TA urges domestic switchTourism Australia has

launched a new domestic tourism campaign, suggesting that Australian families considering an overseas holiday should instead consider staying closer to home.

The promotion is based on new research which found parents and children rated a beach holiday taken in Australia “significantly higher” than time spent on the sand abroad.

“With this campaign we aim to remind Australians that the benefits they most want from a family holiday - things like safety, quality time, freedom and space - are all available right here in our own country, at the beach,” said

TA md Andrew McEvoy. The research saw respondents

rate beach holidays in 15 categories including swimming, relaxing, fishing, playing beach games and exploring rock pools.

In 13 of the 15 categories local beach breaks were rated more highly than those taken overseas.

Tourism Australia is working with a range of partners on the campaign including the states and territories as well as Flight Centre and the AOT Group.

McEvoy said that families represented the largest domestic tourism segment both in terms of numbers and spending, having grown over 6% in the last year versus just 1% growth in domestic tourism as a whole.

DFAT Egypt updateThe Department of Foreign

Affairs and Trade has reissued its travel advice for Egypt, adding more information on “violent protests in Alexandria and Cairo”.

Australians who remain in the country are being told to avoid all demonstrations, protests and large crowds.

Quest MEL AirportmelBourNe Airport will meet

extended stay accommodation demand through the addition of a Quest Serviced Apartment hotel, to be built within the airport’s business park precinct.

Announced this morning by MEL ceo Chris Woodruff, the property would aim to cater for companies which had operations at the airport or doing business with airport or aviation-related companies at Melbourne Airport.

The five-storey 97-apartment hotel is slated to open in Oct 2014, and will be located on the corner of South Centre Road and Annandale Road.

Quest’s Andrew Weisz said the investment by Melbourne Airport to deliver the purpose-built property was “further proof that there is a strong need for quality business accommodation”.

Travel Associates set for growthWesTerN Australian

travel group Travel Associates Australia (TAA) has flagged a significant expansion of its operation, which was established 12 years ago and now has a network of around 25 consultants across the state.

The group describes its members as ‘Associates’ and provides comprehensive administrative, training and sales support, according to managing director Russell Brown.

Part of the Travelscene American Express network, Travel Associates Australia is not to be confused with Flight Centre’s boutique Travel Associates brand,

which currently has 36 agencies across the country.

TAA is another home-based model, with Brown saying “working under the TAA umbrella means our Associates can focus on what they do best - selling travel and managing clients’ travel portfolios.”

Travel Associates also offers a variety of options, ranging from full assistance in setting up at home through to providing professional premises for those who prefer to work within an office environment.

Brown said that there’s also flexibility in the way Associates structure their business, with the directors “happy to discuss retainer/commission splits for those still a little unsure on making a 100% change to a full Associate”.

He claimed that TAA Associates regularly achieve “among the highest salaries within the travel industry,” while remaining their own boss.

The national expansion, which has launched with a new website and logo (pictured above) is set for a rollout over the next 12-18 months, and TAA says it’s also embarking on a business acquisition trail, actively seeking out smaller agencies keen to either realise their assets or enter into a joint venture.

BrisBANe’s Pullman hotel in King George Square has joined the royal baby frenzy by renaming its Presidential Suite as the Prince George Suite.

GM Grant Parnell said the former “presidential” title had “seemed a little disconnected to the hotel’s name, which already has a monarchical connection to King George V.

“The arrival of Prince George as the newest member of the royal family this week has provided us with the perfect excuse to bestow a fresh new title on our favourite suite to commemorate this special occasion in royal style,” he said.

And furthering the excitement, any guest who books on the hotel’s Executive Club floor this Jul and Aug will receive a complimentary upgrade to experience the suite, on a first-in-best-dressed basis.

Rates start at $299 for Executive Club rooms, while the Prince George Suite is available for the “princely sum” of $499 - more info 07 3229 9111.

ANd youth travel specialist Topdeck has also joined the fun by offering a 15% discount for pax named George or Georgina.

China Southern ready for TWOV influx

ForeiGN nationals flying with China Southern on the ‘Canton Route’ transiting in Guangzhou Baiyun Int’l Airport under the 72-hour visa free period (TD Tue) will be provided with special services by the airline at the airport.

CZ expects over half-a-million of its passengers will transit in CAN under the 72-hour Travel without Visa (TWOV) policy, which comes into effect this week, from Thu.

In anticipation of demand, the SkyTeam carrier has specifically designed passenger services and site protection processes for TWOV passengers, creating an integrated counter advisory post which will be manned by five English speaking staff “to provide the finest in professional customer services.”

“During the process of internalisation, a flexible TWOV policy is one of the key driving factors in the competitiveness of China Southern’s Guangzhou hub,” the carrier said last week.

Hostelworld changes under fireThe Victorian Tourism Industry

Council has slammed contractual changes made by backpacker specialists Hostelworld to the way it handles online bookings.

The group says the proposed changes will “severely limit” a partners autonomy and control over their business.

Chief executive Dianne Smith said despite a long-standing pact with the tourism industry, the latest move by Hostelworld was made without consultation.

Changes that will be adopted include; requiring operators to

commit to compete price and availability parity on stock listed on their own websites and that of hostelworld.com; refrainment from marketing & communicating directly with guests who book via the online channel; refunding the difference in price to guests who paid more than an advertised room rate; and entitlement to use a property name in online marketing.

David Fitzpatrick from Backpacker accom provider Base said the changes will affect the way business is done in a very negative manner.

He said operators have to be allowed some autonomy and urged all accom providers who use Hostelworld “to carefully consider their contracts.”

FJ to lease ATR 72-600FiJi Airways’ subsidiary Pacific

Sun has inked a Letter of Intent to lease a 68-seat ATR 72-600 turbo-prop aircraft for 12 years from Singapore-based Avation PLC.

Pacific Sun expects to take delivery of the ATR 72-600 in Apr, operating it on domestic and regional (Pacific Island) routes and allowing for an increase in frequency of flights.

Currently the Fijian carrier’s fleet is comprised of two ATR 42-500 and three DHC Havilland Twin Otter aircraft.

“With the growth in domestic and regional traffic experienced in the past years and a restructure of Pacific Sun’s operations under the leadership of gm Shaenaz Voss now complete, the time is now right for the airline to expand its fleet,” Pacific Sun chairman Nalin Patel commented.

Patel said the plane will provide a boost for travel between Nadi, Suva and Labasa, as well as entice further travel and trade between Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga.

“While we look forward to announcing what our schedules will look like, we can safely say that the increased capacity and frequency will allow us to offer more convenient services with even better connectivity opportunities with Fiji Airways’ international schedules,” he said.

MONA Social appeal The opening of Hobart’s

Museum of Old and New Art in Jan 2011 has seen the Tasmanian capital’s status as a preferred holiday destination spike 2.5% among ‘Socially Aware’ Aussies, Roy Morgan Research reports.

Socially Aware Australians (SAA) are more likely than other segments to sample a city experience while on holiday, such as dining, cultural events, historical sites, museums, parks and gardens.

To the year ending Jun 2013, 13.5% of SAA said they would like to take a holiday in Hobart in the next two years.

That’s five percentage points above the overall preference by Aussies to visit Hobart.

Melbourne and Sydney remain the top preferred domestic holiday destinations among SAA., with Hobart now in 4th position.

“In a shrinking or static market such as domestic tourism, it’s vital that marketers pick a winning strategy – and be willing to disrupt convention by injecting something big, brave and new into the mix,” said Roy Morgan Research ceo Michele Levine.
