McKenzie’s Mini progress. By James McKenzieGazillions of dollars worth of new mini parts accumulated over the last three years. Plus a few parts that have been derusted and repainted. And the new shift knob I made. Below is prep for painting next week!

Recent body work and prep for painting has started at A+ Collision (Mark Canaday’s shop) in Topeka.

So you are thinking about a mini. By the time I finish this one I might know what I am doing! Lots of parts spread out on the floor. Got more hanging downstairs with the paint drying. Got the swing arms to do next, the last big rusty parts. Its like Christmas in the garage with all the parts out there. When I get done with my mini I will know every part on the car, I think.

Rat Patrol Racing. From Harry Price - Wichita /TopekaRat Patrol, A Brief History and Tentative Schedule for 2014. Working title, Harry Shamelessly Trolls for Paying Drivers.

Many of you know one or more of us. Mark Canady and I are co-owners of Rat Patrol. Bill Fisher is our Crew Chief and Staff Photographer. Rat Patrol is a rusty TR7 with Miata 1600cc motor and five speed. Somewhere the fuel injection got lost, so Mark engineered twin SUs from an old TR3. Yeah, it works! Many square feet of galvanized sheet metal and miles of welding wire later, the worst of the rust was patched.

Our first two race weekends were marred w/ large holes in the engine block. Last Sept we overcame the issue with a rev limiter and oil cooler. We completed a 12 hour race Sat and a 6 hour race Sunday, finishing mid pack. We actually qualified for the regional run-offs in the Sat race! Heady stuff after scattering motors the first two times out.

We are trying to schedule three races this year. Here is what we are considering. Committed to Topeka in Sept and Hallett in Oct.

    ChumpCar May 3 & 4 Hastings NEB - 12 hr/6 hrChumpCar Sept 27 & 28 Topeka, KS - 10 hr/6 hrWorld Racing League Oct 18 & 19 Hallett, OK - 8hr/8hrThere are presently no 24 Hours of LeMons races reasonably close.

Mark and Bill have been busy making the car faster and safer. Another 60 lbs. of weight reduction. A halon fire suppression system. Bigger tires and wheels. I'm milking a recent surgery as an excuse for not helping, don't tell Bill and Mark!

So what does Rat Patrol need besides bigger tires/wheels/less weight/more safety? Additional drivers. We need at least one or two additional drivers for each race. Our ideal driver pool is four or five. This maximizes each driver's seat time. Just over 3 to 4 hours on an 18 hour race weekend. We need at least one or two additional drivers for each race.

For this dubious privilege, we ask between $700 to $800 per race weekend, depends on how many drivers we have. We don't make any money, but it does help cover the cost of tires (usually one set per weekend completely worn out), fuel (usually well over 100 gallon per weekend), entry fee, oil, and miscellaneous expenses. Besides this extravagant waste of money, what else do you need? A helmet (see the ChumpCar website to determine what qualifies). Otherwise, we can loan you a firesuit and nomex socks. Assuming they fit, we are willing to share our gloves and shoes. If your hands 'n feet are particularly large/tiny - check with us about sizes available.

Also, you eat good grilled food at least once a day. We pack a grill, and cook at the track.

Is it cheap? No. Is it fun? Way too much fun to be legal much longer. Unless you think dodging the Mustang that spun in front of you, or luring a big Plymouth way too deep into the hairpin and watching it spin out in the rearview isn't any fun. But you might like stalking a slower driver/car for multiple laps until you finally pass the begger and make it stick!

So if you've only fantasized about driving a race car, now is the time to check it off your bucket list. Just be careful, do it once and you could end up co-owning a Chumpcar. Don't ask how I know.

If you think this kind of stupidity is your cup of tea, call one of us.(Fisher says it’s hours of fun of a lifetime denied.)

MGB in Alan Miller’s Garage. By Charles Linn

Here are a couple views of the 79 MGB that Alan has talked about at the meetings which you might want for the newsletter, Bill.

It is a great car. Though it only has 16,000 miles on it, the engine is highly modified--Alan has the details. It really looks great, and Alan has it running like a top.

    Club Minutes by Susan McKenzie;

LAWRENCE ALL BRITISH CAR CLUB MEETING OF MARCH 4, 2014

    HELD AT CONROY’S PUB

There were 22 in attendance for this meeting.

James began the meeting by reporting that Onley, England had won the 65th annual pancake race against Liberal, Kansas earlier in the day.

Thanks to Bill for the newsletter. Magazines for the taking were available, as were several puzzles that Gordon brought in to give away.

A Boot Sale will be held at A+ Collision in Topeka, Mark Canady’s garage, on March 15th from 10 – 2. The Topeka British Car Club will be there as well. Our club will have one in Lawrence again in September or October.

Maggie distributed information about an exhibit at the Kansas Historical Museum in Kansas City. It’s an exact replica of King Tut’s tomb, and will be displayed from April until September in Kansas Ctiy.

Gary reported that he has raced the Arnold Special! It performed very well but he is still learning the car. He will be racing April 11-12 in Howlett, Oklahoma.

The race held each year in Garnett was brought up and what a good thing that would be to have our club go to that.

Alan indicated that he has two cars at his place that are on consignment. One is from the Kansas City area and is a ’62 titled in ’63 MGB. It’s red with black interior, with seats out of a Pantara. It has wire wheels a later model engine, and a hard top. The other car is a ’79 MGB with 16,000 miles. It’s midnight blue with a gray interior. It has a single weber carb.

Alan displayed the signs he has had made from a Triumph Motorcycle emblem on the engine. (I think that’s all correct.) The signs are from key-chain size up to huge for garage art.

James reported he continues with his MINI project and is looking for some parts yet. He is also working on Mark Canaday’s MINI, so they soon will both be up and running!

    Dues are due. $20.00

Gary reported that he has a 1949 or 1950 GMC cab over truck for sale. It has a flat bed with railings.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Susan McKenzie
