Welcome to St. Joseph Catholic Community!
I recently read a column about a woman who was generous to her niece on her wedding day
and received no thank you for her gifts. I don’t think it is uncommon for people to neglect words
of gratitude. Saying “thank you” ought to come naturally when we reflect
on our blessings, but the fact is many folks fail to express gratitude.
Despite the state of affairs in our church, country and in our world, and
despite the unrest that so many people feel right now, I am grateful for
my faith and for the hope I carry in my heart for St. Joseph Parish and
the church in this Archdiocese.
One of the reasons I am hopeful for the church right now is that our
Archbishop Hebda has called a special Synod for the purpose of listening
to what people in the parishes have to offer for our future. Through
several listening sessions being held at different times and
places, people are invited to speak their mind on what they
believe is working and what is not working in their local church.
I am trusting the Holy Spirit to lead us in these two years of
discernment and prayer.
Yes, I am grateful for our wounded but beautiful church. Thank
you for becoming a part of this great adventure. May you find at
St. Joseph a community of hope, peace, and joy.
Fr. Terry Rassmussen

Music Ministry
The St. Joseph Liturgical Choir
This choir, made up of adults of all ages, sings twice per month at 4:30pm Masses on Saturdays and 10am Masses
on Sundays. They also sing for Christmas, Easter and other feast days throughout the year. Rehearsals are held weekly
on Wednesday evenings from 7pm - 8:30pm in the main sanctuary at the Parish Center. No experience is necessary;
music reading ability is a plus, but not required. A variety of musical styles is sung.
The LifeLine Band
The style of music at our 6pm liturgy is contemporary, and is open to all parish youth and adults. The LifeLine Band,
which includes electric guitar, drums, electric bass, and vocals, ministers at the 6pm Mass and rehearses before the
Mass at 4:45pm on Sunday afternoon.
The Contemporary Small Ensemble (CSE)
This small ensemble is made up of treble and bass singers, and accompanist. This group is available on a
by-audition-only basis, and is particularly in need of a strong male singer at this time. Please contact Mark Streeter
at 763.545.6181 for more information and to schedule an audition.
The Carpenters
This ensemble is made up of experienced instrumentalists and singers with music-reading skills. The main function
of the group is to support Assembly singing, while embellishing it with harmony and expanded accompaniment,
although some special music is prepared as well.
Soundboard Ministry
Part of the Music Ministry, these ministers assist the Music Ministers in setting up the sound equipment and operate
the soundboard during Mass.
Children’s Christmas Choir
Kids in grades 2-6 sing for the earliest Christmas Eve Mass. Rehearsals are held weekly, starting in November.
Cantor Ministry
Lead the Responsorial Psalm, hymns, songs and service music. This position is by audition only and requires a high
level of musical skill.
Music Ministry Staff Contact: Mary Bur, Director of Music & Liturgy
Liturgy is a communal worship of God. The Mass is a special liturgical celebration where all God's people gather,
not only to give praise and worship, but to offer themselves in the sacrifice of Christ's Body. To accomplish this,
many people are needed to serve at Mass.
There are many opportunities to be involved in the musical proclamation of the Word and sung prayer at
St. Joseph’s. Below is a listing and description of each of our ensembles.
6
Projector Ministry
Our Parish Center Masses utilize projection technology to support assembly participation at liturgies. Projectionists
turn on equipment and "point and click" the computer mouse and follow a guide to all songs and prayers at 4:30pm
Saturday liturgy, and 10am and 6pm Sunday liturgies. This simple but crucial task is particularly good for families,
whose members can share the commitment when needed, and can sit together during Mass!
Lector Ministry (Adult)
Ministers of the Word serve approximately once every other month at Masses. They proclaim the scripture readings
of the day, lead the Prayers of the Faithful and read the announcements at the end of Mass. Training is required and
is held as needed for new lectors.
Lector Ministry (Youth) Youth Ministers of the Word serve at the 6 pm Sunday Masses. They proclaim the scripture readings of the day,
perform short skits, lead the Prayers of the Faithful and read the announcements at the end of Mass. The assigned
3-4 youth lectors rehearse with a coach the hour before Mass begins.
Eucharistic Ministry Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist distribute Holy Communion, the most important part of the Mass.
Commitment is once per month on teams assigned to Masses at both churches. Ministers must be confirmed
Catholics. Training is provided.
Art, Environment, and Plant Care
Participate in decorating the sanctuaries for liturgical seasons, including Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost,
etc. Plant Care ministers take turns watering, fertilizing and caring for green plants and altar flowers on a rotating
basis.
Mass Coordinator
Set up the altar, lock and unlock doors, facilitate the collections, organize Eucharistic ministers for distribution of
Communion and other tasks required for Masses.
Mass Hospitality
Volunteers help serve and clean up after fellowship and conversation following the 10am Parish Center Mass
(weekend after Labor Day through the weekend prior to Memorial Day).
Project "Busy Bags"
“Busy Bags” containing coloring sheets, crayons, reading material, etc. are available to assist families with small
children engage in faith-based activities during Mass. Volunteers clean and restock the bags each week.
Liturgical Ministries Liturgical Ministries Staff Contact: Mary Bur, Director of Music & Liturgy
While recognizing that all people take part in the liturgy, Liturgical Ministers serve in a particular way to plan,
organize and implement a vibrant, dynamic and prayerful liturgical service. The Liturgical Ministry strives to fulfill
the Second Vatican Council's mandate to foster the full, active and conscious participation of the faithful at Mass.
Below are listed various opportunities for people to minister in the Liturgical department. Some Ministers serve on
a weekly basis, some once a month and others serve "as needed."

