    Many years ago, a man named Jonahlived in the land o f Israel. One day,

    God told him to go to Nineveh,the bigge st, most

    powerful cityin the world.

    Jonah disobeyed God ! Insteadof going to Nineveh, Jonah gotonto a ship and sailed away inthe opposite directio n to a placecalled Tarshish.

    T he LORD God sent out a great wind in to the sea.T here was a huge storm! The sailors fe ared theship might break apart and sink.

    T he storm got wo rse and worse. Terrif ied, thesailors prayed to their gods and threw all the cargooverboard to ligh ten the ship. But noth ing helped.

    J onah was the onl y person on board who wasn'tpraying. Instead, he was lying down inside the ship,sound asleep.

    T he ship's captain found him. “What ar e you doingsleeping? Get up! Say a prayert o your God! Maybe God will think

    of us, so that we will notbe destroyed.”

    The sailors didn't want to throwJonah overboard. So they rowed

    hard to bring the ship to land. Butt hey couldn't.

    There was onlyone thing to do!

    After praying for forgiveness, the sailo rslifted Jonah up a nd tossed himover the side.As Jonahdisappearedbelow the waves, t hesea became still a nd the

    wind died down. T he suddenchange in the wea ther scaredt he sailors more t han the

    storm did. They m ust haveknown only God could dot hat. In fear and

    wonder, theyworshiped the LO RD.

    Meanwhile, thedisobedientmessenger got abig surprise.Helplessly sinking in the depths of thesea, Jonah knew

    nothing could savehim from drowning.He would have

    drowned, too — butGod had other pl ans.

    T he LORD had prepared a big fish to sw allow upJ onah. The fish was right on time! One gulp andJ onah was out of the sea and intot he fish's belly. Jonah stayedinside the fish fo r three days.He had lots of tim e tot hink and pray.

    T hree days later, Jonah finally promise d to obeyGod. Right away, God spoke to the fish, and itvomited Jonah on to the beach.

    T he people of Nin eveh believed God's w ord. Theywent without food , and wore sackcloth t o show Godt hey were sorry f or their sins. Even th e kinghumbled himself b efore God. He got of f his throne,put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes. He c ommandedeveryone to turn f rom theirwicked ways and violence,and to pray that t heLORD would forgivet hem.

    God DID forgive them! It must have b een awonderful day of joy in Nine veh when the

    people realized that God hadforgiven t hem.

    … But oneperson wasvery angry.

    Jonah sat outsid e the city, waiting to s ee what Godwould do next. T he LORD God prepared a vine withbig leaves. It gr ew quickly, and shaded Jonah fromthe hot sun all da y.

    th e vine, for which you did no workand which you did not grow. Itcame up in a night and diedin a night.
