This is a class for absolute beginners. We will start off learning about materials and how knitters talk about and describe yarn and needles. We’ll learn to speak the language of knitting patterns, and then dive into how to make stitches using needles and yarn. The group setting ensures that some classic errors that all beginners face will come up and we’ll all learn together how to avoid them or fix them when they happen.

We’ll start off with a simple pattern for a special handmade cotton washcloth. Different people learn and knit at different speeds, so for many of us, this project will take the whole class. Others may

finish the washcloth, and we’ll start knitting a gauzy spring or summer scarf. When you are through with this class, you will be able to read a pattern, pick out yarn, cast on a project and finish it all by yourself! And if you get into trouble, you’ll have a new knitting community at J.P. Knit and Stitch to help you out!

This is a class for kids who want to learn how to knit, or who already know how and want to knit in the company of other knitters after school. We’ll have a handful of simple patterns that won’t take too long to finish, and a lot of fun! We’ll look carefully at what yarn and knit fabric are like so that we can “read” our knitting. Then we’ll pick from the collection of simple patterns we’ll have available, and knit away! Each week, pictures and words from the class will be collected so that we’ll each have a book at the end, to remind us of what we’ve learned, our new friends, and all the fun we had.

This course teaches the fundamentals of crochet and is appropriate for beginners or experienced crocheters who want to hone their skills, learn proper techniques, or practice following patterns. Students will learn basic crochet stitches and skills, which will first be applied to make flat pieces—a dish towel or a scarf. Building from here, students will learn how to crochet in the round to make hats and/or granny squares. After this we will spend time learning to read patterns and make individually selected projects. We’ll wrap up the course by learning finishing and seaming techniques and how to trouble-shoot mistakes.

Week 1: Learn basic stitches and vocabulary of crochet—chain, single crochet, double crochet, half-double crochet. Begin dishrag or scarf.
