President’s Report

Dear Members,

In 2012 Wenty is celebrating its 100th year of rugby league participation. The highlight of these celebrations was a reunion held on Saturday 9 June.

This fabulous occasion saw more than 500 players and officials from the past and present gather in The Starlight Room to share stories with their team mates. The event was also an opportunity to recognise some of the greatest ever players that pulled on our famous black and white jersey with the

unveiling of the greatest teams across three separate eras and a Team of the Century.

One of the highlights of the night was the appearance of one of Rugby League’s greatest ever players, Lewis Jones, to accept a place in the Team of the Century.

Now a spritely 81 years old, Lewis travelled all the way from england to attend the night and to listen to the great man speak was truly wonderful. For those of you too young to remember Lewis Jones, he was a dual International, playing 7 Rugby Tests for his native Wales while still a teenager before turning professional and joining the famous Leeds Club for, at that time, a world record fee. To this day he is still regarded as one of the greatest ever Welsh Rugby League players and the scoring records he set for Leeds have only recently been surpassed.

Celebrations aside, this year continues to be a terrific one for the Club with our building works progressing extremely well. In July we opened the new Wenty Café, Wenty Outdoor Lounge and the partially completed Wenty Indoor Lounge. The finish of these new facilities is outstanding and I encourage all of you to come and try them out for yourself.

The new Wenty Café in particular offers Members a fantastic new dining option with a range of cook to order meals and light snacks available.

I wish all of our Dads a happy Father’s Day on Sunday 2 September.

Ian McCannPresident

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

After posting a record profit in 2011 it is pleasing that our good trade has continued into 2012 in spite of all of the disruptions caused by our building program.

We are truly grateful for your patience and understanding as we make improvements to your Club.

In late June we took our main lift offline for 14 days to fully refurbish it. I am pleased to say that the work was completed ahead of schedule and we look forward to improved reliability from this important facility. Please note that access via the lift to The Starlight Room level is still offline until work in that area is completed, however you can access The Starlight Room via a chair lifter at the Southern Starlight Room entrance.

Work continues on the new Noodle Bar and we expect to have this new eatery open within a few months. This new outlet will serve a range of fast cook to order Asian dishes which can be eaten within a small seating area in the Noodle Bar or taken to the Wenty Lounge or other areas of the Club to be enjoyed.

We have recently expanded our dining options to include The Magpie Bar. You can now order from a selection of meals directly from The Magpie Bar. Your meal will be prepared in the new Wenty Café and delivered directly to your table in Magpie Sports Bar.

We are also taking the opportunity to make some improvements to our existing Lawsons Bistro and Lucido Italian Restaurant. Lawsons will have the servery areas reconfigured to provide for more efficient ordering while Lucido will see the installation of privacy screens to provide diners with a more intimate experience.

We have been making improvements to our Audio Visual experience for Members by installing a number of new 65 and 70 inch TVs around the Club. I am sure these will be greatly appreciated as we head towards the NRL Finals.

I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Dave Brace Chief executive Officer

Community

CommunityActive Women’s Health ProjectAs part of the Clubgrants Scheme, Wenty Leagues has provided $9620 to Boronia Multicultural Services to facilitate physical health and swimming classes for women from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Boronia aims to provide practical support to marginalised groups in the area as a way of helping people overcome barriers to participation in the economic, social and cultural life of Australia.

With the grant, Boronia conducted two ten-week swimming courses that were developed to be culturally appropriate for more than forty-five women, including students, young mothers and retirees from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. The classes also educated the women on general health, nutritious eating and how to remain physically fit.

The grant from Wenty Leagues covered the cost of hiring a pool and swim teachers to abide with the womens’ customs, a translator and child care costs for both ten-week courses.

Boronia Multicultural Services is a non-profit community organisation advocating for the interests of refugees and migrants, and Wenty Leagues would like to congratulate Boronia on the successful completion of the Active Women’s health Project.

Chefs Jarod Fowler and Lucas Vella with a couple of kids from Ronald McDonald House Westmead

Meals from the HeartOn Tuesday 10 July Wenty Leagues staff volunteered their time to cater for 70 people including sick children and their families at The Ronald McDonald house in Westmead.

