,)'pecial collections are usually library materials selected.for specific purposes to meet specific needs. They are rare books and nwnuscripts which provide resources for the increasing needs ofthe research con11nunity in an academic or research institution. The study covers three universities in South-west Nigeria. 7hese universities are Lagos State University (LASU), Bowen Unil'ersity, fll'o, and Covenam ( 'nirersity, Ota. One hundred and ninety-three respondents were sampled(or this study The descriptivl! si/ITey and stratified random sampling method was adopted.fhrthis study. A structured questionnoire l1"US used to gather data .from the respondents. Data were analysed in tables using simple percentages and 111eun. The study showed that there is a high level o{utili::ation ofspecial collections in the selected unil'asities. The re!>pondents, howeve1; pointed out poor bibliographic details of these special co/lee lions as a mojor hindrance to their easy accessibility and retrieval.

Introduction Special collections arc usually library materials selected for specific purposes to meet

specific needs. These co llections are special categories grouped together and are different from convent iona l materials usually found in the library. lgbeka and Ola (20 1 0) arc of the vic11 that. depending on the ir mandate and pol icies, different libraries has different types of special co llections. Accord ing to 1\gyven-Gyasi (2008), spec ial collections arc rare books and manuscripts which provide resources for the increasing needs of the research community in an academic or research institution. Special collections seek to raise the profil e of the Universii) and its Library by achieving recognition of the regional and national sign ifi cance of its collections. In addition, spec ial co llections synthesize, correlate and document the history and thought o f distingui shed people, they arc referred to as mines of information il lustrating the ri chness of the hi story, cul ture and civilization of people al l over the world. Special co llections arc ind ispcns iblc to students, researchers and librarians: their compos ition makes them vulnerable to pilferage and mutilation.

Ogbuiyi and Okpc (20 13) pos ited that an academic library prO\ ides information resources for post graduate students to carry out effective learn ing and research, to the teaching staff resources to support teaching and research: in all, the library is expected to prov ide in formation resources for extra-curricular activities. It is a fact that the quality and strength of any educational program I ics on the I ibrary; it docs not depend on hovv magnificent the building is, but on the proper usc of it. The ma in goa l o f an academic library is to support the objectives a university, which are general ly in the area of teaching. research and service (A ina, 2004; Mabawonku, 2004; Johnson, 2006).

University libraries arc estab lished with the primary goa l of providing information to the students, staff and workers of the uni versity communi ty. Yusuf and lwu (20 I 0) asserted that a Uni vers ity library is an indispensable instrument for intell ectual development being a store house o f information both for students and staff. One of the objectives of academic li brari es in Nigeri a is to deve lop and maintain collecti ons oC inf'ormation resource in all fo rmats print and non print and to make these informati on resources available and accessible to all. It is pertinent. therefore, that university libraries fac ilitate information resource to meet academic staff members' research needs. Supporting th is objective. Chi senga (2006) observed that the central purpose o(' librarics is to provide a service: access to In formation, and modern information and communication technologies, espec ially computers. Nwczch and Shabi (20 II ) outlined books, journal s, government publications, indexes, abstracts as some of the resources to be made avai !able and access ible to library users.

To achieve these objecti ves of satisfying the information needs of" the user community. the library needs to acquire current and relevant materials in both print and non-print fo rmats. It is the duty of the library to identify the information needs of its users and ensu re their presence in libraries for immediate usc (Aguolu & Aguo lu , 200:2.; /\i na.2002). The usc of information resources is indispensable to the teaching, learning and research activities of postgraduate students in any university system.

Object ives oft he Study The object ives of the study were, to:

Methodology The study covers three uni versiti es in South-west Nigeria, and they all have di verse specia l co llect ions for the ir users. These arc Lagos State Uni vers ity (L/\SU), Bowen and Covenant Uni\crsity. One hundred and ninety-three respondents were sampled and used for this study. The descri pti ve survey and stratified random sampli ng method was adopted for th is study.!\ structured questionnai re was used to gather data from the respondents. The resu lts of the study arc shown in tables using simple percentages and mean.