Sacramental Preparation
Baptism
Preparation helps the parents understand the meaning of the sacrament and the ritual. Classes are held every three
months. Participants attend one class.
First Reconciliation
Our preparation classes help parents and children understand the healing power of this sacrament. Parents attend
two formation sessions alone and two with their child, typically during the Lenten season. Reconciliation is celebrated
during the fourth preparation session.
First Eucharist
Our preparation classes help parents and children understand the mystery of this sacrament as well as prepare the
children to receive their first Communion. Each participant and their parents attend four classes in January.
The sacrament is celebrated in the spring.
Confirmation
Confirmation preparation is a two-year program for high school students, generally beginning in 9th grade. Those
desiring to receive Confirmation are asked to attend On the Rock, our high school youth ministry program, for two
years as a way to grow in their discipleship before receiving the sacrament. Youth also attend a weekend retreat
and a four-week course offered in the spring of their second year that focuses specifically on Confirmation. We
encourage participation in parish service events as well.
Contact: Larry Thomas, Director of Youth Ministry and Confirmation
Marriage
Using the PREPARE program, engaged couples discover their strengths and growth areas over six sessions to prepare
for their upcoming wedding. Marriage preparation also includes Marriage Mentoring to help equip couples for a
happy, healthy marriage by teaching them vital communication and conflict resolution skills, and reflecting on real
life experiences.
Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA)
The process in which spirituality, beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith are presented to those who are
considering joining the Catholic Church. The RCIA process begins in September.
Sacramental Preparation Staff Contact: Cole Epping, Director of Children & Adult Faith Formation, unless otherwise noted
St. Joseph Catholic Community takes great care in preparing people to receive the sacraments in an engaging and
age appropriate manner. We love walking with you on your faith journey.

