PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Gladys Coia, Esq. President, Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce

The arts have long been known to revitalize neighborhoods, spur economic growth, and engage community members as volunteers, performers, and audience members. Studies have shown that participating in the arts is also personally beneficial, it can boost your self-esteem, reduce stress, and enhance your ability to work and communicate with others.

Our community has so many ways for both children and adults to enjoy the arts. We have literary arts, performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and culinary arts. There is something for everyone right here in Miami Shores.

Whether you are an audience member or performer, wandering through an art gallery, taking a painting class or spending the afternoon painting pottery, the advantages are indisputable. With all of the benefits the arts have to offer, to ourselves, our community, and our economy, the chamber dedicates this issue of the Egret to spotlight some of our local members that provide us with the opportunity to get involved, get engaged, and have an arts-filled summer!

MCDS Arts Center OpeningOn Thursday, May, 4, Over 350 guests spent the evening at Miami Country Day School to watch the curtain rise on the Center for the Arts. It was a magnificent evening to celebrate Arts Education at Miami Country Day School. Guests enjoyed live performances by Miami City Ballet School, The French Horn Collective, Lauren Shapiro, and City Theater.

The Center for the Arts is a 35,000 square foot facility that is now home to performance venues, gallery space, and classrooms for a wide-range of arts programs including music, drama, dance, fine arts, ceramics, and digital arts.  Students ages three through 12th grade

are now able to utilize and enjoy the Center for the Arts to explore and develop skills required for their futures. Before guests entered the Center for the Arts for the inaugural performance in the Theater, the newest sculpture on the school’s campus was unveiled.   The MCDS a la Indiana was created by the Head of School, Dr. John Davies, and was inspired by pop artist, Robert Indiana, and Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture. The sculpture, which sits in the circle outside the Center for the Arts, is 7’ high x 7’ wide x 39” deep.  It is constructed in metal, fiberglass and epoxy paint and fabricated by Haligon Fine Arts.Following the unveiling, guests were led to the 630-seat Theater for performances by prominent Miami Country Day alumnae who have made their career in the arts. Jacqueline Jove ‘04, violinist and graduate of Yale University; Sandra Hamaoui ‘11, soprano and graduate of

Outstanding Student Awards

A great time was had by all at the 29th annual Outstanding Student Awards at Miami Theater Center! Twelve students and one teacher were honored by the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce with special recognition for 2 honorees by the Community Learning Partnership. The evening began with a wine and cheese reception at Lucio Coffee to Wine before walking next door to Miami Theater Center for a dinner buffet prior to the award ceremony. Greater Miami Shores President Gladys Coia hosted the event and the children were presented with certificates by Miami Shores Vice Mayor Sean Brady.

Along with many friends, family members and school leaders we were also joined by Mayor Claudia Cubillos of El Portal, Mayor Tracy Truppman of Biscayne Park, Councilwoman Alice Burch of Miami Shores and Councilman Jonathan Meltz of Miami Shores. We would like to send a special thank you to all of our sponsors that made this wonderful evening possible - Lead Sponsors: The Cushman School,

Georgee Kluck Team - Keller Williams, and Miami Country Day School; Title Sponsors: The Community Learning Partnership of Miami Shores, Doctors Charter School, Harvey Bilt Photography, Lucio Coffee to Wine, Miami Theater Center, and Montessori School of North Miami.

San Francisco Conservatory of Music; and Navi Rawat ‘95, actress and graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. The beautiful program ended with a wonderful performance by the Class of 2017 musicians and members of Country Day’s Contemporary Music Ensemble, 21 Hearts, One Beat. The evening commenced with food and drink, music, and walking tours of the venue. The Center for the Arts is a project that resulted from a $16.5 Million Capital Campaign for Miami Country Day School, in which 500 donors, including trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, contributed to the campaign.  For the school, the arts are not an extracurricular. They are essential to the school’s Mission.  As a non-profit independent school, philanthropy is the catalyst for such endeavors as the Center for the Arts. The school’s Board of Trustees started exploring this idea five years ago and broke ground January 2015.  In October 2016, the progress was celebrated with the traditional Topping Off ceremony. A special thank you to the Garner Moore Family, who led the funding with a gift of $1 million. campaign.miamicountryday.org | www.miamicountryday.org

Two star athletes from Doctors Charter School of Miami Shores have been selected to attend their respective colleges on full athletic scholarships. Jonathan Gill has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy as a member of their track and field team, and Kevin David has received a full track and field scholarship from St. Thomas University. The two athletes are top performers at the “A” charter school and will now add this Division I achievement to their accomplishments.

For DCS, this is one more example of the power of and potential of what is possible in an outstanding educational environment. Doctors Charter does not have the training facilities or resources of most public schools yet achieves success on par with the best public and private schools in South Florida.

Dr. Kelly Andrews, Executive Director of DCS, will make these two exceptional student athletes available to you during a letter signing ceremony to experience their spirit and their empowering stories on Thursday, May 17th at 10 am at Doctors Charter School, 11301 NW 5th Avenue, Miami Shores, FL 33168

Cushman’s Middle School Students Give Back!

Every year in their advisory classes, Middle School students at The Cushman School research different local service organizations and, as a class, choose one that they would like to support. Students reach out to these organizations during their first semester, coordinate their service projects and schedule times to work onsite. This year, students worked to support the South Florida SPCA for Horses (Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), Coconut Island Clean-Up, Pelican Harbor, Ronald McDonald House, Feeding South Florida and the Lotus House. Hats off to these students and their teachers for giving back to our community.

