Gaining Momentum
Most of the cars I’ve owned over my lifetime had a difficult time
gaining momentum. I think especially about the 1985 Chevy
Cavalier that I drove in the late 90’s. Not known for its power, its
style, its speed or its comfort, the car was primarily designed to get
you from point A to point B – and that’s it. Getting on the “on ramp”
of a freeway was especially challenging. It went from 0 to 60mph in
about 6.7 minutes!
For a church to gain momentum can also be just as challenging.
We’re not known for moving quickly. But I have to say I’ve been
thrilled about the momentum we have gained since starting our 2nd
Traditional Service. The excitement in the church with new people
coming in our doors each week is awesome. The thrill of starting
new groups and seeing people grow in grace is wonderful. I hope
you feel the excitement as well.
For those of you who are number’s people, like me, the following
stats gives us more insight in the momentum we’ve had as far as
attendance is concerned.
I hope you will continue to pray for our momentum. God has truly
blessed us. Don’t forget to invite your friends and neighbors as we
seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday!
In Christ,
Rick Enns [email protected]

Faith, Grief, & Coping: Equipping Your Toolbox with the Right Tools
Sunday, October 1
4:00 pm, Sanctuary
Nursery Provided
We all have seasons in life that we experience. Seasons of pure joy, pure greatness, just okay, getting along, deep darkness, deep confusion, sad-ness, and grief find their way into our paths. Many times we experience these things in combinations. We sail through the happy seasons without a care in the world and we crumble when crisis and tragedy hit. We don’t always know how to act, what to do, what to think, what to say, and most importantly don’t feel equipped to lead our kids through these times with
us.
In light of the unexpected death of a beloved principal and the uncertainty of others in the midst of medical issues within our community, we will gather with licensed counselors and special guests to help us un-derstand grief and how best to help ourselves, each other, and especially
our children.

I invite you all to walk
through the children’s area
and look in our kids. They
have been having a
wonderful time on
Wednesdays and Sundays.
Thanks to everyone who
donated stuffed animals and
donated to help with
shipping costs. I am happy to announce that our kids
hugged and prayed over 160 stuffed animals. We were
able to share these with 3 churches who are ministering
and lending assistance to families affected by Hurricane
Harvey. What a blessing!!!!!
Last week, we had a very special guest, Rannah Evetts,
join the kids for Wednesday night. Rannah is the founder
and director of the St. Francis De Sales School for the
Deaf in Uganda. Over the past 5 months, you and the
kids have donated over $500 to Rannah to help her
provide water and safe school environment while she
continues to follow the God’s call on her to give
Ugandan children a language. We had so much fun and
learned so much about her life in Uganda. The night
closed with hands outstretched towards Rannah and the
sweetest, most sincere prayers were prayed not only for
her but for the safety of her students and bright futures
for all. God speaks so loudly through our children!!!
Again, WHAT A BLESSING!
Tonight our children will share in another experience
where called pulled on the heartstrings of a young one to
travel and help children. Carly Behrens will be sharing
her experience she had visiting New Life Children’s
Home in Guatemala this past summer.

Youth News—Charlie Keys, Youth Minister—Successful Launch of Youth Small Groups
A church must grow larger and smaller at the same
time. Larger through worship and smaller through small
groups. Rick Warren
Hello Church Family,
I absolutely believe that one of the most impactful
environments for someone to be influenced by God is
in small groups. Small groups provide an opportunity
for people to be loved and encouraged while being
open and vulnerable able their questions and struggles.
Small groups also create an environment for individuals
to develop as leaders. Individuals have the opportunity
to pray for one another, offer encouragement, discuss
and answer biblical questions, and work to understand
how to live out biblical teaching. Small groups are in my
opinion an extremely important and valuable ministry
resource. That is why I am so excited to announce that
we have successfully launch four youth small groups
on Sunday nights. Each Sunday from 6:00-7:30 we will
offer a small group for junior high guys, junior high girls,
high school guys, and high school girls. These small
groups will enjoy a light supper from 6:00-6:30 and
then will divide to meet with their small group leaders.
Below are the leaders for each of our groups.
Jessi Mitchell and Kayla Irlbeck – junior high girls
Stephen Williams and Jesse Garcia – junior high guys
Aaron Tudyk – high school guys
Carolyn Castro, Patrice Kelch, and Suzanne Buck –
high school girls
Please be sure and say THANK YOU to these
adult leaders! Our small group ministry would not be
possible without them. Also please pray for our small
group leaders and students as they seek to support
and encourage one another.
Chase the Lion,
Charlie Keys II

