Pastors Note ~ 3rd Sunday 2019

“THE CARPENTER” – reminding us about the commandment by anonymous

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side-by-side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed, without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding, and it grew into a major differ-ence, and finally, it exploded into an exchange of bitter words, followed by weeks of silence. One morning, there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days' work," he said. "Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with? Could I help you?" Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother! Last week, there was a meadow between us. He recently took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll do him one better. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence. An 8-foot fence - so I won't need to see his place, or his face, anymore." The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails, and the post-hole digger, and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you." The older brother had to go to town, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day -- measuring, sawing, and nailing. About sun-set, when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge... a

bridge that stretched from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, with handrails, and all! And, the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming toward them, his hand outstretched... "You are quite a fellow to build this bridge, after all I've said and done." The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox onto his shoulder. "No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you," said the older brother. I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, but I have many more bridges to build. Just remem-ber this...

1. God won't ask what kind of car you drove, but He'll ask how many people you helped get where they needed to go. 2. God won't ask the square footage of your house, but He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home. 3. God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet, but He'll ask how many you helped to clothe. 4. God won't ask how many friends you had, but He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend. 5. God won't ask in what neighborhood you lived, but He'll ask how you treated your neighbors. 6. God won't ask about the color of your skin, but He'll ask about the content of your character. 7. God won't ask why it took you so long to seek Salvation, but He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, and not to the gates of Hell.

What’s Happening at St. Henry

Everyday Strength Cancer Support Group… Everyday Strength Cancer Support is a support group for people who have or have gone through cancer. The support group meets every Sunday after the 8:30am Mass at 9:30am in the office Meeting room. If you have questions you can contact Carol O’Bill at 503-665-0032 or Beth Russell at 503 -281-4311.

Spiritual Adoption… After all Sunday Masses on Saturday, January 26st and Sunday, January 27th, St Henry Respect Life Committee persons will be passing out spiritual adoption prayer cards. Please consider taking one and praying for a child conceived the previous week whose mother is tempted to abort her child. Spiritual adoption parents are asked to pray for the parents and the child. Thank you to all who share in this good work, a work recommended by the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen. Questions: Jerry McAfee, phone # 503-260-8995. Conception - The Beginning - At conception our baby begins the growth journey from two cells to, eventually, a newborn baby. This is possible because all the genetic information needed to accomplish this feat is contained in the DNA ( deoxyribonucleic acid) on the 23 pairs of chromosomes given to the child at conception by their mother and father. The DNA makes each child distinctly different from their parents and brothers and sisters (except for identical twins and multiple births). Now we begin our 9 month journey praying for the safety and development of our spiritually adopted baby.

Special thanks to these team members who, in addition to the co-chairs are: Glenn Zmuda and Mina Hernandez from Pastoral Council and Vicky Leliefeld from Administrative Council. Currently we are in the process of hiring a construction professional to do a limited scope review of our architectural designs with the goal of reducing construction costs. Our plan is to continue with fund raising once this review is complete. Kathy and Larry Thompson, Co-Chairs

Prayer Service for Peace

If you weren’t among the 60 or so people who attended the Ecumenical Prayer Service for Peace at St. Henry Church on January 21st you missed a wonderful experience. The Youth Choir under the direction of Theo Burke and Steve Piplovick did an outstanding job. Their music truly made the evening special. We were joined by Dr. LaVerne Lewis, Lay Leader and Treasurer of Gresham United Methodist Church, Rev. Tom Young, Pastor of Cherry Park Presbyterian Church, Josh Stromberg-Wojcik, M.Div. from the Evangelical Lu-theran Church of America, and Deacon Lou De Sitter of St. Henry. Their participation was much appreciated. Homemade cookies, apple cider and fellowship was shared after the service. A special thanks to Terry Tygielska for her work on this event and to Shirley Wilson for helping with the beau-tiful program and for her work on publicity. Whether or not you were able to attend, please keep praying for peace in our community, our country and our world. The St. Henry Justice and Peace Committee

St. Henry Stewardship ~ 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Catholic Communications This Week

“Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot por-tions to those who had nothing prepared…” (Nehemiah 8:10) Ezra’s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. He wants us to be happy! However, God expects us to be grateful for all that He has given us and to generously share our blessings with those who are in need without expecting anything in return.

SCOTT HAHN REFLEXIONA SOBRE EL 3º DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO

Is 55,3).
