Field Application of Foul-Release Coatingo-friendly technologies are currently on the rise in most

marine and offshore industries. Ship owners, ship-

builders, and paint manufacturers are engaged in the re-

duction of VOCs and CO2 emissions. Aside from

decreasing environmental impact, low-friction hull coat-

ings in particular are becoming popular with ship owners as an

effective method of operational cost reduction. Many ship own-

ers prefer to use silicone foul-release coating (FRC); however,

this material requires more care with application than that of

conventional self-polishing copolymer anti-fouling coating (SPC

A/F). Consequently, shipbuilders are concerned with FRC appli-

cation not only during construction, but also after delivery.

This article describes a study conducted during which the au-

thors investigated several potential defects of field-applied FRC,

and made suggestions about how to avoid them.

Normally FRC is applied as shown in Figure 1. FRC can be ap-

plied at the block painting stage or during a redocking stage.

Seeding

Flocculation of solid material by a physical or a chemical reac-

tion can result in seeding, which is the formation of large parti-

cles referred to as gels. This event does not always occur, but it

is seen in some batches of paint after mixing, and can also clog

the spray tip. Repeatability tests were carried out with each coat-

ing type by sampling several batches of material and observing

the reaction time with air. Silicone coatings are very sensitive to

atmospheric moisture, even under winter conditions. Reaction

test results of each component to moisture (base, curing agent,

and catalyst) noted that only the catalyst (Part C) reacted with air

after five minutes of exposure (Fig. 3). The catalyst changed into

a gel state by itself.

As a result of this test, it is recommended that FRC should be

carefully handled by mixing each component just before applica-

tion. Catalysts should not be opened earlier than 10 minutes be-

fore mixing to prevent reaction with moisture.

Pin Holes

Even with effective surface treatment, pin holes may still be de-

tected and may be due to one of the following causes. If the ves-

sel has been immersed in the sea water for more than six

months, especially in the summer season, holes can form from

biocide leaching out from the film and can cause a capillary phe-

nomenon.

Considerations During ApplicationSpray Dust

Compared to conventional coatings, applying silicone-based,

anti-fouling coatings by airless spray can produce a large

amount of spray dust, which can easily lead to a surface contam-

ination issue. This problem occurs even when FRC is applied

under protection nets installed around the vessel from top to

bottom. Spray dust can also travel around the building dock con-

taminating other vessels under construction. In order to remove

the overspray dust, a method such as high-pressure water jet-

ting should be used. The builder should reinforce protection

methods such as employing containment and broadening the

protection area. Figure 2 shows the installed protection net.

Ventilation

When FRC is applied at the dry dock, a protective system should

be installed (as above), which means that these areas become

enclosed spaces, which presents a risk of explosion caused by

solvent saturation. It therefore becomes necessary for the

builder to analyze the flow path of air and arrange for the use of

proper ventilation equipment.

Fluid analysis of solvents suggested that to provide proper

ventilation and keep exposure limits at acceptable levels, the op-

timum arrangement of fans can be calculated by the size and

geometry of both the dock and the ship, and the part or parts

being sprayed.

As mentioned previously, FRC can be applied during the re-

docking stage before sea trials. In this case, a conventional anti-

fouling coating is applied at the block-painting stage to prevent

excessive sea organisms from attaching to the hull during moor-

ing at the quay side. Therefore, FRC should be applied only after

high-pressure washing and power-tool cleaning to remove sea

organisms at the dock.

Secondly, after surface preparation, contamination such as the

product of a reaction between copper oxide and sea water can re-

main on the film surface. Thus, a mist coat (or sealer coat) is rec-

ommended after fresh water washing to remove surface

contamination.

Cissing

This defect is known as a kind of wetting problem caused by oil

or other contaminants on the surface. Cissing can occur when

the surface is contaminated by low surface tension material, but

this condition was found on the FRC finish coat in the late after-

noon and was presumed to be caused by moisture condensation

on the surface. Accordingly, reproducibility tests were carried

out to simulate the actual conditions.

