Dear Parents/ Caregivers Tēnā koutou katoa, ni hao, konnichiwa, good afternoon PROHIBITION ON CELL PHONES Please note that students are not permitted to contact parents to collect them if they are feeling unwell. Students must present to the school nurse, who will assess them and call parents to collect as necessary and duly sign them out of school, which is a health and safety requirement by law, to ensure all students are accounted for at all times. ACADEMIC AUDIT: YEARS 11-13 At present Deans, Faculty Heads and teachers are identifying students at risk of the following: 1. Insufficient credits to pass NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 2. Not achieving University Entrance 3. Insufficient literacy and numeracy credits 4. Not handing in assignments or seeking reassessment opportunities If you are contacted by school staff on any of the above, please give them your full cooperation and support. It is in your child’s best interests. SCHOOL FEES & ATTENDANCE DUES It is important to note that there are two distinct charges to parents whose children attend John Paul College. Attendance dues are charged by the Hamilton Diocese, largely for buildings, while the General Activity Contribution contributes to resources and running costs of the school. The Hamilton Diocese have spent well over $10million on buildings for JPC over the last decade, including the new technology block, costing $3.3million, which has been greatly appreciated by staff and students. We are also excited that the new Performing Arts Centre, at a cost of $4million, is progressing well, with the Music and Dance suites now complete and already in use. This weekend saw the 1st XV playing WHHS for a home semi-final and the U14’s playing Aquinas to cement there spot in the semi-finals.

U14’s played away at Aquinas and were up against it in player depth only having the bare 15 to travel and play the game. It was a game of missed opportunities, but some lucky bounces also. The result was a 17 all draw. Before this game JPC were sitting top of the table with a 1 point advantage over second placed Whakatane. JPC will now go to next week’s game against RBHS needing to win to secure a home semi-final.

The 1st XV was up against local rivals WHHS in what is always a tough battle. With a home semi up for grabs it was all in front of the JPC team. JPC has been unlucky with injuries this season and added to this list was Captain Patrick Gillam and inspirational back Haydn Benge. Daniel Frost-Jones was the stand in captain and he led a first half performance that showed the dominance of JPC. They out played, out muscled and outscored WHHS to take a 27 – 7 lead into half time. WHHS had been reduced to 14 men midway through the 1st half with a player sent off. The half time talk was direct and the game plan set out. However it seemed to unravel and WHHS rallied. WHHS scored first to take the score to 27 – 12 and were playing with their tails up. JPC then scored another try and it looked as if they would kick on and put WHHS to the sword. The boys’ from WHHS had other ideas and grew an extra arm and leg and played with confidence to score another two tries. With JPC reduced down to 13 men due to two yellow cards, the last ten minutes were nail biting. JPC managed to defend their line and get a 34 – 24 win and secure a home semi-final this weekend. U14’s JPC v RBHS 10.30am @ JPC 1st XV JPC v Tauhara Midday @ JPC Please come along and support the two teams in their quest to make the finals for their respective divisions.
