We had a pretty darn good turn out for theInDoor FlyIn again this year, with a numberof guests. Even though the night outside wasfrigid, we enjoyed great food and a neatchance to fly our indoor toys!

FAA Registration is back! As of the middle of December, the FAArenewed the requirement that we registerwith them if we fly planes or drones thatweigh over a half pound, which includesalmost all our airplanes and most of ourdrones except for tiny ones. Here is theannouncement from the AMA website:

On December 12, 2017 new legislationwas signed into law that will reverse theearlier court ruling in the John Taylor casewhich restored the FAA's UAS registrationrequirement, including us, members of theAMA.

AMA believes that registration makessense at some level, but has pushed for amore reasonable threshold. While we addressthese issues, members will be legallyrequired to comply with the FAAregistration requirement.

Q: If I am already registered, do I have toregister again?

A: No, you will not have to re-registeragain since this bill simply reverses the JohnTyler case. We will share more as detailsemerge.

Q: Do I need to register again if I requesteda refund and asked to be removed from theregistration list?

A: You will need to re-register only if youreceived FAA confirmation that your requestto be removed from the database washonored.

Q: I did not request a refund/removal fromregistration database, will my registrationnumber and expiration date stay the same?

A: Yes, your registration number andexpiration date will remain the same unlessyou requested that the FAA remove yourinformation from the database, andrececeived confirmation of this removal.

Become a Leader Member Any Adult AMA member whodemonstrates above average interest and/orparticipation in AMA matters, and whoqualifies in accordance with AMA ExecutiveCouncil approval requirements can become aLeader Member (LM)

There are five catagories in the LMprogram: Education Support,Administrative, Scientific, and Industrial.The duties of an LM vary within thesecategories. Although it is the responsibilityof every LM to represent and promote AMAand the sport of aeromodeling, LM's withinthe catagories of Education Support, FlightSupport have specific duties andresponsibilities, including public outreach,assisting AMA clubs, member support,membership development, educationaloutreach, plus other duties as defined by theLM program.

LM's work with their respective districtvice president (VP's) and associate vicepresidents (AVP's) to promote and supportAMA and model aviation. Demographicsand geography play a role in the frequencyof contact, responsibilities, and areas thatLM's work within. Frequent communicationwith the respective VP's and or AVP's isvital in serving as an effective LM. LM'salso have the right to vote on AMA bylawchanges.