Moisture condensation, water spray and dry specimens were

prepared. An FRC finish was then applied to every specimen.

After the test, the wetted panels caused cissing. The dry one did

not (Fig. 4). This means that the surface condition is very impor-

tant, because FRC may easily create this defect by its hydropho-

bic property. The coating inspector and manager in charge of the

painting project should carefully check the surface condition be-

fore FRC application.

After ApplicationMechanical Damage

Silicone FRC has a good surface appearance, but the coating film

does not have great strength. Therefore, FRC films are easily

susceptible to mechanical damage even though the coating ma-

terial is cured. This damage can result in not only partial detach-

ment of film, but also in large areas of delamination. There are

many potential reasons; low temperature, low film thickness, or

exceeding the recoating interval between the anti-corrosive and

the tie coat/finish coat. It is crucial to carefully manage these

variables before and after application.

Vessel Slippage

Vessel slippage on the support blocks in the dry dock during the

block-build stage, and at the redocking stage, was shown to

damage the FRC paint film. Initially, this vessel slippage was

thought to be due to an uneven surface in the dock; however, the

surfaces were found to be flat.

Vessel slippage was assessed in various tests. First, frictional

resistance was evaluated with two coating schemes: a conven-

tional SPC A/F coating and FRC (Table 1).

Test specimens were fully cured and then friction tests (based

on a modified ice friction test for ice-going vessels) were car-

ried out. In this test, the specimens were moved forward and

backward horizontally under pressure, based on the yard prac-

tice, and the frictional resistance was measured. (The average

support block pressure is about 40kg/cm2.)

To mimic the support blocks used in practice, two types were

mocked up for the resistance testing as shown in Figure 5. The

block on the left is a new concept developed in an attempt to re-

duce mechanical damage of film. The block on the right is the

general composition of support blocks used in the yard.

After the friction test, the SPC A/F was found to have a higher

friction resistance than the FRC (Table 2). The tendency for me-

chanical damage is higher in the normal support block type than

in new concept one (Fig. 6, p. 28).

The friction tests showed that FRC has a slippery surface, and

how this contributes to film damage was further evaluated. The

surface condition of the two paint systems was observed under

load in the laboratory. The SPC A/F surface had no change be-

fore and after the load being applied, but in the case of the FRC,

the coating film was squeezed out around the support block after

loading. This might be caused by film properties due to the FRC

film being very soft and slippery. The stress can be associated

with thermal effects such as contraction or expansion from weld-

ing and fluctuation between day and night temperatures. Figure

7 shows the squeezed film, and Figure 8 illustrates the slippage

theory of FRC.

In an effort to improve the support block composition and pre-

vent slippage, we added a laminating film on the normal block in

the dry dock stage, and inserted a cotton cloth between the hull

and the block to increase friction resistance in the redock stage

(Fig. 9). Since adopting these two methods, the slippage phe-

nomenon has not occurred.

ConclusionsRegarding each potential issue discussed thus far, the following

conclusions can be reached.

• It is impossible not to generate spray dust, but workers can mini-

mize the quantity and spread of dust by using proper spray pres-

sure on the pump and adequate containment at the work site.

• When FRC spray work is conducted in an enclosed place, a venti-

lation system should be considered.

• During FRC spray application, coating materials should be ex-

posed to moisture for the shortest amount of time possible. It is

very important to carefully inspect the substrate condition before

coating application.

• In order to avoid film damage, application project supervisors

should pay particular attention to environmental and drying condi-

tions.

• The structure (or block) to which FRC is being applied might have

propensity to slip, thus supporting material should be carefully

considered.

• FRC is a product with novel technology and beneficial properties

especially from an environmental point of view. However, to make

effective use of this material, advanced application skills should be

adapted to optimize its performance.
