Thank you for participating in the Huntington Arts
Council's Journey Program. With Journey – students and
teachers will be developing literacy, making connections
and learning to exhibit empathy for others in the world
wide community.
This catalog contains a list of presentations that have been
preapproved for use of JOURNEY funds. Enclosed you
will find brief descriptions and fee structures for these
programs. This information may be subject to change. If you have any questions or would like to book
an artist through the JOURNEY Program, please contact the Arts-in-Education Coordinator at
(631) 271-8423x 14 or at [email protected].
In order to make this directory as user-friendly as possible, the contents herein are listed by culture and
art form. The JOURNEY Program Visiting Artist request Form can be found on the next page to help
teachers, PTA members and school administrators with their requests. Filling out this form prior to
speaking with the Arts-in-Education Coordinator will help you plan your booking and get you the most
accurate cost estimate for your school.

Five vibrant performers celebrate the traditional culture, music, and dances of Guinea. Led by Sidiki
Conde, who lost the use of his legs at age 14. They demonstrate the importance of overcoming any

African Adventure Tales Crabgrass Puppet Theatre

Two funny folktales from Africa come to life with stunning puppetry, spectacular scenery, and infectious
music. In "Koi and the Kola Nuts," the young son of a chief sets out on a wonderful journey in search of
fortune, carrying only a sack of kola nuts. His kindness to the creatures he meets is rewarded when their

Charlotte Blake Alston Storytelling, Residencies and Performance

In our electronic age, Charlotte Blake Alston, accompanied by thumb piano, djembe or 21-string kora,
does what stories have achieved for thousands of years, engage the imagination, underscore human
commonalities and reiterate life lessons. Drawing on sources of stories, songs, games and rhythmic
elements of the African and African American oral traditions, programs are geared to each age group.

Grades K-5 "Fire on the Mountain"- Four person musical production of Ethiopian folk tale.
A classic African folktale is given new life as a spirited four person musical theatre production inspired
by award winning children’s author Jane Kurtz. Journey with Alemayu, a young shepherd boy, through

the vast mountains as he searches for his sister and learns life’s lessons of character, honesty, courage and
love.
“Rosa’s ride” The life of Rosa Parks Follow the struggles of a young girl through the indignities of
prejudice to discover her strength of conviction, as a simple act of civil disobedience gives birth to the
civil rights movement. An intriguing backdrop, which evolves from black and white to an intricate
mosaic, enables us to take “Rosa’s Ride” to a new dawn as four professional actors create a powerful
theatrical musical experience.

“American Heritage Storybook Series: The Golden Global Drum” learning connections thru the arts - including
music, rhythm and dance elements that are traced to ancient Spain, West Africa, Caribbean, and early
American New Orleans. Program explores a variety of cultures and perspectives using selective
biographic, music and dance periods such as, Flamenco, Cha Cha Cha, and Meringue, explore Louis
Armstrong, Dizzy, Tito Puente, NYC, and the Harlem Renaissance.

“American Dance From Africa To Broadway” Explore how American dance evolved from its African roots
and European influences into the popular stage and social dances that we see today. Two versatile
performers take you from classical court dances and the Irish reel, to vaudeville, tap, and even the
cultural impact of Michael Jackson – all of this and more is packed into this highly entertaining and
informative perspective on American history.
“Rhythm Dances From Around The World” Get your passports ready! Visit Mexico, Italy, China, Greece,
Ireland and more in this vibrant exploration of rhythmic folkloric dances from around the globe. Two
skilled professional dancers are your tour guides through these intriguing lands in a production packed
with audience participation.
“Dance, Dance, Dance” Visit five of the seven continents in this fast-paced production which highlights the
cooperation and inter-personal relationships featured in partner dances. From Zaire, Austria and Poland,
to Argentina, Israel, India and the Americas, two multitalented dancers demonstrate and explain the
cross-cultural and social significance of couples dancing.

Palms Down Percussion Music
Grades 3-12 Students will learn the poly-rhythmic side of percussion music, traditions in different nations and
cultures as well as have an opportunity to test their listening/connecting skills in hand claps, claves, call
and response techniques and rudimentary rhythms. Workshops can be held with 1 teaching artist or
several teaching artists/musicians.
Fees: Price will vary depending on distance, number of staff, number of students and type of workshops
provided. Any location more than 50 miles from NYC gas, transportation and lodging Fees will be
added.

Students are taught by professional textile designer in a creative hands-on workshop in color theory and
textile design. The Chinese secret of the silkworm and the cultivation/production of silk fabric will be

Afro Brazil Arts/ African Brazilian Carnival Music and Dance
Grades K-12
An exciting program of Brazilian and African dances, music, and song, featuring capoeira. Incorporates
the speed and agility of martial arts dancing and acrobatics while teaching a philosophy of resolving

Dynamic show of rhythmic, high energy grooves from Brazil and the fife and drum blues traditions of
American Mississippi. Student participation. American and Latin American culture and history in a way
that makes students move to the beat!

