JON’S WOOD

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Jon’s Wood is a new broadleaved woodland planted in late 2018 on a gentle south west facing slope. The site occupies a prominent position in the landscape and provides attractive long distance views over the village of Crook and to the Wear valley beyond. The soils are fertile Brown earths providing excellent growing conditions for the young trees which have already grown well in their first season.

The site is laid out with grassy rides between the woodland blocks, and in season the grassland areas support a variety of wildflowers including bluebells in the spring and a carpet of buttercups in high summer.

The woodlands are planted with native broadleaved trees comprising an overall mix of 30% alder, 35% birch, 30% oak, and 5% wild cherry. Please note that exact composition varies by lot. Trees are protected with spiral guards and canes that will aid establishment and facilitate any maintenance tasks required. The individual lots are demarcated by wooden posts.

The entire woodland scheme (lots 1 to 4) is in the Woodland Carbon Scheme and is registered for the Basic Payment Scheme. Rights to the second payment of£1000/hectare due in 2023 will be allocated pro-rata to each lot. The vendor will require a new owner to enter into an agreement with the Forestry Commission to continue the care and maintenance of the woodland areas to achieve full establishment of the trees. This may require the replacement of any losses, although the early signs are that the trees are establishing well. For further details of the terms of the WCS contract, please contact the woodland manager.

These small woodland lots will appeal to first time buyers looking for an opportunity to own a native woodland, to nurture it and to watch it grow and mature. LOT 1: DOWFOLD WOOD 1.29 hectares / 3.20 acres
