    The balcony is an element with real selling power to developers

    and architects due to its potential to increase square footage to

    existing buildings. Balconies, if designed properly, simultaneously

    serve as an effective solar shading system and mitigate the effects

    of solar gain within the building. They also can diffuse the wind

    tunnels that so often build up around city buildings, returning the

    street to pedestrians who have previously avoided it due toexcessive winds.

    The qualitative effect of a series of balconies that undulates

    (in plan) are not as straightforward to calculate, but the unique,

    oblique views that the balconies afford up and down the building

    provide a new perspective for building inhabitants to enjoy.

    Additionally, they invoke the haptic sense of the outside observer

    in terms of the building facades almost malleable rhythm.
