Newcomers of New Bern New Directions Newsletter Website: www.newbernnewcomers.org May 2014 May 2014, Letter from the Co-Presidents Jon and Mickey Miller Aloha! As an informal Hawaiian way of saying both hello and good-bye, Aloha is the perfect word with which to begin our final newsletter and our last club meeting for the season. But don’t worry – while we won’t have a club meeting until the new season starts in September, that doesn't mean we shut down, as activities will continue throughout the summer. Continue to check our website, www.newbernnewcomers.org as well as www.newbernnow.com for newcomers activities as well as events happening around town. Aloha also conveys affection, and it’s with great affection that we recognize our wonderful Newcomers friends. When we attended our first Newcomers Christmas social, the group at our table immediately bonded. Through many glasses of wine shared, many bike miles ridden, and countless laughs together, our Newcomers cohort have been great friends ever since. Most of us have served and continue to serve on the Board. We hope that the Newcomers Club has fulfilled your desire to become a part of a larger group that involves you in many of the wonderful aspects of life in New Bern. We’d like to acknowledge and thank all the members who have served either on the Board or as activity leaders. These are the folks who ensure that there is something for everybody and that nobody gets left out. This past year's activities and events are a testimony to all the hard work they put in for everyone's benefit. We’re pleased that a core group has stepped up for next year's Board and will continue to provide leadership to this club. The list of new Board members is included in this newsletter; please get to know them if you haven't already. We hope you’ll join us for our final meeting, May 14 th at 7:00 pm, in the Christ Church Ministry Center (311 Middle Street) as we install the newly elected Board members and have an opportunity to sign up for summer events. Please remember that those with last names beginning with C-J are asked to bring a snack to share. And finally, yet another reason to say Aloha as we prepare for our Hawaiian-themed end of year party on May 15 th at Carolina Colours. Shake out your grass skirt and coconut bra (or you might prefer Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops) and get ready for a lei’d back time! But hurry -- you only have until May 6 th to RSVP! Newcomers/AGN Boaters Group

The Boaters Group held its annual summer picnic at Jerry & Marci Crawford's house in Riverbend. We had a great turnout for the picnic despite the monsoons. The picture on the left shows the retiring Boat Group leader, Jack Fleming, and the new incoming co-leaders.

We are in the process of planning our proposed Agenda for the 2013-2014 Boating Season with many exciting events being looked into. We hope to have a good mix of boating activities, a couple of over night land cruises as well as a number of interesting day trips to visit area attractions tied in with some visits to area restaurants. In addition to these activities we are going to try and schedule a couple educational talks dealing with boating in local waters and other boating topics of interest

You must be a member of the Boater’s Group to participate in Group activities and you must be a member of either the AGN or Newcomers Club to be a member of the Boaters Group.

The goal is to have fun and meet new people. Bunco is a simple, no skill, dice game. You sit at a table of four with a partner across from you; then the partners rotate as the game continues. So this game is a great way to meet people in a small group. If you can toss three dice and recognize the numbers on the dice, then you can play this game! Each month we have 12 or 16 participants. Each time you participate, the cost is $5.00 per person with all money paid out as prizes at the end of that evening (please bring correct change). Host will provide dessert. Other participants please bring an appetizer for approx 8-10 people to be shared PLUS beverage of your choice that you would like to personally drink that evening. Participants will be notified by e-mail of the location prior to the event. Activity is held the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Advance sign-up is re-quired and is offered at the monthly New Bern Newcomer meeting. If space is still available after the meeting sign-up, then an email is sent to members who have expressed interest in Bunco.

February 27th, Foscue Plantation near Pollocksvile, NC

You can see from the picture that theweather was just perfect for a historicaltour. The plantation house was built in1824 by Simon Foscue, Jr., on the landthat his father first settled, the brickplantation house is, in fact, the seconddwelling built on the property. TheFoscue Plantation is touted as one ofthe "best documented plantations inCoastal North Carolina.". The weatherwas excellent, and the tour was veryinteresting. Unlike other historical site tours, we were able to walk through the rooms and get very close to the artifacts in the house.

November 21st , Spice Bouquet in Kinston, NC

We had a wonderful time at the SpiceBouquet in Kinston. We attended acooking class narrated by our chef Frank. He told us all about their history and howtheir spices came about. We were treatedto an outstanding presentation of how tocook with their spices-which included ourmenu of Greek Salad, Athenian Chicken, triple roasted potatoes and vegetablemedley-topping off with Cannoli Cake.

The food was excellent and a good timewas had by all.

