New artists are, according to an old adage, the lifeblood of the music industry, but the digital age has brought a transfusion to the very process that rolls artists out.
Where labels once discovered, developed and marketed acts, the current model often requires that the performers develop both their craft and an audience before they find their way onto a record-company roster. Thus, the seven artists that will launch their first album or EP for a prominent imprint during t h e f i r s t s i x months of 2019 have invariably c r e a t e d s o m e kind of history on their own. That includes building a n a u d i e n c e t hrough heav y touring and/or producing EPs for self-release.
The creative class rolling out between January and June shows just how much the genre’s marketing formula and content is changing. EMI Nashville artist Jon Langston is releasing tracks one at a time rather than in a collectable bundle. Broken Bow artist BLANCO unites the country/hip-hop trend in a next-level blend. And three of
the entries incorporate foreign roots: Twinnie, a singer/actor from the United Kingdom; Canadian singer/songwriter Aaron Goodvin; and King Calaway, a six-man ensemble with two European-bred members.
Here’s a look at the seven acts breaking out during the first half of 2019 with the equivalent of their first album or EP for a prominent country label:
• B L A N C O ( B r o k e n B o w ) — “Speechless” may be a Dan + Shay hit, but it’s also a word that BBR Music Group executive vp Jon L o b a u s e s t o describe Blanco Brown , whose authentic hybrid s o u n d i s s e l f-defined as “trailer t r a p ” — p a r t trailer park, part trap music. After
splitting his childhood between the urban ’hood and summers in the country, he is able to seamlessly knit multiple genres together, blending Tracy Lawrence, T-Pain, “Dixieland Delight” and The Beach Boys in a series of yet-to-be-released tracks. Real artists don’t just break rules; sometimes they rewrite them.

• A aron Goodv in ( Rev iver) — The w inner of t he Canadian Country Music Association’s songwriter of the year award, Goodvin placed songs with Luke Bryan, Jon Pardi and Cole Swindell on his way to a deal with Warner Music Canada. His voice has a grainy tinge, applied to a mix of hooky uptempo songs and revealing ballads. Raised in Alberta, 420 kilometers from the High Valley boys, he spent much of 2018 in Nashville working on his U.S. debut, which will be released as part of a global rollout on Feb. 8.
• Sam Grow (Average Joes) — With three self-released EPs under his belt, the Maryland-bred Grow is an experienced music maker with his first full country album due in the spring. Having played a reported 200 live dates in 2018, he’s a hard-working band leader with a smoky vocal tone who counts Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke and Willie Nelson among his inf luences. Still, there’s a slight Daughtry undercurrent to his first Average Joes single, “History Repeats Itself,” due in late January.
• Lauren Jenkins (Big Machine) — Two years after issuing her inaugural EP, Jenkins lobs her first album, No Saint, into the market on March 15 with a voice that employs multiple personalities. Her lower resonance is haunting and spooky, while her upper register is biting and forceful. Quietly introduced on a 2014 Nashville album paying tribute to Mötley Crüe, her talents extend beyond the microphone: She wrote, co-produced and starred in a forthcoming short film, Running Out of Road.
• K ing Calaway (Broken Bow) — As countr y music becomes increasingly global, King Calaway is a natural evolution, a six-piece band with roots that extend from Minnesota to Delaware to Scotland to Gibraltar. Its debut EP, rife with thick harmonies, poppy energy and likely a cover of Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With,” has a target date of Jan. 25. Produced by Ross Copperman (Dierks Bentley, Brett Eldredge), the band’s drummer has some key country heritage: Chris Deaton’s father is CMA Awards producer Robert Deaton.
• Jon Langston (EMI) — Langston is rolling out tracks in a Sam Hunt fashion: There’s no official major-label EP, though he has already digitally released five songs and expects to have perhaps three more in circulation by June. The previously self-released artist has toured aggressively in the Southeast, building an audience before manager Kerri Edwards’ KP Entertainment (Bryan, Swindell) picked him up. Langston’s delivery combines swagger and immediacy over a production that’s clearly geared for modern country radio.
• Twinnie (BMG) — The photo on her website has a distinct Shania Twain vibe, as does the pop-leaning hooks in her sometimes-danceable tunes, particularly the loping “Type of Girl.” Hailing from York in northeast England (you just know someone is going to label her “the Duchess of York”), Twinnie Lee Moore earned attention in the U.K. soap Hollyoaks and played the Country Music Association’s C2C Festival in 2017. Her first U.S. EP is expected Feb. 1.
Mitchell Tenpenny (center) dropped by Cumulus’ syndicated morning show on Dec. 17, days after the release of his debut album, Telling All My Secrets. He’s shown with Cumulus personality Ty Bentli (left) and Cumulus personality Chuck Wicks.
