October 20, 2019 To: Clergy, Religious and Laity in the Archdiocese of New Orleans My Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Pope Francis had designated this October to be the Extraordinary Mis-sionary Month and October 20 is the culmination as we celebrate World Mission Sunday throughout the world. The theme this year is Baptized and Sent. Pope Francis invites us to see this October as a special moment to live out the mission we share through our baptism as God’s children, that is to bring the Gospel of Christ to the world. He invites us to pray and act so that the mission of the Church will continue as Jesus command-ed. World Mission Sunday gives us the opportunity to experience that we are in solidarity through our prayer and sacrifice with the universal Church so that the name of Jesus and his message will reach to the “ends of the earth”. Your gifts will help build local churches and foster vocations. It will sustain priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders in more than 1,100 mission dioceses in Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Your prayers and gift will send a missionary to an area where there is no Catholic presence. It can give a child a bible and help parents share faith with their children. REINTRODUCING HOUSELING CLOTHS
St. Patrick’s Church is pleased to revive the traditional practice of using houseling cloths on the Communion rails at 9:15 a.m. Mass. Since this practice has been absent for decades, some explanation is needed. The unfamiliar word comes through Middle English from Old English. The noun form is pronounced hou-zuhl (two syllables, with the accent on the first syllable, and the S making a Z sound). It originally meant a sacrificial offering, but by the 8th century the Christian usage specifically meant the Holy Eucharist. The participle form houseling (pronounced with three syllables) refers to the act of administering the Holy Eucharist to communicants. The Catholic Encyclopedia article about altar rails (published in 1907) explains houseling cloths: “The Rituale Romanum (tit. iv, cap. ii, n. 1) prescribes that a clean white cloth be extended before those who receive Holy Communion. This cloth is to be of fine linen, as it is solely intended as a sort of corporal to receive the particles which may by chance fall from the hands of the priest. It is usually fastened on the sanctuary side and when in use is drawn over the top of the rail. It should extend the full length of the rail, and be about two feet wide, so that the communicant, taking it in both hands, may hold it under his chin.” The use of houseling cloths was the norm of the Catholic Church for centuries, but after the liturgical changes of the 1960s it virtually disappeared. The revival of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite is leading to a recovery of traditions, and we are pleased to resume the use of houseling cloths as an additional safeguard to help protect the Sacred Host from falling on the floor if It should somehow be dropped. In these times when Catholic belief in the Real Presence is faltering in some places, the use of houseling cloths is an opportunity to emphasize our firm faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, and to demonstrate our love for Him by exercising an appropriate level of reverence and caution in the handling of the Blessed Sacrament. Here are some practical guidelines for using the
houseling cloth. Communicants kneeling at the rail should
place their hands under the cloth. It is helpful to lift the cloth
somewhat (without tugging on it) and draw it toward one’s
body so as to create a flat surface that could catch the Host if
It fell. The assisting ministers will still use patens at
Communion, and communicants should still receive the Host
in the usual manner. After receiving Communion, the
communicant should release the cloth and leave it in place
for the next communicant. Please be cautious about leaning
on the rail for support while kneeling or standing up—the
cloth over the top of the rail will tend to slip and move.
Communicants who cannot safely kneel should remain
standing. Communicants whose hands may be impeded due
to carrying babies or guiding young children should not
worry about handling the cloth, and should simply leave it
hanging in place on the rail. With a little bit of practice this
newly resumed tradition will become a familiar part of our
Catholic gestures of reverence for Christ’s Real Presence in
the Holy Eucharist.
