Join Shelter and Animal Advocates from across the state for 2019 Stand Up for Animal Shelters: Policy and Advocacy Monday, March 4 at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Monday, March 5 at Room 211-A in the Legislative Office Building Join us on Monday for Creating New Perspectives on Animal Cruelty Three Workshops for Shelter Professionals, Law Enforcement, District Attorneys and ACO/DCOs A Program of the New York State Animal Protection Federation Education Fund 9:00-10:30am: What You Can Do to Help Your DA Make a Solid Animal Abuse Case Speaker: Jed Painter, Counsel to the District Attorney in the Nassau County DA’s office and one of the top animal cruelty prosecutors in the state One of the state’s top animal abuse prosecutors will lay out what he needs from animal cruelty law enforcement to build a case against animal abusers and win in court. 10:30 am-Noon: Animal Hoarding: Why and How it Happens Speaker: Shalimar Hightower, Animal Crimes Manager for the HSUS Animal Rescue Team This session will delve into the causes, dynamics and harms caused to animals by hoarding. Noon-1:00 pm: Luncheon Keynote Speaker: State Senator Monica Martinez (D-Suffolk County) Senator Martinez was a champion of animal issues when she was on the Suffolk County Legislature. Elected to the Senate in November, 2018, she is now chair of the newly created Domestic Animal Welfare Committee. Lunch will be provided. 1:00-2:30 pm: It Happens: What You Need to Know When Handling Wild Animals Speaker: Lt. Liza-J Bobseine, Region Four Headquarters, NYS ENCON Police While most of the time, ACOs, DCOs and Humane Law Enforcement are responding to cruelty cases involving companion animals, there are times when you’ll be faced with wildlife, like racoons or hedgehogs. Learn some basic techniques for handling wildlife and resources you can call on for help.