Ashley McBryde hung out with WPGB Pittsburgh PD J.D. Greene when she played Jergel’s on Dec. 12. From left: Warner Music Nashville national director/WAR radio and streaming James Marsh, Greene, McBryde and WMN Northeast/Midwest manager/WAR radio and streaming Anna Cage.
Jordan Davis participated in the WIL St. Louis Jinglefest. From left: WIL PD Scott Roddy, Davis, WIL music director Danny Montana and MCA Nashville director of Midwest promotion Donna Passuntino.

Dan + Shay, the duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, continue their domination of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and the airplay-, streaming- and sales-fueled Hot Country Songs survey (dated Jan. 12) with “Speechless” (Warner Bros./WAR).
The love song inspired by the duo’s wives, which Smyers and Mooney co-wrote with Jordan Reynolds and Laura Veltz, leads Country Airplay for a fourth week. It increases by 15 percent to 39.4 million audience impressions in the week ending Jan. 6, according to Nielsen Music. (All but two songs gain on the chart, reflecting the first full tracking week after holiday music returned to hibernation.)
“It’s very fitting to start the new year with ‘Speechless’ still at No. 1,” says Warner Music Nashville senior vp promotion and streaming Kristen Williams. “The guys have worked immensely hard to get to this point, and the entire team has been tireless in its efforts to execute their vision. Plus, thanks to country radio for its unending support. It’s going to be an exciting year.”
“Speechless” hit No. 1 for the first time on the Dec. 22, 2018-dated Country Airplay list. The track becomes the first four-week leader since Luke Combs’ “She Got the Best of Me,” which led for four frames beginning on the chart dated Oct. 27, 2018.
As far as duos go, Dan + Shay is the first to stretch a stay atop Country Airplay to four weeks since 2014, when Florida Georgia Line’s “Stay” ruled for four frames that January. The pair with the longest-running No. 1 on Country Airplay is Brooks & Dunn, whose 2001 hit “Ain’t Nothing ’Bout You” held at the apex for six weeks.
Among all acts, the longest reign atop Country Airplay, which launched on Jan. 20, 1990, is eight weeks. Two songs share the honor: Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett’s “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” (2003) and Lonestar’s “Amazed” (1999).
“Speechless” also controls Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart for a seventh week. Along with its airplay gain, the song increases by 19 percent to 10.5 million U.S. streams in the week ending Jan. 3 as it returns to its No. 2
peak on Country Streaming Songs (8-2) and spends a ninth week atop Country Digital Song Sales (17,000 sold, down 26 percent).
As Dan + Shay have now topped both Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay for four weeks running, the act is the first to simultaneously spend that much time atop those tallies since Thomas Rhett, who led the lists for a record six consecutive weeks in January and February 2016 with “Die a Happy Man.”
Plus, as “Speechless” paces Hot Country Songs, the pair’s “Tequila” logs a 17th week at its No. 2 peak, setting the mark for the longest run in the runner-up spot. It passes Brett Young’s “In Case You Didn’t Know,” which peaked at
No. 2 for 16 weeks in 2017.Dan + Shay’s concurrently holding the No. 1 and
No. 2 spots on Hot Country Songs for a fourth week is the most among duos and now the second-best sum overall, passing Buck Owens’ three-week double-up in 1964. The pair trails only Luke Bryan, who controlled the top two on the chart at the same time for nine weeks in 2014. The only other acts to claim the top two Hot Country Songs spots in the same frames are Florida Georgia Line (two weeks, 2018), Taylor Swift (one, 2012) and Willie Nelson (two, 1982).
COMBS STILL ‘BEST’ Luke Combs’ “She Got the Best of Me” (River House/Columbia Nashville) has now ranked in the Country Airplay top five for 15 weeks as it dips 4-5 with 34 million audience impressions, up 17 percent.
As mentioned above, “Best” led the list for four weeks starting Oct. 27, 2018; it has resided in the survey’s top five since it jumped 9-5 on Oct. 6. “Best” now stands alone in second place for the longest run in the top five and is a week from tying the record, held by Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road”: 16 weeks, in 2017.
“Best” breaks out of a tie with five other tracks that each spent 14 frames in the Country Airplay top five: Kane Brown’s “Heaven” (2018), Rascal Flatts’ “My Wish” (2006-07), Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” (2004), Faith Hill’s “Breathe” (1999-2000) and Lonestar’s “Amazed” (1999).

