. The students
looked at various pieces that used found
materials in interesting ways to create
works of art. After the tour the students
selected various textured paper and
corrugated cardboard materials to create
their own unique print template. They
inked their templates and created
wonderful figurative or abstract prints
that now hang in JSB.
Rolled Magazine Collages
Ms. Spence's Gr.7 and Gr.8 students
created rolled magazine collages. They
rolled magazine strips with a wooden
skewer, then used the rolled strips to
cover a design. The effect was stunning.
Samples are on display in front of the
office.
Pink Tulip for Diversity
The theme for the 2015 Mimico Tulip
Festival was International Day of Pink. A
group of talented Gr.8 students (Beatrice,
Cam, Isa, Kyunha, Sahara, Yaila), with Ms.
Spence's guidance, created an elegant
pink tulip lined on the edge with
individually designed figures to symbolize
friendship and diversity. Even the JSB
Tiger was drawn free hand. Impressive!
In case you missed the display on Royal
York Road, here are the images.
Mental Health Awareness
Each year, Ontarians mark the first full
week of May as Children's Mental Health
Week. This year our Child Youth Workers,
Ms. Pacheco and Ms. Monlouis, organized a
"wear green" day on May 6th and a month-
long green ribbon bulletin board to
promote acceptance of individual
differences and to encourage students to
talk about their feelings. Thank you, Ms. P
and Ms. M, for spreading awareness of this
important cause.
Salmon Release and
BelFountain Trip
It was a beautiful day in Caledon when
class 6A and 6B went to Humber River to
release the 88 salmon that Mr. McShane’s
Fishing Club had raised. Each student
released 2 salmon. After that, we were
on our way to the Belfountain
Conservation Area to fish and go hiking.
But what we discovered was much more
than just that.
When we arrived, we ate our lunches, then
we went to explore and little did we
know… what we found was a long
suspension bridge! We were wondering
where it would lead to, so we walked
across it. The dam below was really loud.
On the other end we discovered
something mind-blowing - a nice, cold cave.
The cave looked like a jail in the dungeon
from medieval times. The top of the cave
led to two trails.
The first trail we did was the Pond Loop.
We saw clay, dragonflies and mini streams
while we walked around the pond. The
second trail we did was the Gorge
Loop which looked like a Hobbit scene. We
did tree rubbings, then we headed back to
go fishing. Alison was very close to
catching a fish but it left her line. Some
of us put our feet in the water and just
enjoyed nature.
We had a great time at Belfountain and
would go again if we could.

journal entries, May 26th)
Shrub Planting
On May 27th, Ms. Mok's Gr.4/5/6 class
had an exciting day learning about the
importance of planting trees to help
conserve portion of a wetland, the
resurfaced Jackson Creek at 29th St.
The Gr.4/5 students wrote: Today we went
to Laburham Park on 29th St. north of
Lakeshore. We planted bushes called
shrubs. There were helpers from the
Toronto Region Conservation Area to show
us how to do it. We were in 3 groups of 5.
We used shovels to dig out the dirt, and a
mallet to hammer down the staples on a
fibre mat that covers the plant base. We
planted 50 shrubs all together. It was
hard work! Justin said, "I liked planting
the saplings so they can survive just like
us!” We'd like to go back next year to
see "our trees".
Character Trait for June:
Perseverance
During the month of June students will be
learning what it means to persevere.
Perseverance can be defined as
steadfastness in seeking a goal.
Some important actions that help
students to persevere are:
Setting realistic goals
Creating a plan to meet our goals
Solving problems when difficulties
arise
Surrounding ourselves with people
who encourage and support us
Committing to continue to strive
toward a goal and not give up
Since perseverance is an important
character trait both at school and home,
we ask that you discuss with your child
their goals. Talk about how he/she can
persevere and eventually achieve their
goals. Recognize and praise his/her
efforts when they work toward or meet a
goal. Help him/her to recognize that
meeting challenges is a normal part of
working toward a goal. Finally, share
stories about how it felt to meet your own
goals through perseverance.
