THIS MONTH’S silver starThis month’s featured Silver Star is Jo Lane. Jo was born on Jan. 17, 1927, to parents Joseph and Josephine Deraymond. Her siblings include Nellie, Philomena and Raymond. Jo (short for Josephine) was born in Easton, Pa., and is from a full Italian home where the first language was Italian. Her family is from Sicily. Jo attended Easton Catholic High School and excelled in learning. She later attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her BS in Home EC and teaching. Jo was the first girl in her generation to attend college. Being the daughter of immigrants, she chose the new path of attending college.

Jo met Jerome Lane, who would become her husband in 1955.They met when Jo was working at the county extension offices and Jerry was home on summer leave from law school. Together they raised a family of four children: Mary Jo, Patty, Jerry and Karen. They moved to Cincinnati in 1963, and Jo continued teaching until the first child came along. Jo then volunteered at church and the kids’ schools. Jo and her husband enjoyed doing many things together such as renovating their daughter’s farmhouse. They also enjoyed traveling to places such as: Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, etc.

Jo enjoys spending time with family. She has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She finds strength in her faith and enjoys attending Mass regularly. She enjoys activities such as basket weaving, trivia, and music. We are fortunate to have her with us.

KEEP ACTIVE with these activities

• Carry on a daily routine as much as possible.

• Stay connected with family and friends by telephone, writing them a letter or email, or by using social media.

• Keep physically active as much as you can. Take advantage of the limited walks when possible, get up and walk around your apartment, and do simple seated stretches.

• Use this time as an opportunity: Read that book you’ve been wanting to get to, work on your favorite crafting project or hobby, take on a puzzle (Try the ones here in the newsletter!), start a journal, or learn something new.

• Unleash your inner artist with coloring pages or take up drawing or sketching.

• Organize something you’ve put off, such as that pile of papers, a drawer or shelf.

• Listen to your favorite music.

• If it’s possible, use your TV’s streaming service to catch up on some classic movies or one of those popular TV shows everyone’s talking about.

• Use your tablet or computer and research some topics you’ve always been interested in, learn some phrases in a foreign language, watch a YouTube tutorial or TED talk, or just laugh at some animal videos!

• Above all, maintain a positive attitude. You have likely coped with difficult situations before, and be reassured that you will cope with this current situation as well.

EVENT RECAP februaryFebruary was a busy party month. We had so much fun making our own masks.

THIS MONTH’S heart heroHOSPITALITY, EXCELLENCE, APPRECIATION, RESPECT, TEAMWORK

RACHEL WOHLFROM was born in Cincinnati Ohio, 1983. One of three children, she has a 28-year-old sister and an 18-year-old brother. Her best childhood memory is of her trips to Gatlinburg, Tenn., to her grandparents’ chalet, two to three times a year. She occasionally traveled in her teens and went as far as London and Paris when she was just 16 years old. One of her favorite things to do growing up was reading, and furthermore, reading cookbooks! Through this habit, she became a self-taught baker. She then attended Sullivan University in Louisville, Ky., and received her Associates in Science for the Culinary Arts, spurring on her proudest accomplishment in life so far — her career.

If you haven’t guessed by now, Rachel works in The Barrington Kitchen cooking up all kinds of delicious food. Personally though, if she had to eat one meal every day for the rest of her life, it would be “something with cheese.” It should come as no surprise then, that the one thing in her life she couldn’t live without is cheese. Rachel would describe The Barrington as a place of “community, care, and compassion.” Her favorite aspect is “all the cooks I work with and Chef Tyler.” If she could switch jobs with anyone at The Barrington, she would choose Pat, the Maintenance Manager! However, if she could have any job in the world for just one day, would she choose another career? “None,” she tells us, “I’ve always wanted to work in kitchens.”

When she is not working, Rachel enjoys crafting, arcades, and swimming in the summertime. Three traits that Rachel believes define her include her organization, creativity and dependable nature. She is recently married (Dec. 30, 2019), and has a 13-year-old daughter and two stepchildren. She draws her influence from her husband, family, and also confident, empowering women. Additionally, when it comes to pursuing her goals, one of her favorite movies is “Field of Dreams” in which she admires the speech delivered by James Earl Jones, who encourages protagonist Ray to fight for his dreams. So far, the greatest challenge Rachel has had to overcome in her life is being independent, but one of her top life highlights has been living on her own! Meeting her husband is also in her top highlights. Her best adult memory is twofold; her wedding day and the day of her daughter’s birth.

If Rachel could tell herself anything at age 13, she would advise that “It gets better” and “Fight for your mental health.” Rachel defines success as “contentedness and happiness” and she is happiest when she is with her family, cooking, or napping. In five years, Rachel sees herself “owning a home with my husband and working as an executive chef somewhere.” We are thrilled to have a self-starter such as Rachel at The Barrington with us and we are certain she will obtain everything she sets her heart on!
