A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail,[8] despite the fact that 52% of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.

Quoting Frank Ra (author of the new year’s resolution book “A course in hap-piness”: “Resolutions are more sustainable when shared, both in terms of with whom you share the benefits of your resolution, and with whom you share the path of maintaining your resolution. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with new year’s resolutions”. It is also noted that talking with a counselor about setting goals and new year resolutions can help you keep those resolutions.

École Sam Livingston Elementary

“Bonne Année” from école SAm livingSton elementAry.We are all refreshed and ready to tackle new ideas and a new year. Our report cards will be going home January 30th and while the timing of report cards has changed, the format is the same.

Many people start exer-cising regularly as a New Year’s Resolution but at Sam Livingston we have been adding regular morning exercise to our classrooms since September. Research shows that morning exercise primes the mind for learning so our school implemented the ‘Réveille-Matin’ program this year. This decision was based on the research and book ‘Spark’ by Dr. J. J. Ratey. Our teacher’s report that the children are more alert through the school day, and the additional exercise time still falls within the Alberta Education curriculum guidelines. It seems to be work-ing. Maybe our success will encourage you to add morning exercise into your new year as well! We will be benefiting from an Alberta Opera performance on January 16th, and Fun Lunch and Family Movie Night will be hosted by School Council on January 24th.

A reminder that our School Council meets on Monday, Janu-ary 13th at 7pm and all parents are encouraged to come and be part of the decisions that affect your child’s life. Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year to one and all!

From all of us at SEE, Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope that this finds you well rested after the winter break.

The month of December was short, but action packed at SEE. Character Day saw students exploring the character that they demonstrate in an online environment. Our children enjoyed a Fun Lunch supplied by Little Caesar’s while wearing their casual clothes. The FFCA High School came to SEE to perform

a few acts of their play, “The Little Mermaid”, which was watched entirely by our Grade 3’s at the High

School. The Grade 2’s went skiing and the Grade 3’s and 4’s went to our Middle

School to watch their performance of “Romeo & Harriet”. The Kindergar-tener’s had and in-house field trip presented by Teacher’s Pet.

All of SEE’s classes gave back to the community for the holidays by way of the

Veteran’s Food Bank, Samaritan’s Purse or “Secret Senior’s”.

We look forward to an exciting and dynamic 2014 at SEE, not only with our students, but also in the continuation of strengthening and building our Parental Partnerships with our SEE families.

Area Man Unsure About Fitness Plan-Ruse From the Wire January /2014

In an effort to appease his wife’s concern about his blood pressure, area man Jim Stax agreed to some new years personal training sessions. At his first appointment, Brad, the young and robust trainer proclaimed that he was going to “torch” Jim’s hamstrings, and “destroy” his deltoid muscles. Jim, 67, commented “I am not prepared to do any fighting today, I’m tougher than I look though.” While glancing in Brad’s direction, Jim added “..he doesn’t know who he’s dealing with” -S. Deschamps

COFFEETALKIt’s that time again!I have an issue with New Year Resolutions...my issue is that I can’t keep em’! Like most people, I fall back into my old ways of living because of reasons I believe I just can’t control. But I have to admit, that’s a cop out. I just go back to my comfort zone and convince myself that I really didn’t need that positive change in my life anyways. So in denial! I found this amazing article to help us all “Keep ‘our’ Resolutions” so that we stay on course, don’t falter and stay strong. Any change is difficult to accept and work on, but in the end..if you stick with it, many other positives start to flow into your life as well. Good luck everyone! I certainly need it. - Bobbie-Jo Bergner

Keep Your Resolutions!Have you ever made resolutions at New Year’s, only to later watch your resolutions retreat and your dreams dive? Don’t despair. Try these strategies for a truly happy New Year.

Join a group or use the buddy systemListening to each other breeds compassion for every member, for ourselves, and for others who are not part of our circle.

