JORDAN STRUCTURES IN GEOMETRY AND

ANALYSISCHO-HO CHU

CH

U

Jordan theory has developed rapidly in the last three decades, but very fewbooks describe its diverse applications. Here, the author discusses somerecent advances of Jordan theory in differential geometry, complex and functional analysis, with the aid of numerous examples and concise historicalnotes. These include: the connection between Jordan and Lie theory via theTits-Kantor-Koecher construction of Lie algebras; a Jordan algebraicapproach to infinite dimensional symmetric manifolds including Riemanniansymmetric spaces; the one-to-one correspondence between bounded symmetric domains and JB*-triples; and applications of Jordan methods in complex function theory. The basic structures and some functional analytic properties of JB*-triples are also discussedThe book is a convenient reference for experts in complex geometry or functional analysis, as well as an introduction to these areas for beginningresearchers. The recent applications of Jordan theory discussed in the bookshould also appeal to algebraists.

CAMBRIDGE TRACTS IN MATHEMATICS

This series is devoted to thorough, yet reasonably concise, treatments of topics in any branch of mathematics. Typically, a Tract takes up a singlethread in a wide subject, and follows its ramifications, thus throwing light on its various aspects. Tracts are expected to be rigorous, definitive and oflasting value to mathematicians working in the relevant disciplines. Exercisescan be included to illustrate techniques, summarize past work, and enhancethe book's value as a seminar text. All volumes are properly edited and typeset, and are published, initially at least, in hardback.
