16 SEPTEMBER 2015 BC FLOOR COVERING ASSOCIATION www.bcfca.com

The more things change over the years, them more they stay the same. The color covering industry is much like that. Flooring types,

styles, people and businesses come and go, but the issues facing our industry will always re-main. We at the BCFCA are very optimistic. We are constantly striving to improve and foster all phases of our industry both provincially and

nationally. We have the staff, the programs and a Board of Directors dedicated to train, service, educate and promote our members.

Jack Harrison, a three term past president, and very good friend of the BCFCA wrote this President’s Message when he was 39 years old, in May 1986:

Here’s a partial listing of some of the reasons we feel that our industry and association have a very positive future:• Your BCFCA now owns and operates the National Floor Covering

Association (NFCA). This National Association operated for many years as a voice of our industry for all of Canada. It will soon be in full operation out of the BCFCA offices. We already have the Alberta Floor Covering Association and numbers flooring stores as members. This will open many new doors for all of us and help us share knowledge and ideas from other markets. More to follow.

Under the ownership of the BCFCA, the Master Floor Covering Standards Institute was created. Chris Maskell is the Technical Coordinator and will focus on architects, owners, governments, school boards and health boards with a remarkable and well accepted inspection program for flooring installations as they are being started right through to their completion. Check with Chris Maskell at 604-817-2740 or [email protected].

• Check out the new BCFCA website: www.bcfca.com. Lots of good staff for anyone in flooring or consumers looking for a store or information.

• The famous NFCA Floor Covering Manual which is supplied to all BCFCA members is now online. The online version is available to all architectural/design firms free of charge. Check with Chris Maskell for further information at 604-817-2740.

• The BCFCA is now an official member of the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). What a great way to see what is going on in the flooring world.

• In a follow up to our very successful Flooring Expo and Installer Convention last October in Langley, we are pleased to present the second Expo-Convention in Kelowna in October at the Capri Hotel. Call Denise at our office: 604-881-4944 for details. You’ll see many new flooring products and attend installation clinics.

• Check out the many training and professional development programs we offer. Judith McLean, Coordinator for Education & Training (604-881-4944), will send you a list of all we have to offer.

• Hardwood Flooring Seminar Wednesday, September 23, 2015: “Everything you need to know to understand and successfully sell hardwood flooring.” Instructor Scoot cooper brings 24 years of experience in the hardwood flooring industry. Call the BCFCA office at 604-881-4944 for details. v

Our industry continues to go through trying times. Although business has been better in the last half of 1985 and the beginning of 1986, markups appear to be low in general and

competition is fierce in the manufacturing, wholesale, contract and retail trade.

We notice that the consumer is becoming increasingly demanding through their increased office calls either registering complaints or asking advice, and in the next few years the forms with the most professional business approach, the most practical knowledge and th finest workmanship will be the firms that gain consumer confidence and thrive.

To assist salespeople in meeting these increased demands, we hope to complete and offer an upgrading course for the retail salespeople throughout our industry in the near future.

We also plan to increase our membership, especially in the retail end, in the Lower Mainland and the Southern Interior, and look into Central and Northern BC so then we are truly the voice of the industry province wide.

I thank you for the confidence you have demonstrate by giving me the opportunity to be your President for this term and look forward to working with our new Board of Directors on your behalf.

May 1986 be you best year ever, J.E. Harrison

BCFCA President’s Message

When it comes to managing your jobsite, how do you determine the best time to move from the traditional pen and paper

style of work to a digital platform that offers features in project and site management, and saves your bottom line at the same time?

For many owners in the flooring industry, this question is loaded with decisions that must be made such as:

■ "Will our employees adopt it?"

■ " Will it save me money or advance my business?"

■ " What is the point of changing when the current processes have worked for decades?"

It’s simple: Shifting from paper to an elec-tronic application makes it easier for you and your workforce to become mobile.

Imagine a work day where you could moni-tor the time your staff are arriving and leaving with a “check in/check out” digital time card feature, have a live chat with onsite staff at var-ious jobsites, upload and share files, place per-sonal orders directly to your vendors, along-side other administrative tasks, all from your mobile device. Within minutes, you are able to complete multiple tasks while being mobile.

In business, the truth is, we innovate or we die. These days, the death is much faster due to quickly changing economic conditions and the speed with which business decisions are made.

The biggest hurdle may be the pushback from some staff, specifically the more mature

generation of workers who were not born with a smartphone in their hand. The transforma-tion to a digital workforce needs to be well-managed in order to transition smoothly.

You may be asked questions like:

■ “Why are we doing this?”

■ “Why fix what isn’t broken?”

There are two simple ways to respond to these questions:

■ “ We are striving for excellence and this is what we need to do to stay relevant and competitive.”

■ “ Our business requires an efficient and modern process that can provide an opportunity to attract new work, which benefits all employees.”

Most of your staff will make the connec-tion that greater company success equals job security, quality projects, and more greater work experience.

While adopting our system, our clients report on savings of 3-5% annually in admin-istrative and time costs. As your software vendor, we will become your long-term part-ner and walk you through the process. Take the leap and see how we can help to trans-form your business operations.

For more info contact Sitemax Systems directly at 1-888-885-4036 or [email protected] or www.sitemaxsystems.com v

IF YOU DON'T MONITOR IT, YOU CAN'T MANAGE IT

HERE ARE A FEW FEATURES AND BENEFITS THAT COME WITH ADOPTING THE DIGITAL SYSTEM: The opportunity to capture daily photos of the jobsite which allows you to catch problems before they happen.

