CONGRATULATIONS TO MCKENZIE SWINBURNE who competed against 54 other secondary school students recently in the 2019 Chess Power Champions Trophy – Open Division as part of the Chess Power National Teams and Individuals Chess Championship held on the 19th October in Christchurch.

It was a long intense day of nine rounds of competition, however Mckenzie persevered to become the Chess Power Female Open Champion for 2019. This is well deserved as she has worked so hard over the last year to place in the regional and school tournaments. Well done McKenzie!

SUNSCREEN AWARENESS AND USE Look for sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30+, plus water resistance and broad-spectrum protection. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside. Apply plenty – about one teaspoonful (5ml) for each arm, each leg, your back, your front and your face (which includes your neck and ears). That adds up to about 35ml for a full-body application. Ignore “once-a-day” claims. Sunscreen should be reapplied often – every two hours you’re outside. Mopping up sweat or towelling dry reduces protection: apply another coat of sunscreen immediately. Remember – a sunscreen is only one part of your defence against UV radiation. The New Zealand Dermatological Society also recommends you cover up with suitable clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. When the sun’s rays are most intense (between 10am and 4pm September to April or when the Ultraviolet Index (UVI) is greater than three) it’s also a good idea to limit your time in the sun. An SPF15 sunscreen that’s properly applied is meant to give you 15 times the protection you’d get with unprotected skin. So if you were outside in the sort of sun that burns unprotected skin:

For 10 minutes, then SPF15 would give you 150 minutes of protection For SPF30 sunscreen that time would extend to 300 minutes And for SPF50 it would be 500 minutes.

That’s the theory. These times vary from person to person because of skin type, activities (such as heavy exercise or swimming) and how well the sunscreen is applied. No matter how high the SPF, any sunscreen should be reapplied regularly – every 2 hours you’re in the sun. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays: SPF15 blocks 93% of UVB, SPF30 blocks 97%, and SPF50 blocks 98%.

Dear Parent/Caregiver

RE: JPC ITINERANT MUSIC SCHEME: 2020

Students attending John Paul College are fortunate to benefit from the Itinerant Music Scheme. This scheme allows students to learn musical instruments/vocals during the school day for a discounted price.

The cost of most lessons is $85 per term. This fee assists the school to pay itinerant music teacher salaries and also includes a $25 fee which pays for photocopying, purchase of sheet music, instrumental repairs etc

We offer the following instrumental lessons at John Paul College:

Piano/keyboard (note: piano lessons are $12.50 a lesson) Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass Brass – trumpet, trombone Wind – flute, clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor, & baritone) Guitar – acoustic (including Classical), electric guitar, & bass guitar Drum Kit Vocals – soprano, alto, tenor, & bass

If the instrument you are interested in is not listed above please enquire by sending me an email

It is recommended that if your son/daughter takes instrumental/vocal lessons at school, they also join a music extra-curricular ensemble which usually runs after school and at lunchtimes in the John Paul College Music Department. Students can audition (or be recommended by their instrumental/vocal teachers) for the following:

Jazz Band Concert Band Choir String Ensemble Rock Bands (resources and band room available)

The John Paul College Jazz Band has gone from strength to strength over the past few years where we have achieved considerable success in local competitions and events. The Music Department’s goal is to build on this success with more students taking woodwind and brass lessons, and explore the possibility of taking the John Paul College Jazz Band/Concert Band to compete in more events in the future. When choosing an instrument, please consider the possibility of your son/daughter learning one of these amazing instruments and getting involved with the Jazz Band/Concert Band. We need more students to take clarinet and flute lessons especially, but also need trumpet, trombone and tenor saxophone students.

If your son/daughter is interested in learning an instrument please fill out the slip below as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as spaces fill up very quickly. If you have any further questions about the Music Itinerant Scheme, please email me at [email protected]

Yours faithfully
