Mark your calendars for the 2012 Annual ASNC Conference

This year, the largest autism gathering in North Carolina will focus on social communication and relationships

- with perspectives from professionals, family members, and individuals on the spectrum.

Featured speakers include:

Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC-SLP, will present her nationally-acclaimed Social Thinking work-

shop: "Thinking About YOU Thinking About ME."

Dwayne Ballen, father, sportscaster, and author of the blog, Journey with Julian, will discuss a father's

perspective on autism.

David Hamrick and Lindsey Nebeker, adults with autism who were featured on Good Morning Amer-

ica, will share their story, "Living and Loving with Autism."

Kathleen Dolbee, mother, teacher, and advocate, will present "Creative Ways to Teach Social Thinking

and Social Skills for Home and School."

Individuals and families affected by autism, and professionals in the autism field, will also have the opportu-

nity to network, connect with local support groups, meet with a variety of businesses that support the autism

community, and earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs)*.

As always the conference will offer a wide range of vendors serving families whose members have autism.

The ASNC Bookstore will be present as well.

Watch for more information in upcoming issues of Autism Matters or go to www.autismsociety-nc.org to

learn more.

More from ASNC…

Many people want to know "Is financial assistance available for the conference?" There are several ways that

you can seek support to attend the conference. We will briefly outline two here and you can read more details

online. If you are a Mecklenburg County parent of whose child has ASD or a teacher who works with ASD

students, you may also find local assistance through the Autism Society of North Carolina–Mecklenburg

County Chapter.

1. Jean Wolff-Rossi Fund for Participant Involvement - This Fund provides assistance to people with an

intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD) http://www.nccdd.org/home/definition.html

(see definition for I/DD) or a parent, family member or individual guardian of a person with a I/DD or parents

of a child at risk of I/DD. Applicants must be residents of North Carolina. Reimbursement is available for up

to 3 of the following items:

* Seminar/conference registration

* Child Care or Respite (up to $8/hr, maximum $170/day)

* Personal Assistance Services (up to $8/hr, maximum $170/day)

* Hotel/Lodging (up to $65.90 plus tax in-state; $78.05 plus tax out of state)

* Transportation ($.50/mile – NC State government mileage rate is subject to change)

Other expenses are at the discretion of the Rossi Fund Advisory Committee. An application must be received

by the NC Council on Developmental Disabilities 30 days prior to the registration due date for an in-state

event and 60 days prior to the registration due date for an out-of-state event. (All "Early Bird" registration

dates will be used as the due date.) Applications are reviewed monthly by the Rossi Fund Advisory Commit-

tee. All applications for a particular event will be reviewed at the same time. For more information http://

www.nccdd.org/services/rossi_fund.html

2. CAP Funding (built into the annual Personal Care Plan or PCP) - The case manager must complete a

plan/update revision with the registration information to include cost and justification for the training (i.e.

what the training is, how it relates to the parent and consumer and his/her diagnosis, how it will be used, etc.).

This process can take time and may mean that the parent has to pay out of pocket and be reimbursed from the

LME. For more information about how CAP can be used to pay for the conference, contact your case man-

ager.

Mecklenburg County parents may be able to receive a scholarship through funds made available from our

local chapter. Last spring the chapter funded 5 parents to attend the conference . To help make scholarships

available for parents in the future, these parents volunteered their time and sold Belk Charity tickets to build

up the fund.

Teachers from Mecklenburg County can apply for funding through the GLD Design Scholarship. Look for

more information regarding these options in an upcoming issue of “Autism Matters.”

Kudos for Kiddos!

My son Albert and his fellow students at Charlotte United

Christian Academy have all been excited to have their art-

work displayed at the Mint Museum! The curator of the

Mint Museum asked his school to study the life and works

of Romare Bearden and to create artwork in a similar style

to celebrate this artist’s

contributions.

Each child was asked to create a mixed-media

collage of an important historical person, family

member, or a memorable life experience. They chose a

color scheme and used fabric, paint, magazines and other

materials to create their pieces of art. It was such a great

experience for him and our family to

see Albert's and his fellow students’

artwork displayed at the museum.

Thanks to Albert's art teacher, Mrs.

Smith, and to all the ABA staff for

all their support and dedication to the

kids!

a successful fundraising venture thanks to Sumi

Ganesh, Trina Roeder, Nancy Nestor, Karen Murphy,

Gail Gilles, Lisa Pangellos, Kathy Snyder, Angela

Schuller, Cathy Henry, Janet Warren, and the numer-

ous parents, teachers, and friends who sold and pur-

chased tickets.