Lucienne Perieira Visual Arts
Grades 5-12
In the tradition of socially active muralists from Brazil and South America, Ms. Perieira brings a multi-
day workshop to schools with goal of creating a community mural. Students will have opportunity to
give input to content & design of mural and will be instructed on method of creating mural in large
group setting.
Fees: Schools will decide placement and size of mural and how many students will participate in
workshop program. Fees and time estimates will be based on those parameters. $1,800 - $3,750 *All
MATERIALS will be estimated separately.
Nego Gato Afro-Brazillian Music and Dance Music and Dance
Grades: 2-12 "Living History of African Culture in Brazil"-Performance of Folkloric Music and Dance. Includes live

CARIBBEAN CULTURE
Casplash Interactive Assembly for Steelpan Band Music performance and workshop
Grades k-12
Band director Rudyard Crichlow and the Casplash Steepan Band will lead students through the history
of this instrument of national pride for Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Students will see images of the
instruments start as a recycled waste to handcrafted instrument, participate in a musical number and
learn how to make melodies and why the Steelpan is not a percussion instrument.

Chen and Dancers (H.T.Dance Company) Dance, martial arts, immigration programs

Traditional Arts Workshop (90 min.) Chinese calligraphy and traditional ribbon dance. Choreography

“China Patterns” Performed in full, traditional Chinese costumes, China Patterns introduces students to
Chinese culture through language lessons, historical background, on-stage demonstrations, and audience

“Chinese Acrobat” Our award winning acrobatic artist brings a wide range of acrobatic acts, including
plate spinning, trick cycling, foot juggling and Chinese water bowl manipulations to demonstrate the
physical skill on flexibility and coordination. Acrobatics is a form of art extracted from skills in daily life,
work and martial arts, and are known to have existed as early as the Qin dynasty (221-207BC).
“Chinese Culture Workshops” Learn Chinese culture first-hand through workshops in Chinese dance,
martial arts, calligraphy and ink brush painting, or paper cutting.

Sung-Sook Setton Chinese Calligraphy & Brush Painting
Grades 3-12

Chinese calligraphy and brush painting workshops. Students work closely with this master brush
painter right in classroom or art studio. Artist engages students in discussion of properties of paper, ink,
water and simple philosophy of Chinese painting technique. Students as young as 3rd grade learn to
create in this great tradition and will bring home multiple artworks and understanding of the differences

Dance
Grades K-12
Creative hands-on workshop in tile production, designing, and kiln firing. Students execute designs in
underglaze colors on bisque. All tiles are fired and the finished mural or character signs are suitable for
hanging on school walls. Professional mounting/framing included. Choice of artist designs or murals are

Artistry on Ceramic Tile
Grades K-12 Students will see and learn the art of Hulu, what it is, how to do it, the music and motivation for dancers. Hulu is a
way of life for those who practice it and students will try it in this assembly style program with lots of information
about Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures.

“From the fires: voices of the holocaust” is a play based on extensive research on the
era 1937 to 1945 in Europe. Now in its 19th Anniversary production, THEATRE THREE presents its
acclaimed production, seen by over 100,000 people. It traces one individual girl’s life during this dark era
and focuses on her experiences. Themes of identity, segregation, persecution, depravation of human
rights are explored in dramatic setting through the main character Rachel Hannah Gold. The play is

fiction- -but the times, the place, the experiences chronicled- -unfortunately- -are not. This is a powerful
performance best suited for middle and high schools – audience size can be up to 500 students
Fees: $1,200 for one performance, add $1,200 per for additional performances in same building.
INDIAN CULTURE
Puneeta Mittal Block Ink Printing; Pottery
Grades 3-12
Artist Puneeta Mittal painter and exhibiting ceramic artist will discuss the ancient art of Indian Block
Printing and current trends in modern fashion/textile design and how these trends relate back to patterns
Indian designer have been using for centuries. The hands on workshop will demonstrate simple solutions
to create your own stamp for block printing on fabric. The printing can be a simple single color stamping
or with use of multiple stamps with more complicated multicolor designs. The same technique can be
applied to other mediums such as, paper, clay, leather, metal,etc. Other workshops being offered are:
Bandhani - Tie Dye a scarf, Mehndi - Henna patterns on paper, Rangoli - Painted ceramic tiles, Worli
Paintings - Pencil/pastel linear drawings on brown paper, Madhubani - Color markers on white/beige

Satya Pradeep (Nritya Saagaram Dance Academy) Dance
Grades 1-12
Classical Indian dance, using a universal language of gestures, story telling, mime and footwork.
Stressing the importance of dance as a form of artistic expression and educating children from grades 1-
12 about the similarities and differences between Indian and Western styles of dance. Students get
opportunities to exhibit what they have learned during the interactive session. The Indian dance form
(which is over 2,000 years old) teaches them the importance of discipline, focus, and devotion.