Buddies and groups also provide an environment in which we give immediate feedback on what has been achieved, acknowledge each other for our commitments, help each other tweak our intentions, and challenge each other when we are slipping.

MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

Consider a life coachCoaching, like the buddy system, keeps resolutions alive by clarifying intentions, making public commitments, reporting on success (or lack thereof), acknowledging success, and in general, keeping our personal-growth conversation alive. Through the process of talking with a life coach, people learn more about their inner workings, and after a period of time they are able to coach themselves.

Take responsibility for your actionsThe first step in planning is to recognize why we did not keep our commitments. This step requires us to fully acknowledge that we are in the driver’s seat of our lives. What kept us from meeting our resolutions was the result of our own decisions and choices.

Use the SMART strategy when goal-settingThe best goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based.

Other tips: Consider New Year’s resolutions, stated intentions, commitments, stated goals, or whatever you wish to call them, as opportunities to develop crucial life skills such as patience, integrity, honesty, and more.

Don’t let perfectionist values inhibit you. Embrace the aphorism, “A job that’s worth doing is worth doing less than well.” This will help you to overcome fear of failure, and combined with honest self-assessment it will help you learn how you operate when stating intentions.

Concentrate on positive thoughts, not negative ones. Identify your negative thoughts as your mind’s way of playing games with your true self. - Source: alive.com

WHAT IS FRENCH IMMERSION?French Immersion is a form of bilingual education. Students, whose first language is not French, are taught the curriculum mandated by Alberta Education using French as the medium for instruction. Students take part in cultural events and extra-cur-ricular activities that enhance their understanding of the French language.

Where iS école St. ceciliA AnD Who cAn AttenD?École St. Cecilia is a K-6 Catholic French Immersion school in the community of Acadia that draws students from Calgary’s southeast quadrant. Communities east of MacLeod Trail and south of Glenmore Trail are within the school’s boundaries. Your Official NewsletterCommunity Things to DoBook clUBS in cAlgAry There are good reasons why book clubs continue to thrive, despite changes in literary appetites, demographics and technology. The communal act of reading the same book as someone else and then hotly debating the deep meaning underlying those well-thumbed pages never loses its appeal, especially when those debates are fuelled by a plate of cookies, a platter of cheese or a glass of wine. A few hours in the good company of other book lovers, complete with passionate discussions and snacks, is a fun way to learn and socialize at the same time!

Estimates vary Estimates vary widely on the number of active book clubs in Canada, but it’s a safe bet to say that everybody knows somebody who belongs to a book club. Book club mandates cover a wide spectrum of interests - some geared toward specific genres, others that span a more general range of books. In recent years, even the growth of online book clubs has skyrocketed, making sharing books with like-minded people even easier. You don’t even have to clean the house when it’s your turn to host! Book clubs, both public and private, flourish in every quadrant of the city.

Your Official NewsletterCommunity CornerCoping with pet Loss - grieving a pet

Given the intense bond most of us share with our animals, it’s natural to feel devastated by feelings of grief and sadness when a pet dies. While some people may not understand the depth of feeling you had for your pet, you should never feel guilty or ashamed about grieving for an animal friend. Instead, use these healthy ways to cope with the loss, comfort yourself and others, and begin the process of moving on.

tips For Coping with the grieF oF pet Loss

Sorrow and grief are normal and natural responses to death. Like grief for humans, grief for animal companions can only be dealt with over time, but there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. Here are some suggestions:

• Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel, and don’t tell yourself how to feel either. Your grief is your own, and no one else can tell you when it’s time to “move on” or “get over it.” Let yourself feel whatever you

feel without embarrassment or judgment. It’s okay to be angry, to cry or not to cry. It’s also okay to laugh, to find moments of joy, and to let go when you’re ready.

• Reach out to others who have lost pets. Check out online message boards, pet loss hotlines, and pet loss support groups. If your own friends, family members, therapist, or clergy do not work well with the grief of pet loss, find someone who does.

