JOURNALS CATALOGUE 2020 3

The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose, reflected in its founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.

The Fellowship includes over 60 Nobel Laureates.

Current Fellows and Foreign Members include Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Tim Berners-Lee, Richard Dawkins, Joseph Stiglitz, James Watson and Paul Nurse.

Previous Fellows and Foreign Members include Charles Darwin, Paul Dirac, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Dorothy Hodgkin, Isaac Newton, Ernest Rutherford and Christopher Wren.

About the Royal Society

2020 sees exciting changes to journals from the Royal Society amidst wider developments in European journal publishing as we prepare for the implementation phase of the proposed Plan S.

Biographical Memoirs will be freely available online from January 2020 and three of our journals, Interface, Interface Focus, and Biology Letters move to online only.

This catalogue details subscriptions and package prices for the coming year. Our transparent pricing mechanism continues to ensure value for libraries by avoiding ‘double dipping’ and our open access membership programme enables librarians to support open access publishing at their institution.

Our commitment to cross-disciplinary content and theme issues on important topics makes Royal Society journals essential for major universities around the world. Papers published in Royal Society journals are widely reported in the mainstream press, contributing to the international conversation about science and research.

Thank you for your continued support of our publications.

Founded and governed by scientists, our publishing is led by cutting edge research, whatever its topic or focus. Our inclusive approach allows us to publish research at the forefront of scientific investigation; work that may be the foundation of an entirely new field.

Our rich and varied content includes highly relevant and specific articles of interest to researchers in all disciplines. But in keeping with the mission of the society, our focus is on ground breaking concepts, revolutionary hypotheses and brand new ideas born of cross-disciplinary thinking and discussion between expert, dedicated researchers.

Themed issues guest edited by authorities in a particular field of study bring together leading authors. Open submissions for journals that are broad in scope create a home for cross-disciplinary and new work.

In 2012, we introduced a transparent pricing mechanism that accounts for the impact of Open Access (OA) content and its ‘author / funder pays’ revenue. This ensures that we are not paid both a subscription and an article publication charge (APC) fee for the same article. If the percentage of non-OA articles drops so will the price.

First we estimated cost inflation based upon the current Retail Price Index (RPI) at 3.0 percent.

Then we took account of the recent percentage changein non-OA articles published.

For 2020 prices, we did this by looking at two rolling three year periods, which were 2015 – 2017 and 2016 – 2018. We excluded paid OA articles in our calculations and also any one-off rises in content to clear a backlog as these are temporary changes.

Here a cap of +/- 15 percent protects the subscription prices from fluctuating too suddenly for librarians. There were no other economic factors to take into account.

Full transparency, pricing information and all figures can be found at royalsociety.org/journals

Celebrating the lives and scientific achievements of Fellows of the Royal Society.

Each volume of Biographical Memoirs contains a carefully researched and creatively written set of memoirs, which portray both the human and professional sides of scientific success and accomplishment. They are often written by a close colleague or research collaborator with a contribution from the family, and give insights into the lives of eminent mathematical, physical, biological and medical scientists and engineers.

Discover some of the most fundamental and significant findings in scientific history.

Launched in 2017 The Journals Archive contains high quality full colour images of the original publications from 1665 to 1996. It is significantly easier to read and more searchable than previous archive material.

A major resource for History of Science courses, it covers works in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Maths and the broad interdisciplinary studies for which Royal Society journals are so well known. As a substantial corpus of work in early modern English, it is also of interest to linguistics departments.

The Journals Archive is the only way to guarantee perpetual access to all Royal Society journals from 1665 to 1996. It offers significant value to libraries who need to reduce print holdings or off-site storage costs, and can release over 50 metres of shelf space.

Notable authors include Sir Christopher Wren, Benjamin Franklin, James Clerk Maxwell, Alan Turing, Kathleen Lonsdale, Stephen Hawking and Dorothy Hodgkins.

Prepay open access membership Prepay membership enables you to completely cover APC’s for researchers affiliated to your institution. Prepay members deposit a sum, from which APC’s are deducted at a 10% discount. Your institution authorises each payment before it is processed, meaning that you have complete control over which projects and researchers are supported by the fund. There is no time limit on the funds being spent.