2nd Year Apprentice Chef Jarod Fowler devised the menu and managed the kitchen on the night. The menu consisted of Spaghetti and Meatballs in a chunky tomato sauce as a main and Frogs in a Pond (chocolate frogs in jelly) as dessert for the kids, and Crispy Skin Chicken Florentine with bacon mash, broccolini and jus followed by Double Chocolate Brownies with Frangelico custard for the parents.

Wenty Leagues staff were moved by the brave and enduring stories they were told by some of the families. The evening’s reward was apparent with smiles and laughter filling the room as families enjoyed simply having dinner together and, even but for a little time, forgetting their worry and strife.

This was the Club’s 6th event in 4 years with The Ronald McDonald house.

Thank you to the kids and families for briefly letting us into your lives, and we wish you all the best in the future.

Refurbishing Ronald McDonald House Westmead

A $20,000 grant from Wenty Leagues to Ronald McDonald house Westmead (RMhW) has gone a long way.

With the grant, RMhW were able to reconfigure parts of the house to create new office spaces that have helped staff deal with the growing number of residents.

The grant assisted the building and fit out of the new offices including repainting and recarpeting, and installing cupboards, storage spaces, desks and work stations.

Wenty Leagues hopes the offices help Ronald McDonald house staff, whose jobs are vital to kids and families in need.

Development

Development UpdateWenty LoungeThe newly renovated Wenty Lounge has been undertaken in two stages to create indoor and outdoor lounge spaces.

The glass panelled wall that separates the lounges allows for natural light to fill the indoor space and provides a smooth transition between the two areas.

The new Outdoor Lounge is now finished, complete with new furniture and fittings.

The Outdoor Lounge, overlooking the Western side of the Club, has been tiled and furnished with wind and rain resistant furniture.

On either side of the Outdoor Lounge is banquet seating with bold striped cushions. The remaining seating, white and grey wicker seats with olefin cushions, provides a vibrant contrast to the neutral colours of the tiles and wall panelling.

A plasma screen, external heating, feature lights and decorative planter boxes have also been installed in the Outdoor Lounge.

At the time of writing, work on the Indoor Lounge is continuing with the seating capacity in this area set to expand.

The area has received a stone-clad fireplace, new carpet, plasma screens and drum pendant lighting.

The Wenty Lounge will become an area of choice for casual dining and entertainment with construction of a stage and dance floor set to commence later this year.

Development Update

noodle BarThe Noodle Bar is progressing well.

Architects and builders have successfully dealt with a few structural challenges in this space and created a new raised level in place of the previous toilet block.

A steel frame has been erected as the platform for the new level with wiring and plumbing installed.

Once complete, the Noodle Bar will feature thick-timbered, rustic Asian benches with oriental themed fabric cushions, polished white granite counter tops and tiles and floor-to-ceiling timber blades.

The Noodle Bar is set to serve a range of Oriental menu items in a casual dining setting and will be a complementary addition to the Club’s famous Imperial Dragon Chinese Restaurant which will continue to serve a-la-carte and take-away Cantonese cuisine.

CarparkThe carpark extensions have advanced well under Antoun Civil.

Underground services including electrical wiring and storm water drains have been installed as part of stage 2 of carpark renovations.

The biggest progress, however, is the impending commencement of construction for the slip-lane from the Great Western highway.

Weather permitting, work for the slip-lane is due to commence in September.

