Historical Museum presents Construcng Our Community The Bay County Historical Society is pleased to present our latest exhibit! Construcng our Community features many different architectural styles which reflect the use of different building materials. Through photographs, maps, and arfacts, visitors will learn how enterprising pioneers used available resources to create the building materials (such as bricks, blocks and lumber) to construct our community. As part of this exhibit, and in partnership with the Bay-Arenac ISD/Great Start Collaborave, we are excited to present Big Blue Blocks from the Imaginaon Playground. Children and adults alike will experience the challenge of using these larger-than-life-size blocks to create structures that represent our community such as bridges and ships. You may even recreate City Hall! Incorporang guided block play into the hands-on poron of the exhibit not only teaches children historical concepts, but also emphasizes how history relates to many aspects of our lives. In addion, research shows engaging in block play provides the unstructured, imaginave smulaon that is a crical component of healthy social, emoonal, and intellectual development in children. It also helps to develop math, language, and communicaon skills, as well as early literacy skills. This exhibit and subsequent programming was made possible in part by the Dow Corning Foundaon Donor Advised Endowment Fund of the Bay Area Community Foundaon and the Bay-Arenac ISD. John Popper from Blues Traveler and Joshua Davis from The Voice kick off the season followed by back to back shows by The Verve Pipe and the Accidentals in October. November is an exciting month, with fantastic tribute shows to Ricky Nelson, performed by his sons Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, and a Tribute to Carole King. Bay County Arts & Culture News September-December 2017

Bay Arts Council launches mini-grant program The Bay Arts Council is excited to be launching our arts granting program in the fall of 2017. These small (<$500) grants will be available to non-profit organizations to help with the cost of arts programming. We are planning a simple, one-page grant application form. Please spread the word to organizations that could benefit from a grant. Contact Mike Bacigalupo at [email protected] or 989-892-2660 #1 for more information. The Bay Arts Council raises money through contributions from generous donors, and by partnering with other arts organizations on fundraising efforts. We have no paid staff, so every dollar donated goes directly to supporting the arts in our community.

Think “Saturn” at the Planetarium this fall After 13 years in orbit around the planet Saturn, the Cassini spacecraft is reaching the end of its mission. This fall, the Planetarium will feature a new show and special presentations to celebrate Cassini’s many accomplishments.

"Saturn: Jewel of the Heavens" uses NASA's best photography to create a 3-dimensional tour of the rings, atmosphere, and moons of the solar system's second largest planet. It's like riding piggyback on the Cassini space probe itself!

But the feature program isn't the only part of the Planetarium experience. Every show includes a live short "epilogue" that calls up the latest discoveries and hot topics. In this case, you'll be able to see the newest Cassini images as soon as they are released.

Bay Concert Band enters 41st season Under the artistic and music direction of Peter Makar Jr. IV, Bay Concert Band opens its 41st season on Wednesday, November 1 at the Bay City Central High School Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults; and students 6th grade and under admitted free. The program begins at 7:30 pm; doors open at 7 pm. The concert, entitled “A Musical Variety Show,” features a wide range of band literature from Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” to Robert Russell Bennett’s legendary “Suite of Old American Dances”. Along the way, the band will perform works of Sousa, Filmore, Grundman, Suppe and a special arrangement of “Old Folks at Home and in Foreign Lands” based on “Way Down upon the Swanee Ribber” published in 1914.
