Each year, the Scholarship Committee of First United Methodist Church awards scholarships to church members who wish to pursue a post-secondary education. This includes, but is not limited to, graduating high school seniors, students already attending college, and seminary students.

Scholarships are funded through named endowments and other gifts to the church specified for scholarships. Students are eligible to receive a scholarship from the

church for up to five years, provided they meet the scholarship requirements. A new application is required each year.

Scholarship Application forms are available at the information centers in the A/B and the Wilke Center/D entrances and on the Student Ministries and Community pages at firstwichita.org.

Completed 2019-20 Scholarship Application packets are due at the church by Friday, January 18 at 5 p.m.

In 2019, the application due date is earlier in order to help students who are applying for other matching United Methodist scholarships. Earlier scholarship award decisions and announcements will also facilitate spring recognitions of First Church’s high school seniors.

If you have any questions about the scholarship process, please contact

Dr. Mike Willome, 2019 Scholarship Committee chairperson, at 943-9306.

First Church is pleased to once again host the AARP Tax-Aide community based tax preparation service. Beginning the first week in February and going through March, appointments will be available for free assistance with well trained tax preparers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This service was created especially for people aged 50 or older or

those who can’t afford paid tax preparation. Many folks struggle with the complexities of tax preparation while others just don’t know about benefits for which they qualify.

Preparation services will be held in the RNC room using the D entrance so there are no accessibility barriers. A receptionist will greet folks, and two or three tax preparers will be on hand each day for

this free service.Appointments are required.

Beginning the second week in January, the 90 minute daytime appointments may be made by

calling Libby Eaton (316-258-5157). Clients will receive a list of materials that are needed for the appointment.

AARP Tax-Aide

During the winter months we want to inform you of procedures in the event of inclement weather. First Church will follow the closing of Wichita School District, USD259 during the regular business hours. If the decision is made to close schools, the church offices will also be closed. The decision to cancel regularly scheduled church programming will be made by the Senior Pastor in

consultation with the church staff.Closing notices are reported to

several outlets. Look for updates on the First Church website, firstwichita.org, on the local television stations and/or their websites: Channel 3 (KSN), Channel 10 (KAKE), Channel 12 (KWCH). Some of these media outlets only post church closings on their websites.

Updates will also be shared through

our First Church App, E-news and on our social media sites via Facebook and Twitter. If you are not yet connected with us, download the app by texting “Firstwichita app” to 77977 and go to our Facebook page and “Like Us” and to our Twitter page and “Follow Us”. If you need assistance, feel free to contact Erin at the church.

Book Study:“Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times”

Tuesdays 7-8:00 p.m. ParlorJanuary 15-February 19 Led by Pastor Rebecca

“Fear is a complex emotion. Sometimes it saves us. More often it robs us of the life we want. But we can take our lives back. You’d be hard-pressed to overstate the extent to which fear, anxiety, and worry permeate our lives today. Fear wreaks havoc on our relationships and communities. It leads us into making bad decisions. It holds us back from the very pursuits that promise fulfillment and joy.” (from “Unafraid” by Adam Hamilton)

Several First Church staff members enjoyed a morning volunteering at the Kansas Food Bank in place of our December monthly staff meeting. Three pallets of food were pack-aged for the back pack for kids program! We then enjoyed a delicious lunch at Caesar’s Table, thanks to Staff Parish!

appreciation to Barbara Simons, our class teacher. We voted to contribute support to the Toilet Paper Fund, EmberHope, Share the Season, Operation Holiday, Grace Med, and the Guatemala Stove Project. In giving we are all blessed. Please come join us, as our doors are always open to everyone.

Pneuma 302DOur teacher, Dan Lord, led our Advent study on the simple rituals of

Christmas. One Sunday we focused on the ritual of darkness and light. Dan shared a Quaker saying, “May the light that is within me, see the light that is within you.” He also shared a poem: “I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.” Other lessons were focused on the Nativity, mothers, and babies.

We provided breakfasts for our Family Promise guests. Our classroom also provided a “home” for the week they were here. We enjoyed our annual Progressive Dinner with hosts: the Baldwins, the Willomes, and the Valliants. Peggy Valliant was our hostess for our December Pneuma Ladies.

We share in the grief of the Seely family, as they mourn the loss of Deb’s dad, Rev. Ken Short. We are grateful to have known Ken and celebrate the life that he led and the gifts that he shared. Please know that any and all are welcome to join our class as we journey into the new year.