Sharing a meal together is one of the best ways to get to know folks. The dining in group is a great opportunity to meet different newcomers each month. While visiting in homes during the winter and spring months, 8 newcomers – singles or couples - share experiences and enjoy a delicious meal to which we all contribute a dish. Once everyone who wants to participate signs up we will organize the list so that the groups rotate and are new each month. You are the host only once during the year – you decide the main dish and the others bring wine, an appetizer, salad and a dessert! And what a great way to share your favorite recipes and try new dishes!

We have six active groups of eight enjoying Dining In each month but we really need some newcomers to indicate that they would be willing to be alternates for March and April. Just let us know if you would like to fill in sometime when someone has to miss. When called, You would just have to take a dish and enjoy a dinner with other newcomers.

Please contact us for more information or inquire at the monthly meeting.

Thursday February 28th – Floyd's 1921 inMorehead City, NC

This restaurant is located in a historic homeoffering and offers "a taste of the old south". Itis located at 400 Bridges Street in MoreheadCity. Wednesday September 25th – Morgan's Tavern &Grill

Our First Dining Out for this season was at Morgan'sTavern & Grill. They advertise "great service with acasual and comfortable atmosphere" which couldn't have summed it up any better. We had attentive wait staff and enjoyed delicious meals with 26 New Comer's present (both singles & couples). Newcomers / Alumni Golf is based on the premise that the game should be fun. Making friends is paramount; proficiency is immaterial. We welcome all skilllevels. Rules are what each player wants them to be. Some players adhere to the stricter rules of the USGA, while others follow the lax GW rules -- count everystroke that you like. If you don’t like it, don’t count it; or finally, don’t count anything and pick up your ball any time you wish!

We schedule a golf outing once a month, normally on a Wednesday or Thursday, and play 12 months of the year. We travel to courses in the New Bern area and try to keep within a one-hour drive. We also arrange carpooling for the out-of-New Bern trips. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, come join us. Youwill have a good time!

Scheduled Events:

Thursday, May 15th the Newcomers / Alumni golf Outing will be held at the River Bend Golf Course in River Bend just off of Route 17/17 business. Tee times starting at 10:30 am, cost is $35.00. As this is a local course we will not meet to car pool.

The adventures have included: kayaking/canoing, hiking, kite flying, bicycle riding, and boat rides. We either bring our lunch or stop by a nearby restaurant.

SHACKLEFORD BANKS Outdoor Adventures, September 21st

The ferry dropped us off at the very western end of the island by the Beaufort Inlet. The weather was perfect with some clouds to keep the beach cool. The whole group (the early group left at10:00, but there were somestragglers that came at 11:00)convened on the beach not far fromwhere the ferry dropped us off. Thereal adventurers trekked across theisland and caught excellent views ofthe wild horses.

Check out the photo album on ourweb site. Others, like myself stuckto the sandy shores and looked forshells. Many found conks and othersea shells which turned out to makea fun day.

The Wine Social Group is for everyone, not just wine drinkers! Each couple/single who signs up is asked to bring a bottle of wine, or whatever they would like to drink, and an hors d'oeuvre to share with everyone.

Beginning in September, 2014, wine socials will be held on the THIRD SATURDAY of each month beginning at 6 PM. Hopefully this will allow everyone to plan ahead. Those who have signed up for this activity are notified by email of the date of the get-together and given directions to the hosts' home. RSVPs are required because of space limitations.

Hosting a party is easy! You choose the month and the date convenient for you. (Generally the parties are on Friday or Saturday night.) The activity chairman will:

• Notify everyone who signed up at the General Meeting by email of the date• Receives the RSVPs of those that plan on attending• Brings the wine glasses to the host's home• Supplies the name tags. • The party attendees bring the food and beverages—the host supplies the house! If you

would like to limit the party to a certain number of people, just notify the activity leader.

The Wine Social activity is open to all members of the Newcomers Club of New Bern and their guest.

Come join us for food, drink, and friendshipno knowledge of wine is required!

Wine Socials in the past:

January 25th at Niles and Barbara Compton's house near Pollocksville

The first of this new year's festivitieswas a terrific party with someunplanned excitement. They livenear Pollocksville right next to theTrent river. It is a beautiful out of theway location. When we arrived,Niles was outside in the frigid colddirecting us into their driveway. Hewas acting as the highway mangreeter. As indicated in the picturebelow we quickly started breakingout the wine and appetizers combined with some great conversations. We did have an exciting moment at the end of the party when one of our members had what we believe to be an allergicreaction to something and collapsed to the floor. All of us were very concerned, and we ended up calling the ambulance. The member was transported to the hospital and most of the steam went out of theparty after the EMR crew left. It will be a memorable wine social for some time. We were happy to report that the doctors found him to be fine and it was some type of allergic reaction.