Dr. Rohini B. Ramanathan (The India Heritage Institute) Music, History and Culture of India
Grades K-12

include History, Music, Literature, Fashion, Cuisine and other aspects of Indian Culture. Media used:

Surapsari (Asian Dance & Theatre by Surapsari) Indian Storytelling Dance and Dance-drama
Grades K-12
“Dancing the Universe: Earth & Space Science through Indian Dance” - Explore the earth and space through
the 2000 year old Indian storytelling dance, executed with ever changing facial expressions, hand
gestures called mudra, stylized movements, and poses. The student audience will learn about the solar
system and four spheres of the earth, while being entertained by storytelling dance accompanied with
visually stunning costume and recorded Carnatic music from south India. There will be opportunities for
the audience members to participate in the dance-drama that explores earth and space science subjects,
as well as learning mudra, dance poses, and movements.
“Indus: Stories from Ancient India”- Surapsari presents the world of Hindu myths and Indus civilization
with her lively enactment of storytelling through 2000 year old Bharatanatyam Indian dance. The
students will have opportunities to participate in Indian dance-drama based on a Hindu myth, as well as
learning mudra, dance poses, and movements. This program promotes knowledge in Social studies,

“Stories from India” - This program introduces K-12 students to the arts and culture of India, through
classical Bharatanatyam Indian dance and drama. The students will learn about Indian history, cultural
values that are reflected in the art form, and Carnatic music from south India, while being entertained by
storytelling dance accompanied with costumes. There will be opportunities for the audience members to
take a role in Indian dance-drama, as well as learning mudra (symbolic hand gestures) and poses used in
Bharatanatyam. This program promotes knowledge in Social studies, Theater, Music, Dance, and Visual
arts.

"Balinese Shadow Puppet Theatre" - Enjoy a beloved Indonesian folk tale (K-2) or Hindu epic, Ramayana
(3-5), presented with magical shadow figures & music. Students will learn about how improvisational

sound, background music, props, and certain techniques of maneuvering puppets create dramatic effects.
During a shadow puppet workshop, students will make a shadow puppet with a movable part and try it
out with a screen and light. They will explore the science of light and shadow in a fun atmosphere. This
program promotes knowledge in Science, Mathematics (K-2), Theatre, Music, and Visual Arts.
“Mask Dance & Theatre from Bali (solo or duo performance)”- The students will meet a variety of
masked characters who dance in individually stylized manners with some improvisation. Surapsari will
reveal cultural values and beliefs of Balinese people that are expressed through the masks and storyline
of dance drama. The students will have opportunities to try dance masks and fans, practice unique eye
movement called seledet, and take a role in mask dance-drama. This program promotes knowledge in
Social studies, Theatre, Music, Dance, and Visual arts.

“Shadow puppetry of Indonesia” - Wayang puppet master Tamara Fielding brings her shadow stage set-up
and several ancient and beloved tales to the shadow screen in assembly performances. Students will
learn this ancient technique of story telling, learn about Indonesian society and social norms. She will
also share her experiences as a child and how her interested in this art form turned into a career as a

Egyptian born visual artist combines modern media and materials with traditional art of Arabic

“Multicultural Potter’s Wheel” Take a trip around the work on the potter’s wheel with Cliff Mendelson.
Explore multiple cultures and their interconnectedness through patterns, symbols and imagery through
the forms that they create in clay. It’s like magic to see Cliff recreate 5000 year old large pots right in front
of the audience in this travelling studio. Students see a large display of ceramic exapmples from around
the world during the demonstration, engage in discussions about cultures and join in the making of the
wheel piece created.
“Multicultural mask making program” Ceramic workshop using many ceramic techniques, we will create a
range of faces/expressions that will relate to some aspect of the student reality today or use the past to say
something about an aspect of student’s personal life. Primitive tribes wore mask as part of their ritual,
festival, ceremonies and dances. We will explore the cultural role of the mask. Students will create masks
to express a range of emotions as well as creating their own myth and story behind the mask using clay.

The Thunderbirds demonstrate dances of various Native American nations by dancers in authentic dress.
Accompanied by song, drums and narration to explain origins of dance and details of various cultures.
Students will be introduced to the dancers and their nations and discuss what part of North American
the various nations reside. In this interactive assembly program, students join the dancers onstage for
the Feather Dance.
