Alone

From childhood's hour I have not been 8 AAs others were; I have not seen 8 AAs others saw; I could not bring 8 B

My passions from a common spring. 8 BFrom the same source I have not taken 9 C

My sorrow; I could not awaken 8 CMy heart to joy at the same tone; 8 D

And all I loved, I loved alone. 9 DThen- in my childhood, in the dawn 8 E

Of a most stormy life- was drawn 8 EFrom every depth of good and ill 8 FThe mystery which binds me still: 8 FFrom the torrent, or the fountain, 8 GFrom the red cliff of the mountain, 8 GFrom the sun that round me rolled 8 H

In its autumn tint of gold, 7 hFrom the lightning in the sky 7 i

As it passed me flying by, 7 iFrom the thunder and the storm, 7 jAnd the cloud that took the form 7 j

(When the rest of Heaven was blue) 8 KOf a demon in my view. 7 k

Analysis

The title of the poem refers to a feeling, he feels so alone and it’s symbolic. The author speaks in the poem, it’s an omniscient narrator because he speaks about his childhood. It has got a normal structure, it has got one stanza and it has got twenty two lines. It has got verbs in active and passive form. The poem was written in 1829. It has got a rhythm because there are 8 syllables in most of lines. There are two similes:“...I have not been as other were” and “I have not seen as others saw”. These sentences are similes because he use the word “as” and it’s a comparison. The poem is about his childhood, he feels alone and he isn’t like the others. He feels very sad for that, and he see all negative because he hasn’t got friends, he’s alone.

Enjambment simil:The sentences are broken because they start in one line and finish in other line. The author, Edgar Allan Poe, Poe was born in Boston, in 1809, and he died in 1849, in Baltimore. Poe wrote a lot of poems, stories, novels...Poe was journalist too, he was a romantic writer and he had problems with alcohol and people think that he died because of that. His parents died when he was very young.

Song

Yesterday, There was so many things

I was never toldNow that I'm startin' to learn

I feel I'm growing old'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me

Old pictures that I'll always seeSome things could be better

In my book of memoriesPrayers in my pocket

And no hand in destinyI'll keep on movin' along

With no time to plant my feet'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me

Old pictures that I'll always seeSome things could be better

If we'd all just let them beYesterday's got nothin' for meYesterday's got nothin' for me

Got nothin' for meYesterday, There was so many things

I was never shownSuddenly this time I found

I'm on the streets and I'm all aloneYesterday's got nothin' for me

Old pictures that I'll always seeI ain't got time to reminisce old novelties

Yesterday's got nothin' for meYesterday's got nothin' for meYesterday's got nothin' for me

Analysis

The song is from Guns N’ Roses, a hard rock band from Los Angeles in the nineties’. The band was formed by:Axl Rose - VocalsSlash - First guitarIzzy Stradlin - Second guitarDuff Mckagan - BassMatt Sorum - Drums

The song is from their fourth album “Use Your Illusion II” (1991). This album is the most popular after his first album “Appetite for Destruction” (1987). Use Your Illusion II sold more than 24 million copies. This it's the last Guns N’ Roses album, they released another album in 1993, “The Spaghetti Incident?” but that album has got only cover versions of punk songs and is not a real Guns N’ Roses album, in The Spaghetti Incident? the band was completely dissolved. The band released “Chinese Democracy” in 2008 but, the band is not the same, and Axl Rose is the only original member and personally, that album will NEVER be a Guns N’ Roses album, because for me (and most Guns N’ Roses fans) Guns N’ Roses died when Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Matt Sorum and Duff Mckagan left the band. The song was written by Axl Rose and Billy Mccloud. This song doesn’t have the wild Guns N’ Roses characteristic sound like other songs like Welcome to the jungle, Paradise City or You Could be Mine, but, anyway, with songs like these, the band shows that they can do incredibles songs although they haven’t got a wild sound. The song is a very melancholy and sad song because they talk about the past in order to remember old times.