Real time digital time cards will eliminate frequent miscalculations in data entry, often caused by the delay in activity and reporting. Knowing real-time statistics is a significant bonus to your company.

Digital safety information delivery which cuts out the expensive cost of printing and transportation of forms and manuals. This feature allows you and your staff to have safety information handy at all times.

Sharing of real-time information to clients. The client-experience piece is loaded with benefits, and it can help tip the scales in your favour. Clients love transparency, as it increases the trust factor and comfort level while reducing risk in their decision of who to work with.

“With SiteMAX I can can be away from all my projects and still see what is going on in real-time. I have been searching for a product like this for three years, and have now found it.”

– Kevin Swenson, Principal of System One Floor Solutions Inc

2015 BCFCA BREAKFASTW

e held our 3rd Annual Members Appreciation Breakfast and Classic Car Show on July 9th joining the BSIA with whom we share office space. Special thanks to the BCFCA board of directors

who donned their aprons and cooked up eggs, sausages and pancakes, complete with whipping cream and blueberries. Member attendance is growing every year as the word gets out, as is the number of members who display their classic cars in our parking area. As breakfast was being served members mingled and enjoyed the beautiful sunny morning and background music.

Come on out next year and enjoy a hearty breakfast. It’s great way to meet fellow members and start your day. You could even bring a customer as everyone is welcome! v

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM FOR FLOORING "VERY BENEFICIAL"

The NFCA (National Floor Covering Association) Quality Assurance Program was specified into the HOpe Centre Lions Gate

Hospital project and helped the construction teams involved understand and obtain the site conditions necessary to install the floor coverings properly and according to spec.

The usual challenges were present, subfloor preparation, moisture testing, achieving acceptable site conditions and

a pressing construction schedule. Timing became a significant issue as the schedule did not anticipate concrete subfloor dry times and the time to take proper moisture tests. Without the main heat on in the building, the slab temperature was too cold, ambient relative humidity and temperature were not

acceptable and so installation was delayed until correct conditions were achieved. The result, the floor coverings were installed properly with warranties intact.

Wendy Peare of Capital Projects said that she found the Quality Assurance Program inspection service 'very beneficial' during the construction of the HOpe Centre Hospital in North Vancouver and would recommend the service for future projects.

Mystery shopping involves sending an anonymous customer into your location who will then report back with the facts

and details of their experience.Typical areas of focus would include things

such as: expediency of service, attitude, adherence to policies and standards, product quality, knowledge, selling skills, location condition, and comparison to competitors.

The BCFCA partners with Spot Check Services (SCS) to mystery shop its’ retail members in BC annually as a benefit of mem-bership. See how you and your company can benefit from the shop.

SCS is an international consulting com-pany that has provided customer experience solutions to companies large and small since 1998, based out of Regina Saskatchewan.

The purpose of MYSTERY SHOPPING is to: • Provide managers with information

from the perspective of their custom-ers that they may not otherwise receive so they can take action, capitalizing on their strengths and identifying and cor-recting areas of concern.

• Raise awareness of employees about the importance of providing exceptional customer service.

• Encourage a more consistent level of customer service. Because shoppers are anonymous, employees never know when they are being shopped and learn to treat each customer as though they are the mystery shopper.

• Provide ongoing data to be used to track trends, set benchmarks, and evaluate the effectiveness of training initiatives.

• Ensuring everyone from front-line employees to management is involved in the delivery of outstanding customer service and is upholding company stan-dards, policies, and procedures.

What are the benefits of MYSTERY SHOPPING? MYSTERY SHOPPING programs WILL… • Increase your customer service levels by

a minimum of 5-10%.• Increase revenue and profits. • Increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. • Decrease your advertising and marketing

expenses.

What do I do with the MYSTERY SHOPPING reports? • Post the results where everyone can see

them. • Use the information as a coaching

opportunity in staff meetings.• Develop a comprehensive training pro-

gram or use in your current training sessions.

• Incorporate into rewards and recogni-tion programs.

• Utilize the results as part of employee performance evaluations.

• Set benchmarks with personal acknowl-edgement for reaching goals.

• Use the real-time data reporting tools provided with your program to moni-tor the effectiveness of training and coaching.

Mystery shopping programs have a lot of moving parts. You will find that proper pro-cesses and proper management can provide incredible information to help you better

manage your business. However, it helps to have an experienced professional at the helm to ensure the program meets and continues to meet the needs of your business and that you don’t get sidetracked by the daily issues that come from running the program.

You will be able to more effectively con-centrate on the data and results the program provides you with.

You spend a lot of money getting custom-ers in the door. Keeping them inside and keeping them coming back has a massive impact on your bottom line.

Increase ROI of your Advertising

Increase Word of Mouth Business

Increase Productivity and Sales

Increase Quality of Service

Increase your Repeat Business

Let us know how this service works for you. We’d be happy to come and meet with you to discuss the results of your shop or to customize your shop.

The BC Floor Covering Association has been invited to play Slo-Pitch in the BSIA/BCFCA’s Annual Tournament for the last

couple of years. This year Maxwell Floors Ltd. registered and played in the 2 day event held Friday, August 14th and Saturday, August 15th, together with 10 other teams.

The weather threatened thunderstorms on Friday, but it turned out to be a perfect couple of days for a ball tournament for participants and their supporters.

There was a full schedule of games, skills competitions, which included great prizes, of course the delicious BBQ lunch, and a great time for a gathering of family, friends and co-workers.

Thanks for coming out Maxwell Floors Ltd., and on Maxwell's, behalf we challenge other members of the BCFCA to put together teams for next years’ tournament.

It’s a great weekend and you’ll be glad you joined. v