• Rituals can help healing. A funeral can help you and your family members openly express your feelings. Ignore people who think it’s inappropriate to hold a funeral for a pet, and do what feels right for you.

• Create a legacy. Preparing a memorial, planting a tree in memory of your pet, compiling a photo album or scrapbook, or otherwise sharing the memories you enjoyed with your pet, can create a legacy to celebrate the life of your animal companion.

• Look after yourself. The stress of losing a pet can quickly deplete your energy and emotional reserves. Looking after your physical and emotional needs will help you get through this difficult time. Eat a healthy diet, get plenty of sleep, and exercise regularly to release endorphins and help boost your mood.

• If you have other pets, try to maintain your normal routine. Surviving pets can also experience loss when a pet dies, or they may become distressed by your sorrow. Maintaining their daily routines, or even increasing exercise and play times, will not only benefit the surviving pets but may also help to elevate your outlook too.

If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of

humans.

Happy New Year! 2013 has been a great year. I hope everyone enjoyed some time off and had a chance to celebrate with family and friends. I expect this year to be as busy as the last as we continue to work to Build Alberta and deliver on the promises that we made to you.

Southwest Calgary Ring RoadI was pleased the Tsuu T’ina First Nation voted to accept the tentative agreement for the Southwest Ring Road in October. This agreement is of a great benefit to the people of the Nation, for Calgarians, and for all Albertans. On November 27 Chief Whitney, Premier Redford and I signed the final agreement clearing the way for Government of Canada approval and thereafter the construction of the final section of the Calgary Ring Road.Completing the ring road is an investment in the safe, efficient movement of people and goods in and around Calgary. The full agreement can be found at http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/2480.htm.

Access to Stoney TrailI have questions from residents of Cranston and McKenzie Lake regarding access to and from Southeast Stoney Trail. To understand this requires some knowledge of the history of the development of the area. It goes back to the time of Premier Lougheed’s government who created Fish Creek Park. When that happened the city changed the route of Deerfoot Trail from the current Bow Bottom Trail alignment to where the Deerfoot is today. At that point the Deerfoot was built too close to the river to allow for a full interchange as part of the ring road. This is consistent with the original subdivision plans for Cranston and McKenzie Lake approved by the City of Calgary in 1998 and 1992, respectively. This was included in the original approvals of Cranston and Lake McKenzie. If you bought a home in these areas you should have been informed of these plans.

The ring road is designed to be a freeway which requires vehicles to enter and exit the road at highway speed. This

requires a minimum of 2 km and an ideal distance of 2 miles between all turns interchanges so that there is adequate distance for safe weaving between interchanges. Weaving means changing of lanes from the far left to far right and back so that vehicles can enter and exit. The Deerfoot is only 1.2 km from the bridge between Cranston and McKenzie Lake making an all turns interchange unsafe.

At one point no bridge was planned and both communities were to have only right in and right out access (one turn movement.) Since then the bridge built today was added allowing for the two turn movements included with SE Stoney Trail. Public meetings when I was on council were held to further inform area residents and to get advice on which turn movements were the highest priority. Construction plans were made with this information.

Health Link AlbertaHealth Link Alberta is here to support Albertans in managing their own health. The result is a more knowledgeable public, fewer hospital visits, and healthier communities. Whether you’re calling for yourself or a loved one, Registered Nurses at Health Link Alberta will assess your symptoms and determine the most appropriate care. Anyone in Calgary with a health question or concern can call (403)943-5463 (LINK) or at [email protected].

MLA for a Day ProgramThe MLA for a Day program took place on May 6th and 7th this year. It was a pleasure to have Tyler Van Vliet and Kristofer Watson from Calgary-Hays join me in Edmonton for the MLA for a Day program this year. The goal of this program is to develop a greater understanding of my role and responsibilities as an MLA, and I was impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm for government and all of the questions that they had.