Sub Clubs

Sub ClubsDISTRICT FOOTBALLnSW CupAt last report the NSW Cup side had completed Round 9 which then took us down to a cold Illawarra Stadium to take on the Illawarra Cutters. Despite the uncomfortable conditions Wenty played a controlled game and were never going to lose and ran out winners 24-6. The next game was against the struggling Wests Magpies and in an expected result Wenty were victors 58-16. Balmain Ryde eastwood were our next opponents and in a game where we were not at our best were beaten 24-18. Round 13 saw us return to Ringrose to take on Manly and on this day Brett Cook’s boys brought their A game and were clear winners 58-18. highlight of the day being a 4 try haul to KJ McKenzie. Round 14 we presented at a wet and miserable henson Park taking on the Newtown Jets. Although the Jets fielded an almost NRL team we were not disgraced and fought hard although ultimately being beaten 26-12. Mounties were our next opponents on the day of our 100 yr. reunion celebration but Mounties spoilt the party and ran out easy winners 40-22. Round 16 we hosted Newcastle at Ringrose and what a difference a week makes. Although fielding a very strong side Newcastle was no match for Wenty and in one of the more impressive displays the Magpies won clearly 42-22. Round 17 Wenty had the bye and at this stage of the season are well positioned in 4th place on the ladder. Congratulations to Shane Shackleton and Troy Savage who won selection in the NSW Residents side to play Queensland in the curtain raiser before origin 3.Bundy CupRound 4 Wenty travelled to Belmore to take on the competition favorites St Johns Park and although having chances and scores level with less than 5 to play were ultimately unable to hold out St Johns Park and conceded 2 late tries to be beaten 28-16. Burwood North Ryde were our next opponents and they ran into an Alex Chan side on a day when everything fell into place with Wenty winning 68-10. Round 6 the strong Windsor side proved too good on the day winning 32-20 in what was a disappointing performance in comparison to the previous week. Next opposition was Cabramatta and in an extremely tough encounter Wenty was able to get the points 24-12. Round 8 we hosted Mounties and although leading clearly with a short time remaining logged off and then had to pull out all stops as boys from Mt Pritchard stormed home but were denied by the Magpies 33-30. The Round 9 encounter saw Wenty take on one of the new teams to the competition in Blacktown Workers who never gave up but were no match for a red hot side and we were clear winners 84-0. highlight was a 4 try effort from Peter Prime who was outstanding. Alex has the nucleus of a premiership side but like the NSW Cup side need to be more consistent.EventsAfter 18 months of planning the big event happened on the 9th June with our 100 years Involvement of Rugby League celebrations being held in the Starlight Room. The function was attended by over 500 guests who were treated to a sumptuous meal and drinks. MC Jimmy Smith and Kristy McMahon’s catering staff were fantastic in making the night run as smoothly as it did. Many special guests attended but none more popular than the great Lewis Jones all the way from Leeds in england for the occasion. On behalf of the organising Committee a special thanks to the Wenty Leagues Club Board for their assistance in making the night so special.Ron Bottle – Secretary

JUnIOR RUGBY LEAGUESeason 2012 is over halfway and we have been going great to this point with many teams in contention to make the semi-finals from under 8s to A Grade who are going for their 10th win in a row, it all looks very promising. Our Under 9-1s continued our great tradition winning the prestigious Minchinbury Knockout in June. Coached by Gooch Gabrael they are a very well drilled side that are a credit to their coach, who has done a wonderful job imparting the basic skills of Rugby League to his players, big things are expected of this side, as at this time, they have conceded just one try in 10 games. Our Aspley fundraising Committee has been hard at work raising money to take 2 teams to QLD in October for the long weekend. This is the 44th year of reciprocating visits

to Aspley and we hope it continues for many years to come as it is a great experience for our players and officials that make the trip. Our 100th year celebrations were received very well with all participants having a wonderful time, the highlight for most was the visit from Lewis Jones from London, it may be the last we see of the Welsh Wizard in these parts and it was wonderful to see him make the effort to be here.Allan McGowan – Secretary

SWIMMInGAs we are still in our off-season I don’t have much to report. I wish one of our long time members Sylvia who has had a stay in hospital that you are feeling much better and on the road to recovery.Once again we had members travel to Queanbeyan for the 26th Annual Queens Legacy Swimming carnival over the long weekend. Festivities started with barefoot bowls on the Saturday afternoon for some members. Thereafter all members attended a meet and greet dinner held at Queanbeyan Bowling Club on Saturday evening. We then attended the Australian Defence Force pool at Duntroon for our swim on the Sunday morning where the temperature outside was a pleasant minus 2 degrees but the pool itself was heated. We then adjourned for a most enjoyable lunch and presentation at Queanbeyan Bowling Club. We fared very badly.- Julie Manning achieved second place in the 25 meters

handicap with +0.49 but it’s a bit hard to beat a 0.00 time.- We were a bit away in the 4 x 50 meters Crocodile Cup

with Sharon ellis, Rhonda hill, Ted Jolly and Ron Whitmore participating who achieved 7th place out 11 teams.

- We were a bit more successful in the 10 x 25 meter relay which consisted of Cathy henly, Karen hardy, Rhonda hill, Sharon ellis, Julie Manning, Robin Thompson, Tom Lamont, Ted Jolly, Dennis hill and Ron Whitmore who were placed 1st with +.094 off our time.

Congratulations to all of our players involved.Joe Minici also recently competed in the Victorian Snooker open where he was defeated by Steve Misfud 3-2.