Thank y’all so much for the beautiful peace lily
you donated in honor of my dad. Also, thank
you for sending the letters of encouragement
to him throughout the years—that meant a lot!
God bless you!
Glen Miller’s family (Brenda Shepherd’s
brother)
Thank you so very much for providing such a
delicious meal for the cast and crew of ‘Texas’.
It always sends a wonderful message to them
from our Christian community. We always
hope that as we fill their bodies with a meal
that we also may leave a lasting impression on
their hearts. They can certainly see by this
generous example that Christians truly do care
about meeting the needs of others.
In His Love,
Dr. Buddy Young—Director
To All Members of United Methodist
Thank you for the pray support for Jerry and
me. It makes this journey so much easier.
We look forward to being back in church and
with God’s love and healing, we know it will be

had a homeless student start school yesterday
and they helped get her all set up!

Congregation,
Thank you for the wonderful homemade ice
cream social! There were some familiar flavors
and new ones alike. The cookies and sweet
treats that were added just really topped off
the sugar rush! You were so thoughtful to sup-
port and love us through your prayers and
treats to get a new year started. This is a fabu-
lous ministry and I wanted you personally
know how grateful I am for such a kind deed.
Blessing,
Mindy Graham—Teacher at Canyon Interme-
diate
Dear FUMC Parish,
Thank you so much for all you do/have done
for our school, Canyon Intermediate. We are
blessed each year with your prayers, food,
gifts and kindness. You will always be appreci-
ated, and we will always be grateful for all you
do! It makes our hearts happy to feel your
love.

Bette Whitworth—6th grade teacher
FUMC,
Thank you for the red pens and pencils. My
students will put them to good use. Thank you
for blessing my class and our school.
Mrs. Trask—Teacher at Canyon Intermediate
I'm back from Jordan and settling into Waco
and my new job. I wanted to say thank you to
you and FUMC for generously supporting my
trip... we had 196 kids in our school this year
which is a new record! I also led worship at
joint Arabic and English services six times
which was such a privilege and joy. If you
could, please thank the church on my behalf
and give them my love.
Blessing,
Margaret Sutherland

Same Kind of Different
as Me
On October 20th, the movie
“Same Kind of Different as
Me” will premier across the
country. The movie is based
on the book of the same
name that tells the true story
of the impact of a friendship
between an art dealer (Ron
Hall), his wife (Debbie Hall),
and a homeless man (Denver
Moore). Despite vast differences, the unlikely friendship
changes all of them as well as the city in which they live.
In each city where the movie premiers, Ron Hall has
sought to partner with a local organization serving the
homeless. In Amarillo, that organization will be the PARC. the
PARC, the Panhandle Adult Rebuilding Center, offers those
experiencing homelessness an opportunity to engage in a
productive environment during the day. The founders of the
PARC envisioned a place where people could come to find
connections. It's through these connections and accountability
that the PARC’s members begin to regain the confidence
needed to break the cycle of homelessness in which they have
found themselves.
The PARC staff and volunteers provide one-on-one
conversation and collaboration for guided activities, projects,
and classes. These classes and projects start to uncover gifts
and skills that perhaps have been lying dormant for years. As
projects are completed, they begin to realize they are capable
of more and start to set more goals for their lives. Everyone is
encouraged to take the steps needed to move forward, so
hosting an atmosphere where everyone can feel valued and
respected as individuals is key. When someone walks through
the doors at the PARC they are greeted and called by name.
Through the relationships that take place, our members are
validated and start to find themselves again.
First United Methodist Church of Canyon is one of
the sponsoring churches for this event. In the coming weeks,
you will hear more about the event and how you can
participate. Watch for announcements in worship on Sunday
morning and mark October 20th on your calendar!