Table I above shows the ranking of the degree of utilization of specia l co llection matcrial sb~ rostgrad uatc students in selected academic libraries in Nigeri a as follows:- Journals had a Mean sco re of'3.46 and was ran ked highest. followed by Thesis and Dissertati on wh ich had the mean of 3.44. Technical Reports. Mean of 2.87, Conference proceedings had a mean o f2.77. Manuscrirts with the Mean of2. 73, Inaugural/Faculty lectures, mean of2. 70. A fricana materi als Mean of 2.68, CD-ROM had a mean of 2.6 1, Gazettes. mean of 2.59. Maps and atl ases mean of 2.55, Patents, mean of 2.48, Annual reports, with the mean of 2.46. Govcrnm~nt publications. mean of 2.45. Occasional papers mean of'2.37. Wh ite papers mean of 2.37 and lastly Blue prints wh ich had the mean score of2.28.

Table 2 above shows the ran king of the factors respons ible for the undcrutili zation of special co ll ect ions in the se lected acadcn•ic libraries . Problem w ith the citation in bibliographic reference with the mean of 4.04 was ranked highest by the ir mean sco re rating and was followed by Poor bib liographic information which makes the citation difficult mean of 4.03.

Ja I)iscussion of Find ings 1d The finding of this study reveals that journa ls have the highest utilization, with the 5, mean of 3.46. This can be traced back to the ir ranking of uti lization as shown in table I as n scoring the highest in uti lization. In fact majority of the postgraduates find their university

library performance on spec ial collections satisfactory. Users' access ibi li ty and uti li zation of specia l collections clea rly determine the re levancy of the materi als to the users. Lack of

d accessibi li ty ind icates irrelevancy of the mate rials. Access ing the collections gives an opportunity (or the users to cri tically examine the co llection. and make suggestions on how the collection can be improved. The stronger the collection. the more likely it is patronized.

c The findings of this stud) further revea l that majori ty of the respondents (mean of '1.04) claim that they have problems with the poor bibliographic information which made the citation of the special collections consu lted difficult. This cou ld be considered to be too high. this suggests that Un iversity li braries need to organize seminars and workshops for publ ishers. so as to encourage them to constantly include special co llections in catalogues and also make bibliographic citations avai lable in national databa es, thi s makes fo r easy access and usc special co llections in univers ity libraries.

This implied that there is poor organization of spec ial collect ions in the uni versity libraries sampled. This buttressed the fact that organ ization or spec ia I collections is d i mcu lt.

The study also exposed the undcrutil ization of most special co llections and the factors responsible for it. This in itse lf has affected the usage and perception of postgraduate who need them most. This call for concern because igeria has the largest number of Universities in /\{'r ica and weaknesses exposed could have far reaching implications to academia and research. The results of the study pose a challenge to libraries and information profess iona ls in that they have to be proactive in order to ensure that library users get quick and easy access to resources they need. Even though special collections need to be properly handled, physica l! ) protected and accessibility to these collection should be contro ll ed. ! suggest that use rs should be allowed to roam in the stack because they are like ly to pick up materials of interest

Conclusion and Recommendations Based on the findings oflhis study, it is discovered that specia l collections in Nigerian

academic libraries arc COJ1!parati vcly gross ly underutili zed, and lacks proper coordination for easy retrieval and usc, and thi s makes users believe that universiti es in Nigeria do not hold materia Is of interest to them. llowever, for these co llections to be well explo itcd and uti I izcd, thci r location must be known, the places of storage must be proper iII um i natcd; there must be a standard way of organ ization for easy retrieval, and academic I ibraries should be encouraged to constantly update their special collection to recent collections.

In view ofthe findings, the study therefore recommends tha~:

1. Postgraduates, no matter their status, need special co llections for their research. The fact that lots of primary and very recent in formati on could be derived from special collections should be an incentive fo r usi ng them. Librarians in uni,·e rs ity libraries should be more committed to meeting the needs of these postgraduates by organ i;.ing these special co ll ecti ons in such a manner that wi ll make the ir retrieva l and util i/.ation easy for the use rs.

11. Internet connectivity o ffers a lot of opportunities to harness networked information. There arc many too ls online that could be used to access spec ial co ll ections therefore Librarians should avail themselves the opportun ity to identify, usc and interact\\ ith all these too ls. They should al so make training and re-trai ning a priority so that they can update themselves and acquire new ski ll s required to serve their users better.

111. It is also of paramount im portance that spec ial coll ections availa ble in the University libraries that arc not born digital to be converted to digital. This wil l make it easier for users to access and make utmost usc of them. Converting such collections to digital will also solve the problem of space and would also afford the opportun ity of severa l users access ing the same material at the same time.