MUSIC NOTESHow many mass concerts can one town take? With the calendar barely flipped to 2019, Nashville has a barrage of multi-artist live shows on the docket. A benefit for a foundation named after the late Troy Gentry will round up at least 16 artists on Jan. 9, including Blake Shelton, Justin Moore, Rascal Flatts and Dierks Bentley. A Jan. 12 Willie Nelson tribute pulls together Chris Stapleton, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Eric Church among more than two dozen acts. Bobby Bones’ Million Dollar Show on Jan. 14 lines up nine guests, including Luke Bryan, Jon Pardi, Cole Swindell and Lady Antebellum. An April 30 celebration of contemporary Christian artist Michael W. Smith will draw three dozen performers, including country friends Lee Greenwood, Ricky Skaggs, Wynonna Judd and The Oak Ridge Boys.
Space may not be the final frontier. William Shatner will make his Grand Ole Opry debut on Feb. 15. He’ll share the iconic stage with Alabama guitarist Jeff Cook, who released an album with Shatner, Why Not Me, in 2018. The rest of the night’s lineup is TBD, but it could include Mark Wills, who will become the newest Opry member on Jan. 11. The invitation to join was quite the Christmas gift, extended by Vince Gill on Dec. 21.
Chris Young’s new single — “Raised On Country,” released to country radio via PlayMPE on Jan. 4 — extends a backward-glancing trend among mainstream country vocalists as it references such artists as Merle Haggard, Joe Diffie, George Strait and Hank Williams Jr. Already in circulation is Walker Hayes’ “90’s Country” (No. 58, Country Airplay), which lists 22 titles associated with the likes of Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson. Additionally, Lauren Alaina’s “Ladies in the ’90s” (No. 48, Country Airplay) balances references to country’s Reba McEntire, Shania Twain and Deana Carter with nods to pop females Britney Spears, TLC and Christina Aguilera.
Trisha Yearwood snuck a Frank Sinatra tribute album, Let’s Be Frank, exclusively into Williams Sonoma stores on Dec. 20, but the package goes wide Feb. 15. The celebration is one of seven titles in the most recent wave of announced projects that includes Flatland Cavalry’s cleverly named Homeland Insecurity, due Jan. 18; Denver-based Jeff Cramer’s Northern 45, Jan. 25; Amy McCarley’s Americana release MECO, with guest appearances by Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives, Feb. 8; Robert Ellis’ Texas Piano Man, Feb. 14; and Florida Georgia Line’s Can’t Say I Ain’t Country, Feb. 15.

Russell Dickerson’s sophomore single, “Blue Tacoma,” focused on a very specific territory, as the song followed a couple on a drive up the California coast.
Its successor, “Every Little Thing,” goes all over the map. Lyrically, it details a woman with competing consumption interests: She’s a fan of coffee’s amperage and of red wine’s chill effect. Musically, it relies on an almost whimsical whistle at the outset, but blows into a big, fat sonic blast in the chorus. And stylistically, it incorporates a country-fed banjo jangle alongside a funk-inspired bass and alt-rock guitar solo. In reality, it’s a simple song — not a whole lot of lyrics and big effects from a small number of instruments — but it deftly celebrates the complexities that emerge in any human relationship.
“ This song is 100 percent me,” says Dickerson. “It’s my sound, my energy, my vibe, bragging on my wife lyrically, upbeat, uptempo, a little synth in there, poppy-ness on top of the super-country banjo and country-leaning lyrics. That’s down the middle for me because I love country music, I love pop music, I love rap music — I love it all, and it’s all kind of formed together in this song.”
While it’s 100 percent Dickerson, adding to the song’s complexity is that it’s also 100 percent a reflection of the songwriting triumvirate at the heart of his early success. Parker Welling and Dickerson’s producer, Casey Brown, co-wrote each of Dickerson’s f irst three singles with him — and, oddly enough, in the order of their release. “Yours” was fashioned at Brown’s home in January 2014, while “Blue Tacoma” and “Every Little Thing” came in the months afterward, the latter one emerging at Brown’s office in the suburban-corporate atmosphere of Provident Music Group in Franklin, Tenn.
“He had a little room that had a bunch of windows in it,” notes Welling. “It was a small room, maybe like 10 foot by 10 foot, and he had a piano and his desk in there, so it was pretty small. But we wrote a lot of songs off of Russ’s first record in that room.”
They had a snap-and-clap percussion loop running to establish some sort of tempo when they penned the third single, and Dickerson casually whistled a bouncy lick that caught Brown’s attention. He asked Dickerson to repeat it, and the snippet morphed into “Every Little Thing.” He doubled the hook with a banjo and a slide for texture.
“I played the exact same thing over those whistles, and that became the intro hook,” says Dickerson. “It’s the same as the verse melody, so that’s a huge motif in that song.”
While Dickerson and Brown cobbled those layers together, Welling toyed with words that might work with that foundational melody. “My baby, she’s Alabama/A ‘Dixieland Delight’ ” used a reference to a Country Music Hall of Fame band and one of its signature songs, connecting it with the “easy like Sunday morning” hook from a Commodores song to set up some of the woman’s built-in contradictions.
“We get crazy on a Saturday night,” says Dickerson, referencing another lyric, “but ‘easy like Sunday morning’ is such a perfect inverse to that description of her.”
The three songwriters and their spouses were all friends during their tenure at Nashville’s Belmont University, and pieces of the lyric pointed to quirks in each of their relationships: A “Seattle and Sonoma” couplet played up the
hot coffee/red wine dichotomy in Kailey Dickerson’s tastes, while Natalie Brown’s verbal gaffes led to another image.
“There’s a line in the first verse — ‘When she forgets the punchline, it still gets me every time’ — which is inspired by Casey’s wife, who always says common phrases wrong,” observes Welling. “If it’s like a popular idiom or phrase that people would say, she always gets it wrong, and it’s always hilarious.”
It didn’t have a title when they started, but Dickerson used a semi-stuttered effect to lead them to its branded hook.
“I was singing, ‘Every little, every little,’ and that’s all I had,” he remembers. “I was just kind of mumbling the rest, and we kind of collectively were like, ‘I love every little thing about her love.’ As soon as we discovered that, we just kind of dove into all these specific things.”
W h i l e t h e w h i s t l e / b a n j o / s l i d e combination created a lively sonic intro, the chorus got its own unique sound with one big supporting note — the bass, guitars and a synth all stacked together — that swells and recedes into and out of the beat to create a powerhouse effect.
Dickerson added a nimble, repetitive g u it a r solo t hat prov ides yet a not her earworm to a string of hooks, and they pulled together a dynamic demo that day with Dickerson singing lead, not even bothering to clean up the pop on the “P” sound in that “punchline” lyric.
“Every time we’re comping a vocal, me and Casey, I just listen for personality,” says Dickerson. “I don’t listen for perfection or even perfect notes or perfect pitch. I want anything that gives me a little smirk or gives me a little chill or any personality that comes through. I’ll take that over a perfect vocal any day.”
At least half the vocal from that demo remained when they cut the final version, estimates Dickerson, and that includes that “P” pop. He simplified the guitar solo a hair, paring a repetitive triplet pickup down to just one or two notes. And somewhere along the way, Welling’s publisher at the time — 3 Ring Circus founder-songwriter Jeffrey Steele (“Hell Yeah,” “Raise ’Em Up”) — convinced them to separate the Alabama/Commodore references and slide a new lyric into the first verse.
“Every Little Thing” always seemed like it had potential as a single, and after “Yours” and “Blue Tacoma” both ascended to No. 1 on Country Airplay, crowd reaction cemented those projections.
“When ‘Blue Tacoma’ was out this past year, I got to go out with Russ a bunch on the road to write for the next record,” says Welling. “Watching people respond to ‘Every Little Thing’ almost as strongly as they had been to ‘Yours’ and ‘Blue Tacoma’ made it really clear that was going to be the next single.”
Triple Tigers released it to country radio via PlayMPE on Nov. 14, 2018, and it’s currently No. 47 in its fifth charted week on the Country Airplay list dated Jan. 12.
In the end, the song’s simple appreciation for a complex woman and its ability to distill a battery of influences into a coherent core seems to make a direct connection. The pieces in “Every Little Thing” may come from all over the map, but they fit together in a unified way as Dickerson plays at the edges of country’s commercial box.
“I want to push the boundaries,” he says. “I’m not afraid to do that.”

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 149 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2018, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 109 stations, ranked by total plays.
BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored
station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.
TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.
RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still
gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.
HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.
MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.
MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.
AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.
BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

On Jan. 8, 1944, Billboard published its first version of a country songs chart, with multiple recordings of “Pistol Pack i n’ Ma ma” lead i ng t he t hen-named Most Played Juke Box Folk Records list. The chart was subtitled
“Hillbillies, Spirituals, Cowboy Songs, Etc.” and ranked “the most popular Folk records on automatic phonographs thruout [sic] the nation.”
Three interpretations of the song showe d ato p t he i n au g u r a l t a l ly,
by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters; Al Dexter, the song’s writer; and Don Baxter. “Mama” became a wartime anthem, with many U.S. troops christening their fighter planes, cannons and tanks “Mama.” Notably, a group of female fighter pilots — the Women A i r force S er v ice P i lots — decorated their B-17 bomber after the song. Several other acts also have recorded “Mama,” including Tex Ritter and Frank Sinatra.
Billboard added a cou nt r y song sales survey in 1948 and a disc jockey ranking in 1949 before unveiling the all-encompassing Hot C &W Sides chart in 1958. Top Country Albums p r e m ie r e d i n 196 4 , t h e N iel s en Mu sic- p owere d C ou nt r y A i r play char t lau nched in 1990, and Hot Countr y Songs adopted its current airplay-, streaming- and sales-based methodology in 2012.