The antithesis of ennui, Miami Shores vibrated with an interpretive performance, the epitome of ‘performance art’. Fernando Calzadilla performed like none we’d seen before.A Duologue (dialogue limited to two participants) unfolded as Calzadilla personified his paintings. These were exhibited around the room, setting the stage for a ‘live’ gallery experience. His paintings, all the traditional “reclining nude” subject, were executed in various styles, methods, and formats. All on organic canvas using pastels, acrylics, and oils as mediums, the frames were illustrated as part of the artworks. The audience was invited to duologue with Calzadilla about his work, ideals, colors, philosophy. We learned throughout a one-hour performance that he’s fascinated with both

quantum physics and string theory and he does not like the color green. He lives in the moment and paints his emotions at the time… What feels right. The written word is limiting, existing ‘inside’ the box.No one asked “why the reclining nude”, a symbol of civilizations? An ode to women? Several times during the evening

he excoriated how patronizing and critical society has been to women. No one asked, ‘who are you tonight”? Why did you invite us? As he revealed himself so did we.Stephanie brought a bouquet. She had anticipated Calzailla’s aura that evening with complimentary lavender/blue hydrangeas. She requested to enter into the painting to give him the flowers. He allowed it. When she asked where to place them, he reminded her that he could not see the painting so he did not know. One person in the audience asked about the use of intense red as his primary body color and background. We learned that for Calzadilla, red was not always indicative of passion, but a color of emphasis and power, and pleasure in the making. Each person responds electro-chemically to the sight of different colors. Is red passionate or not? Yes! We learned of his fascination with physics, the science not metaphysics. Was the event happening somewhere else at the same time? Did our viewing of the event change everything? When asked “what questions do you wish the audience would ask?” his restatement of the question was “I guess you are asking me what I would like to talk about.” What followed was the recitation of a dream, and a discussion of the innocence of the dream state and loss of innocence upon learning how to speak. The discussion flowed to our existence, the universe, and life choices. After one hour, the audience could feel the difficulty of holding a pose for that long, while responding to unanticipated questions. We left, wanting to continue, hoping for more. Maybe soon?Fernando Calzadilla was awarded 14 times best set, costumes, or lighting designer

for his work in Caracas. Multi-Talented Calzadilla is a theater designer, dramaturg, performance scholar and artist with a PhD in Performance Studies. His wife, Elaiza Irizarry, is the former executive director of Miami Theater Center and serves on Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors. With their son, chef Lucio, the family has opened LUCIO COFFEE TO WINE gourmet shop, 9802 NE Second Ave. - Written by Plume Noir

Forget everything you know about traditional pottery painting studios, the Artsy Hive is the newest DIY outpost in Miami and its creative, hands-on concept is entirely unique! The 40-seat paint it yourself studio will give guests the chance to take a break from electronics and explore their artistic side while creating one of a kind keepsakes for friends, family, or themselves.

At the Artsy Hive guests will have complete creative flexibility and can even design items to match their home décor. Creations can be customized by guests so people can head home with a mug bearing a child’s handprint, a special photo frame, or a bowl for their favorite pet. The knowledgeable staff will be able to assist customers and idea books will be on hand for additional inspiration.

Dreamed up by professional artists, and husband and wife team, Ineabelle Soto and Anderson Martinez, the studio reflects their creative backgrounds. Both are graduates of the Escuela Central de Artes Visuales, a specialized visual art school in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Anderson went on to become an industrial designer and Soto studied advertising and marketing before becoming a popular cake decorator. Both have a true passion for the arts and were inspired to build something that add something special to the community.

“We’re so thrilled to bring this studio to Miami Shores,” says Soto. “Adults and children both need opportunities to express their creative energy and that’s what Artsy Hive is all about.”

The studio features a fully equipped open work area. Guests can choose from pre-fired pottery choices (all food and dishwasher safe), a huge selection of non-toxic colored glazes, brushes, sponges, and electric kilns. The studio also has a semi-private area for special events, and everyone from children to

seniors are welcome to host parties and other get-togethers.

Initially pottery painting is the primary focus of the studio, with future plans to expand into glass fusion, craft classes, workshops, and special events for families, children, artists, and bloggers alike. “With the demand for handmade, craft art classes in Miami we feel Artsy Hive will become the creative outlet for DIY enthusiasts” adds Soto.

The Artsy Hive is a perfect outlet for overworked executives; busy moms; birthday

party guests; couples or anyone else who needs a chance to let their imagination run wild. It’s a wonderful place to make memories with family and friends.

Artsy Hive Studio is located at 211 NE 95th St. Miami Shores, FL 33138.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS

Fellow graduates of the Escuela Central de Artes Visuales, a specialized visual art school in San Juan, Puerto Rico, both Ineabelle Soto

and Anderson Martinez have an extended art background. Anderson studied architecture, later discovering he had a passion for industrial design. After a decade of studying, Ineabelle dove head first into the advertising and marketing field. After their first child was born, their focus immediately became “family first” shifting their careers to make time for their new baby. Anderson decided to open an industrial design studio while Ineabelle began designing cakes for events and special occasions after taking baking & cake design classes. In their continuous search for a creative outlet and with a passion to fill a void in the community, they decided to take their experience and turn it into Artsy Hive Studio.
