J ordan began 2015 working frantically to secure the release of Muath al-Kasasbeh, a Jordanian fighter pilot who had been captured by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) after his jet crashed during a mission against the group in northern Syria on Dec. 24, 2014. In spite of the Jordanian government’s attempts to negotiate Kasasbeh’s safe return, ISIL released a video on February 3 showing the pilot being burned to death. Enraged, the Jordanian government increased its combat operations against ISIL and executed two prisoners, whose release ISIL had sought. Kasasbeh’s killing also solidified popular support for Jordan’s participation in the interna- tional campaign against ISIL that began in late 2014. Demography Population (2015): 6,749,000 3 .