Children’s Catechesis
Children’s catechesis helps age 3 through grade 5 elementary school children begin their formation in the beliefs and
practices of the Catholic Church. Preschool classes and elementary classes alternate weekends throughout the school
year, providing each age group 15 sessions. Classes meet from 10-11:15am. Registration is held from May to August.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
When the preschool classes meet on Sunday, we continue to form our elementary students by providing Children's
Liturgy of the Word during Mas at the Parish Center during the 10am Mass. Children's Liturgy of the Word presents
the readings of the day to the children in an age-appropriate way. Participants do not need to register to attend this
program and are invited to the Children's Liturgy of the Word procession during Mass.
Family Catechesis
This takes place at home on the alternating weeks that children are not in classes. Instructions are sent home with the
preschoolers to provide ideas to work on during at home with family. Children in grades 1-5 have We Respond in
Faith pages, as well as their home sessions, to do during Family Time.
Christmas Pageant
A St. Joseph tradition for over 30 years! Elementary students perform a Christmas Pageant with 5th grade students
taking on the lead roles. Come and enjoy this wonderful tradition!
Vacation Bible School
For one week each June, youth of all ages and adult leaders learn about God’s love through games, song and
activities. Preschool through grade 5 attend with older youth serving as leaders. Themes vary from year-to-year.
There is a social outreach project during the week and a closing celebration Mass at the Parish Center on Friday that
all are welcome to attend. Registration for this fun-filled week occurs in the spring.
Faith Formation For the whole community
Preschool and Elementary School Catechesis Staff Contact: Cole Epping, Director of Children & Adult Faith Formation
Faith Formation is the process of transmitting the Gospel message, the good news of Jesus, as the Christian
community has received it, understands it, celebrates it, lives it and communicates it. It is a ministry of teaching and
forming. We form disciples so they may be closer to Christ and have a “living, conscious and active faith.”
Middle School Youth Ministry Staff Contact: Larry Thomas, Director of Youth Ministry
Middle School Youth Ministry at St. Joseph helps teens form lasting and fruitful relationships with Christ and the
Church. Our goal is to respond to young people wherever they are on their journey of faith.
IN TOUCH – Middle School Faith Formation Program
The Core Team and the Director of Youth Ministry facilitate all Sunday evening sessions of our middle school
program, IN TOUCH. Eighth grade peer ministers begin serving in their ministry by helping to facilitate small group
discussion. Each IN TOUCH session is designed to educate our youth about our Catholic faith. Each session includes
time focused on the topic for the evening as well as time for activities and discussion. IN TOUCH sessions are from
7:15-8:45pm and are held throughout the year, including summertime!
Middle School Core Team
This is a group of adults and eighth grade youth recruited to consult and advise the Director of Youth Ministry and
to facilitate sessions with middle school youth on Sunday evenings from September through May.
9
Youth Ministry Events
Throughout the school year, several annual events are offered for the purpose of getting youth together to build community,
to serve, to get to know Christ and to have fun together. The events include the Fall Festival, Sleep-out for Homelessness,
Parent’s Night Out, Liturgical Ministry Opportunities, Super Service Saturday, and the MAYHEM Ultimate Lock-In. Most of
our events are open to both middle and high school youth.
Retreats
There are four retreats offered each year: 1) The Mystery Retreat which uses a secular theme and participants unveil the
spiritual themes associated to that theme during the weekend. This December retreat is open to all youth grades 6-12. It is
directed by the middle and high school youth directors but facilitated by middle and high school peer ministers, off-site.
2) The 10th grade Confirmation Retreat, led by the high school Core Team, usually on Super Bowl weekend. 3) The 9th grade
Confirmation Retreat led by NET Ministries, typically in April. 4) Middle School Youth Retreat, typically in spring, facilitated
by the Peer Ministry Team as a fun on-site retreat.
Peer Ministry Team
The Peer Ministry Team is a group of youth, grades 8-12 who either have been recruited or volunteered to take a leadership
role in youth ministry programming. The 8th graders serve on the Middle School Core Team and the high school members
serve on the High School Core Team. They are also encouraged to lead retreats and to take other leadership roles as needs
arise. The Peer Ministry Team has a monthly meeting during which time is dedicated to group building and skill building.
Mission Trips
These six-day opportunities allow youth to get away from the busyness of everyday life and focus on faith. The week includes
prayer, service in the host community, and community building. There is both a middle school and a high school mission trip.
National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC)
This is a biennial trip for high school peer ministers to NCYC where they receive training, formation and have fun with about
25,000 other Catholic teens. Visit www.ncyc.info/ for more information.
Faith Formation For the whole community
High School Youth Ministry Staff Contact: Brennan Palony, Coordinator of High School Youth Ministry
In high school youth ministry at St. Joseph, we strive to connect faith to what teens are experiencing in their lives. We
do this by offering many different ways for them to experience Church. Our adults and peer ministers build the rela-
tionships to make this connection. We are so blessed to be able to minister in this vibrant community. Join us!
On the Rock (OTR)- High School Faith Formation Program
This weekly program runs year-round to help prepare young people for living discipleship by addressing their spiritual
needs. We base our sessions on the weekly readings and encourage our youth to attend our 6pm Youth Mass, which is
before our meeting time of 7:15-8:45pm. OTR is for all high school youth, even those post Confirmation. Our Core Team
and peer ministers help design and facilitate our sessions. OTR serves as the majority of our Confirmation preparation. See
Confirmation in the Sacramental Preparation section for more information.
Core Team
The Core Team is a group of adults and peer ministers who plan, design and facilitate all On the Rock sessions with the aid
of the director of high school youth ministry. This is broken up into four groups, each of which leads five sessions during
the school year. We love adding new people to the Core Team.
Youth Ministry Events and Peer Ministry Staff Contacts: Larry Thomas, Director of Youth Ministry
Brennan Palony, Coordinator of High School Youth Ministry
The easiest way to build community is to attend our youth ministry events. These events help provide faith experiences
away from distractions. Youth really get to know one another and Christ. Try one out!

