Harvard and SunEthanol Inc announcecollaboration to advance biofuelsresearch
Harvard University’s Office ofTechnology Development andSunEthanol Inc, a biofuels technologycompany, have entered into a newresearch collaboration agreement tofurther advance a promising approachfor deriving ethanol from biomass.Under the collaboration, Harvard
Medical School researchers will workto develop new genetic strains of aproprietary natural bacterium thatSunEthanol is using to convertcellulose into ethanol. SunEthanol isdeveloping the Q Microbe – which amember of its team discovered nearthe Quabbin Reservoir in CentralMassachusetts – to produce ethanolfrom a variety of plentiful biomassfeedstocks, including switchgrass,corn stover, wheat straw, sugar canebagasse, and wood pulp. Importantly,none of these sources of biomasswould be diverted from the foodsupply.

INEOS Silicas and PQ Group agree tocombine
On 2 Jul 2008, following clearance bythe competition authorities, INEOSannounced that it has completed theagreement to combine INEOS Silicasand PQ Corp, the speciality chemicalcompany owned by The CarlyleGroup. The Carlyle Group will hold a60% share and INEOS Capital theremaining 40% of the new company.The new company is to be called PQCorp. It will be a global producer ofspeciality inorganic chemicals,catalysts, and engineered glassproducts and is expected to havesales of around $1 bn/y. Mike Boyce,will assume responsibility asChairman and Chief Executive Officer.This announcement follows anagreement made between the twocompanies on the 11 Oct 2007.Operating under single ownershippresents both businesses with newopportunities for innovation andgrowth that will provide significantcustomer benefit.
