Days 1-2: Depart U.S. for Hanoi, Vietnam

Day 3: Arrive Hanoi We arrive in theVietnamese capital mid-morning, then transferto our hotel. The remainder of the day is atleisure.

Day 4: Hanoi This morning we take a walk-ing tour of Ba Dinh Square, a popular complexof cultural and historic sites, including the mar-ble and granite mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh,the Presidential Palace, and thousand-year-oldOne Pillar Pagoda. Following lunch on ourown we embark on an orientation tour of thisFrench-accented city. We pass Hoan KiemLake; visit the marvelous Temple of Literature(c. 1070); and tour infamous Hau Lo Prison,also known as the “Hanoi Hilton” during theVietnamWar. Later we walk the AncientQuarter then enjoy a traditional cyclo ride.Tonight we gather at a local restaurant for awelcome dinner and traditional Water Puppetshow. B,D

Day 5: Hanoi/Ha Long Bay Early thismorning we depart on a full-day excursion toHa Long Bay, a breathtaking waterway sprin-kled with 3,000 islands and islets, and surroundedby a fairytale landscape of limestone cliffs, secretgrottoes, and hidden caves. Our tour includes aboat ride and seafood lunch. B,L

Day 6: Hanoi/Da Nang We fly this morningto Da Nang, Vietnam’s third largest city situatedon the south central coast. Upon arrival, we tourthe acclaimed ChamMuseum, which celebrates theCham people’s Hindu legacy with a fine collectionof sculpture and artifacts. We reach our beachfronthotel mid-morning; the remainder of the day is atleisure in this splendid setting. B

Day 7: Da Nang/Hoi An This morningwe visit nearby Hoi An. A UNESCO WorldHeritage site, Hoi An’s Old Town is a charmingcar-free pedestrian zone lined with tailors,shops, and art galleries. This afternoon is atleisure to either remain in Hoi An on your ownor return to our beachside resort for a relaxinginterlude. B,D

Day 8: Da Nang A morning walking tourof a nearby farming settlement reveals the dailylife of a local community up close. Nestledamidst seemingly endless rice paddies, the vil-lage represents the Vietnam of fable and film;where rice paddies occupy every spare patch ofground, water buffaloes plow the fields, and vil-lagers ride to market with produce piled highon their bicycles. Day 9: Da Nang/Hue We depart this morningby coach for the ancient imperial city of Hue,whose palaces, temples, and tombs evoke itspast grandeur as home to emperors and man-darins. We explore the Imperial City, housingthe Forbidden Purple City complex, now aUNESCO World Heritage site. We also visitthe Central Market where locals buy fish,meat, produce, and sundry goods. Tonightwe enjoy a special Hue buffet, accompaniedby a performance of traditional music. B,D

Day 10: Hue This morning we cruise alongHue’s Perfume River to peaceful Thien MuPagoda, a Buddhist monastery that ranks amongthe city’s oldest and most important monuments.Later we visit the palatial Tomb of Ming Mang(c. 1804), with its pavilions and courtyards modeled

after the Ming Tombs of China. This afternoonwe see the tombs of Tu Doc, a gem of royalarchitecture; and Khai Dinh, an elaborate mix ofancient and modern, European and Asian. B,L

Day 11: Hue/Mekong Delta/Can Tho Weboard an early morning flight to Saigon. Uponarrival we transfer to a motorcoach for the three-hour drive south to the Mekong River town of CaiBe. From there we travel by coach and ferry tothe busy river port and provincial capital of CanTho. We dine tonight at our hotel. B,D

Day 12: Can Tho/Mekong Delta We riseearly for today’s journey by boat to the bustlingfloating market at Cai Rang on the Mekong’slower reaches. After lunch together at a localrestaurant, we return to our hotel where theremainder of the afternoon and evening is atleisure. B,L

Day 13: Mekong Delta/Saigon This morn-ing we reach the upper reaches of the storiedMekong. Here we board motorized sampansfor an up-close look at river life as we explorethe maze of tributaries and inlets that lead to tinysettlements and villages populated by fishermenand farmers. After lunch at a local restaurant wecontinue on by coach to Saigon. We reach ourhotel late afternoon; dinner is on our own inthis vibrant city. B,L

Our small group of no more than 28 UCLA alumni andfriends will enjoy many personal encounters and behind-the-scenes looks at life in this inviting land.

We begin in the French-accented capital Hanoi, with a full-day excursion to magical Ha Long Bay withits 3,000 islands and islets. Next fly south to Da Nang and tour the acclaimed Cham Museum, celebratingthe Cham people’s Hindu legacy. In the colorful village Hoi An, cars are prohibited and ancient traditionsstill hold sway. Walk in a rural farming community where rice paddies checker the land, water buffaloplow the fields, and villagers bicycle to market. Then drive to the ancient imperial capital of Hue, oncehome to emperors and mandarins. Cruise the Perfume River to peaceful Thien Mu Pagoda. During twodays spent exploring the vital Mekong River Delta, the river life experience will leave an indelibleimpression. Conclude your journey in spirited Saigon, also called Ho Chi Minh City.