Religious Nurture Center 100DWe enjoyed the holiday season by attending a performance of

“Winter Wonderettes”, hosted by the Forum Theatre Co., who generously provided reduced price tickets for our group to attend. Our Christmas party featured a band that played Christmas music and Christmas themed games with holiday prizes.

Special thanks to all the members of First Church who again supported our Pecan Fundraiser to make it a success. As we get excited to watch football bowls and playoff games, our Sunday School lessons in January will feature the inspirational movie “Facing the Giants”, which shows us to trust in the power of faith to give us the strength to persevere on the playing field and in our personal lives.

Seekers 306BWe wish everyone a happy and peaceful 2019! We start the

new year off by providing breakfast to the clients of the Interfaith Ministries Overflow Shelter. Items such as individually wrapped rolls, juice boxes, instant hot cereal packets, and easy to eat fruit like clementine cuties or bananas. Money is also welcome so items may be purchased as needed. Please contact Annette Schmidt about helping.

Dave Brant will continue the study of Acts. Check out the class notes he shares, they are a great study guide along with the book. Seekers women will meet to eat out the third Tuesday of the month. January is the month that ROMEOS will meet for breakfast. We continue to wish healing and strength to Jim Schmidt, Bob Sawyer, Bob Robinson, Lynn Lunsford and Janet Gasser. Please pray for our church staff, our Church and the world wide church as we go into 2019.

In December we welcomed Jack Focht’s return. The heart of our class always “grows fonder” when Jack is absent. We have been learning about the history of the church and Methodism, the personal story of Charles Wesley, and the controversies and practices of the early church. Our social was a luncheon at Rolling Hills Country Club. Jack finished the month with Christmas prose and poetry. On behalf of all the Double Ring class, we wish you a holiday full of the peace and love and the best of health in 2019.

50/50 107BWe enjoyed a Christmas Banquet in our room with good food

and lots of fun. Many class members helped with the planning. Our room was made festive with four ladies decorating it with beautiful Christmas decorations.

We enjoyed several teachers in December: Ernie Krehbiel, Libby Eaton, Leslie Coates and Kaylee Burgett, sharing about her trip to Uganda with an Emporia State University professor and students. The Christmas season and New Year bring many blessings, we pray that all enjoy the holidays with your family and church friends.

Hand in Hand 101BRuth Martinez taught Adam Hamilton’s study “The Journey: Walking

the Road to Bethlehem” in Advent. It has been an interesting study. In January we will join the 50/50 class for 6 weeks to learn about Rev. Charles Claycomb’s near death dreams.

Poinsettias have been a big theme in our class as Linda Hopper is the organizer for the church. A number of class members helped with the delivery. It has been a joy to touch base with those who are homebound. We had a lovely Christmas party at Larksfield with Grace Brooks as our hostess. We enjoyed our “tasteful” white elephant exchange that has been going on for many years, it is still fun! Eliana led in several Christmas carols. The ladies luncheon will be January 11 at 12 p.m., more details to come.

Koinonia 204AKoinonia members eat together on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and on

Friday at 6:30 p.m. We welcome anyone who would like to join us for a meal and friendly conversation. Stop by 204A for a schedule. We have been discussing women in the Bible. We invite you to join us on Sunday morning in 204A for fellowship, study, and discussion.

People’s Open Doors 300DWe had the joy of celebrating the blessing of Christmas as a class.

We participated in the Christmas Decoration Contest and were honored as the recipients of the People’s Choice Award. The Chapel Foyer provided a lovely space to help make the season special. Our appreciation goes out to all involved in the planning of this event, and the Church Open House. We enjoyed a Christmas brunch at Caesar’s Table and the Christmas Mission Brunch as a class. A special “thank you” to Annette Schmidt and her volunteers for making a delicious brunch.

We continue studying “The Journey” by Rev. Adam Hamilton. The study has revealed to us the historical information surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ and the miracle that took place. Our continued

Thank you to everyone who donated toward the purchase of poinsettias that were delivered to our homebound members. Our Senior Saints Committee sponsors this important ministry every year. It is a tremendous blessing to our recipients, and a truly meaningful First Church tradition.

A special thank you to Linda Hopper, chairperson of the Senior Saints Committee for organizing our Poinsettia deliveries again this year. Thank you to everyone who assisted with this year’s deliveries. Below is a list of individuals who contributed to our flower ministry and the names of those who are being honored or memorialized:
