Day 4 Tuesday 4 AugustEnjoy a morning at leisure. You may like to visit Bandung’s Jalan Braga, a street which still has fine examples of Dutch Art Deco buildings as well as some of the best bakeries to be found in Indonesia. There are a number of museums in Bandung such as the Geological Museum and the Sri Baduga Museum that are easily accessible. The Geological Museum of Bandung was opened in 1928 and houses fossils, minerals and rocks of Indonesia. The museum provides an excellent overview of the Indonesian geology and is most famous for its exhibit of the skull of the original Java Man. The Sri Baduga Museum has various exhibits including traditional dress of Indonesian ethnic groups, a Dutch colonial collection and an interesting archaeological collection from around West Java.

In the afternoon we will visit Saung Angklung Udjo, a centre of West Javanese arts which is run by a family of musicians. Here we will enjoy a performance of West Javanese arts, including dance, gamelan music, puppetry, angklung music and singing. Day 5 Wednesday 5 AugustToday we spend the day at the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) starting with a talk by a guest lecturer from the university. Our lecturer will give us an overview of education in Indonesia and answer questions on the topic. We will be given a guided tour of UPI including the stately ‘Villa Isola’ building. If you wish you may like to visit a class and see firsthand Indonesian university life. Following morning tea at the university we will watch a lively demonstration of the popular West Javanese martial art Pencak Silat. Pencak Silat became synonymous with the Indonesian struggle for freedom against the Dutch colonial government and was banned by the Dutch in the 1930s. Pencak Silat is practiced throughout Indonesia but has a particularly strong and proud history in West Java.

A late lunch at the beautiful Kampung Daun Restaurant - a restaurant designed in the style of a traditional village and situated next to a stream - finishes off our day of education and culture.

Day 6 Thursday 6 AugustContinuing our theme of learning, today we visit a local Community Health Centre and talk to staff about how they tackle health issues within their community. We will then have lunch at nearby Cihampelas which offers a wide range of restaurants, both traditional and Western (at your own expense). After lunch we will visit a centre run by volunteers from the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, which aims to help the street kids of Bandung and hear a talk from a guest lecturer about social issues in Indonesia.

Breakfast. Overnight Bandung.

Day 7 Friday 7 AugustAfter breakfast we check out of our hotel and travel by coach to the town of Wonosobo in Central Java. From the coach we can observe Indonesian village life as it passes us by. It is thought that the site originally had over four hundred temples. Indeed, the name ‘Dieng’ means abode of the gods.

At the Dieng Plateau we will visit the coloured lake Telaga Warna as well as a volcanic

Day 10 Monday 10 AugustIn the morning we travel by coach to Prambanan, the majestic 9th century Hindu temple complex. This is the largest temple complex in all of Java. The temples of the Prambanan complex were all built between the 8th and 10th centuries and are World Heritage listed. There are eight main temples in the central courtyard which are devoted to the Hindu deities Shiva, Brahma, Visnu and Nandi. Statues of these deities are housed within the main chambers of the temples and are breathtaking in their beauty. The temple dedicated to Shiva is the most ornate of the temples as well as being the largest, standing at forty-seven meters high. All of the temples are decorated with intricate carvings which illustrate the story of the Ramayana epic.

After visiting Prambanan, we will travel to the historic town of Kotagede. Kotagede was once the site of the capital of the Mataram Kingdom of Java. These days, Kotagede is a town of silversmiths who specialise in filigree silverwork. The art of working silver is passed down through the generations of artisans that live in Kotagede. We will visit Kotagede’s mosque which is located in the old quarter of the city. This mosque is unusual as it combines traditional Javanese architecture with Hindu-style features. In addition, there are even statues of the Hindu god Kali in the mosque’s adjoining graveyard.

You may wish to return to Prambanan in the evening to watch the Ramayana Ballet performed in traditional Javanese dance. The Ramayana Ballet is also staged at the Puriwisata (Tourist Palace) in Yogyakarta and includes dinner (this is not included, but can be arranged at the time).

Breakfast. Overnight Yogyakarta.

Day 11 Tuesday 11 AugustToday we visit the majestic, World Heritage listed Borobudur temple. The temple was built around the 9th century during the Syailendra Dynasty as a shrine to Buddha and a place of pilgrimage. It was mysteriously abandoned around the 15th century and was rediscovered by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1814.

Borobudur consists of ten levels arranged in a colossal pyramid formation. The bottom levels of the temple are covered with carved stone images depicting the life of Buddha and the three top levels house stupas containing statues of Buddha. The very top of the temple represents the attainment of nirvana, the Buddhist heaven.

It is thought that the layout of the Borobudur temple represents a three-dimensional walk-through mandala or spiritual teaching tool designed to aid prayer and meditation. The ‘pilgrims’ walk around the entire structure is

approximately four kilometres long. The top of the temple is also accessible by stairs cutting through each level.

In addition to our visit to the famous Borobudur temple, we will visit two lesser-known temples called Mendut and Pawon. Mendut may be much smaller in scale than Borobudur but it houses three magnificent statues of Buddha, each seated Western style with both feet on the ground. Pawon is another small temple dedicated to the Buddhist god of fortune Kuvera and shows dwarf figures pouring riches over the temple.

Breakfast, Dinner. Overnight Yogyakarta.

Day 12 Wednesday 12 AugustA free day for you to explore Yogyakarta. You may re-visit the Beringharjo markets to buy batik, or check out the street stalls of Malioboro road. Try taking a becak (rickshaw) to Kotagede to purchase silver handicrafts. The Gabusan Art Market is also worth a visit for traditional handicrafts and small artistic souveneirs (we will need to check with our tour guide for opening times). The Affandi Museum outside of Yogyakarta houses the impressionist works of Indonesia’s most famous painter, Affandi and is open from 10am – 4pm.

For a longer trip, you might like to visit the black sand beach known as Parangtritis. Parangtritis is the home of the mythological Goddess of the South Sea, Nyai Roro Kidul. It is not safe for swimming. If you go to Parangtritis be sure to stop at the beautiful hotel ‘Queen of the South’ for refreshments and a stunning view of the ocean.

In the evening, you may choose to eat ‘lesehan’ style where one sits on a bamboo mat and eats at a very low table. Lesehan can be found on any street in central Yogyakarta after the sun goes down. It is a great way to soak up the warm Yogyakartan night. If you prefer, pull up a seat at an angkringan (covered stall) for a cup of tea, a local snack and a chat with fellow customers.

Breakfast. Overnight Yogyakarta.

We transfer to our hotel after arriving in Bandung that evening.Breakfast. Overnight Bandung.

Once at the foot of the mountain you can catch a lift up the slope in an open-topped shuttle bus, or walk approximately 2 kilometres to the mountain’s peak. Sulphuric, bubbling craters and views across Band-ung greet us at the top and a bustling market selling home-made souvenirs sits along the edge of one of the volcano’s largest craters.

After our visit to Tangkuban Perahu, we travel to Maribaya park. Maribaya is a well-known local picnic spot. There we enjoy fresh air, rural scenery and a very pretty national park that is dotted with beautiful waterfalls fed by hot springs.