Archdiocesan Requirements for Volunteers Working with Children Staff Contact: Larry Thomas, Safe Environment Coordinator
The Archdiocese requires all adult volunteers who work with children and all employees to attend a 3 hour live
training session called Protecting God’s Children. In addition, each volunteer is required to complete a background
check, complete the Code of Conduct Training, sign a Code of Conduct and complete the training for Reporting
Suspected Child Abuse. The trainings and background check are to be completed before a volunteer or employee is
allowed to begin their ministerial duties.
The Archdiocese also requires a Personal Safety Lesson to be taught to all children/youth registered in our programs.
Anyone who fails to attend the scheduled Personal Safety Lesson is required to attend a make-up session. The material
used for these sessions teaches the basic information covered in the 3 hour Protecting God’s Children training but is
adjusted to be age appropriate.
Bible Studies
This is an excellent way to listen to God's word and incorporate His message into our lives today. Bible study provides
a way to better understand the cultural and historical background of the time when the Scriptures were written and
the various writing styles that were used. Dates and times for Bible studies are based on participants preferences.
The Spiritual Reading Book Club
This group meets the third Thursday of the month at the Parish Center. Join us each month or any time you want to
discuss the month’s selection.
Lenten Renewal
An annual tradition at St. Joseph, parishioners set aside time to participate in “Lenten Renewal.” People gather once
a week in small groups to reflect on their faith, pray together, and reach out in service for the six weeks of Lent.
Lenten Renewal begins the week of Ash Wednesday and concludes the week before Holy Week. It is a great way to
set aside time for prayer, reflection and open ourselves to God’s grace and love. A variety of groups are available
throughout the week.
Men’s Scripture Group
Join the Men’s Scripture group! Enliven your faith and support one another in your life journey. The group meets
Thursdays from 6:15-7:30am at the Historic Little Church. Come any Thursday morning and check us out.
MOMS Group

of the Catholic Church, to pray together for our families, and to lift each other up on our faith journeys. Childcare is
provided in the Parish Nursery. Join a morning or an evening group. Cost: Free will donation toward cost of the book.
Faith Formation For the whole community
Adult Education and Spirituality Staff Contact: Cole Epping, Director of Children & Adult Faith Formation
The purpose of the Adult Education and Spirituality Ministry is to provide opportunities for adults to continue to
learn more about their faith and to reflect on and live a Christian lifestyle in community.
Small Christian Communities are made up of a small group of people who gather together to reflect on their faith,
to pray together, to discern how to apply Gospel values to their lives, to support one another in their life journeys

Parish Councils and Committees
Parish Pastoral Council
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is the guiding body of St. Joseph Catholic Community. The PPC exists to assist the
Pastor in all matters that affect the spiritual and material well-being of the Parish. The role of the PPC is to nourish
a parish environment that will encourage achievement of the parish mission. The PPC is accountable for the
development, evaluation, and communication of the parish mission and goals. Because the PPC is involved in the life
and ministry of the church, all of its work includes and arises out of prayerful reflection and discernment.
Finance Council
The Finance Council is a consulting body to the Pastor. The council’s purpose is to identify, evaluate and implement
(as required) financial policies and procedures that support the financial well-being of the parish.
Building and Grounds Committee
The Buildings and Grounds Committee deals with the "nuts and bolts" of the parish property. Its members are
knowledgeable in areas of construction, building trades, maintenance, heating and cooling, landscaping, plant care,
etc. The primary work of the committee is to ensure a smooth running facility while operating within the budget.
Each year the committee performs a "building audit." This is a careful look at all the facilities to assess the condition
of the property. From this audit the committee produces a plan to repair and maintain the property. This plan is an
essential piece of the annual budgeting process. The committee serves as a body of experts who advise the parish
business administrator.
Handy Angel’s
If you are a man or woman who likes to get your hands dirty and help with plant care inside and out, building
improvement, such as painting, doing set-up for events, such as Christmas or the Fall Festival, then you are a perfect
candidate to become a “Handy Angel”. This group shares their time and talent to help maintain church facilities for
the many groups who use our church building every day. If you have a specific skill or simply want to help with a
project, we would love your assistance!

Stewardship and Giving
Your generosity helps sustain our vibrant community! As we know, it takes a flock (our parishioners) to support and
sustain our beautiful places of worship, the many activities and events we offer, and our outreach programs that serve
those less fortunate than ourselves. Together we get involved with ministries to enhance our community. We
volunteer to make activities and events happen. We financially give to support the life of St. Joseph Catholic
Community for which we are truly grateful. To become involved, please see our Stewardship and Giving webpage:
