Queen Mary here we come!By Bob riha Jr.PPAGLA President

Being President of PPAGLA offers many surprises and rewards, and sharing this breaking news with you right now is important to me

and your Board of Directors. Did you know that in 2011, the PPAGLA is celebrating our 75th anniversary of our Association along with the 75th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the RMS Queen Mary? It’s true. Really!

Your PPAGLA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that our Annual Awards dinner will be taking place on Saturday, March 19, 2011 inside the Queen’s Salon onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach!

In addition, PPAGLA will be presenting a monthlong photo exhibit — “PPAGLA 75th Anniversary Historical Photo Ex-hibit, Sponsored by Univision” — inside the entire Sun Deck Gallery onboard the Queen Mary for the month of March 2011. This historical photo exhibit will include award-winning images and video taken by our members over the past 75 years. Mem-bers will be notified in upcoming e-JOM Jr. issues, email notifications and at www.ppagla.org with additional details about our Photo Exhibit and Awards Dinner and how they might submit images for consideration. Until then, here’s some details from your Board of Directors we’d like to share with you!

n Our 75th anniversary Annual Awards Dinner will be Saturday, March 19, 2011. The cost (per guest) is $46 per ticket, which includes the $6 parking fee for Queen Mary parking (that I could not negotiate to eliminate). At our dinner, you will have your choice of either: steak, chicken, fish or vegetarian dinner plate along with salad, dessert, coffee, tea for an enjoyable evening together. Bartender stations will also be standing by to serve you and our guests. The ticket cut-off date for the Annual Awards dinner is Feb. 28, 2011. This is the deadline, please honor it.

n For those guests showing up at the door or requests for tickets after the cut-off date, tickets will be $60 per guest and will not include parking, which is $12 upon exit-ing the Queen Mary property.

n Do you want to spend the night onboard the Queen Mary after the Awards Dinner? The Queen Mary is offering PPAGLA overnight rooms at a rather sea-worthy price! The cut-off date for room reservations is Jan. 20, 2011, for our

special, discounted room rates for PPAGLA members and guests. We have 10 rooms available for $75 per room (plus taxes) for PPAGLA members and guests that first call into Queen Mary Reservations. After those 10 rooms are no longer available, additional standard rooms will be at $99 (plus taxes) per night for a standard, outside cabin rooms with double bed. All rooms are dif-ferent in design and decor. Room upgrades and family staterooms may also be avail-able (based upon availability) at discounted prices, if available. Here’s how to reserve your room today:

1. Contact Queen Mary at 562-435-3511 and ask for Reservations

2. Tell Reservations Agent you are with the PPAGLA Group for March 19.

3. Discuss room options or upgrades with agent if interested.

4. Have your credit card ready, since billing is separate from Awards Dinner.

5. First come — first served!!This will be a special evening for us to

reflect on what our Association has accom-plished in the past 75 years as we continue to produce — decade after decade — award-winning, historical images taken by our members.

“It’s not what your Association can do for you, but what you can do for your As-sociation” is a phrase I’d like you to think about for a moment.

Ok, times up.PPAGLA new Board Member elections

will begin in October 2010, with ballots due date back by Dec. 25, 2010. Ballots will arrive in the mail to you shortly. If you’ve ever wanted to make a change to assist our fellow media members and friends, now is the time to become a member of the PPAGLA Board of Directors. Do you know of an individual who would like to represent media photographers and videographers that work throughout Southern California? Talk with them and encourage them to contact us.

Members can contact me or any Board member with names and suggestions —

even their own name — that are interested in becoming a Board Member and to have your name placed on the ballot to serve on the Board of Directors. You’ll be warming a seat that other press photographers have done before you the previous 75 years!

Our Association is only as strong as its members and leadership. Your Board of Directors and I want input and suggestions. Our Board of Directors meet one night a month with meetings lasting about 2 to 3 hours. Work is done behind-the-scenes with updates at each monthly meeting. Everyone contributes wherever they can — as it’s been done by others before us — for the last 75 years. If scheduling and Board meet-ing dates are a problem for you, you’ll let us know and we’ll do whatever it takes to modify the meeting date and time, so every-one has the opportunity to attend.

I’d like to specifically address this for those members who are staff photographers with a steady paycheck and are members. We all know that due to existing eco-nomic conditions, many of our Association members are still without jobs or a steady paycheck. Our Association needs your input, guidance and representation also to move this Association to a higher level. We need individuals to step up to the plate to do something positive for others within our Association.

“I’m just too busy” is a phase that has been over-worked and heard over the years by Board Members soliciting new mem-bers. We need not only the “old-timers” and veterans to guide younger generations, but also younger PPAGLA members — those future photojournalists and videographers who will keep the tradition of our Associa-tion alive for future generations to come. Your Board of Directors needs your leader-ship qualities — we need members that will try to make a positive difference for others. How about you?

Our Association was founded in 1936 by George Watson. Everyone should be proud of the accomplishments by PPAGLA members, Board Members and Presidents over these past 75 years, with many more accomplishments and award-winning im-ages to come in our future.

Sincerely,Bob

A fter 25 years of photographing pitches, Dodger photographer Jon SooHoo took the mound

himself and threw out the first pitch for a game against the San Francisco Giants on Sept. 3.

In his years as the official team photographer, Jon has photographed pre-season games from Vero Beach, Fla. to Glendale, Ariz. Plays have unfolded in front of his lens during countless regular season games, playoff games, and a Dodger victory in the 1988 World Series.

Jon has been a friend to pho-tographers on and off the field, and even when he is on the field shooting game-winning jubilation, he makes an effort to keep out of the sight lines of shooters working on deadline.

Manager Joe Torre presented Jon with a jersey, emblazoned with SooHoo’s name and autographed by several Dodger legends. Tommy Lasorda presented him with a procla-mation, and nearly 100 photographers attended to capture every moment.

Dodger Owner Frank McCourt greeted Jon and his family behind home plate, and the scoreboard con-gratulated Jon on his years of service.

On the mound, SooHoo motioned for the press contingent to make way for his pitch. Torre took position behind the plate, and Jon went into an abbreviated wind up and threw a heater that glanced off of Torres glove and hit the backstop. Embar-rassed, Jon kicked the dirt and smiled. But Torre wouldn’t let it go. The ball

was retrieved, and Jon got a second chance to put it over the plate.

Vin Scully summed it up best from the broadcast booth. “Before the game started we had a lovely moment for a wonderful guy, Jon SooHoo, the Dodgers official photographer, 25 years taking pictures, and you know photographers always take two shots in case the first one doesn’t work out. So after 25 years, SooHoo made a bad first pitch, made a wonderful second pitch and got not only the plaudits from the crowd, but the love from his teammates and everybody in the Dodger family.”

When it comes to working with photographers everyone knows, you have to give them Just One More.
