Dear�Parish�Family- It�has�been�wonderful�to�see�so�many�families�returning�to�the�practice�of�the�faith�through�regular�Sunday�Mass�attendance.��This�is�very�important�to�the�development�of�children�spiritually.�� Last�weekend�Pope�Francis�was�in�Latvia�and�he�spoke,�once�again,�about�the�dangers�of�making�the�faith�into�a�Museum�of�Memories.��Calling�it�recurring�danger�for�all�who�call�themselves�Christians,�he�said�“We�can�take�what�gives�us�our�very�identity�and�turn�it�into�a�curio�from�the�past,�a�tourist�attraction,�a�museum�piece�that�recalls�the�achievements�of�earlier�age.��We�can�stop�feeling�like�‘resident’�Christians�and�become�tourists.”��He�urged�his�listeners�to�become�engaged�in�their�faith�and�to�stop�treating�it�as�a�lovely�object�from�the�past. I�have�to�admit�I�find�it�frustrating�and�curiously�strange�that�some�people�think�it�is�obligatory�to�drop�their�chil-dren�off�for�Religious�Education�Classes�but�not�obligatory�to�attend�Mass.��I�wonder�how�they�came�by�this�twist-ed�backward�thinking?��Mass�attendance�has�always�and�everywhere�in�every�age�been�obligatory.��Religious�Educa-tion�Classes�are�totally�voluntary,�there�is�no�Biblical�obligation,�no�obligation�found�in�Church�law,�precept�or�teaching.��Parishes�provide�supplemental�assistance,�voluntarily,�to�assist�parents�in�training�their�children�in�the�PRACTICE�of�the�faith.��Religious�Education�is�not�a�Museum�of�Memories. When�a�family�approaches�the�Church�to�have�their�child�baptized�they�are�required�to�make�a�promise-�solemn�promise�before�God�and�the�Church-,�publically�and�out�loud�on�the�day�of�Baptism.��The�Rite�says,�“You�have�asked�to�have�your�child�baptized.��In�doing�so�yyou�are�aaccepting�the�responsibility�of�training�them�in�the�practice�of�the�faith.��It�will�be�yyour�dduty�to�bring�them�up�to�keep�God’s�Commandments�as�Christ�has�taught�us,�by�loving�God�and�our�neighbor.�Do�you�clearly�understand�what�you�are�undertaking?” The�Rite�does�not�ask�to�raise�the�child�as�a�tourist�with�lifelong�membership�in�the�Museum�of�Memories.��No,�on�the�contrary,�parents�commit�themselves�freely�to�be�responsible�to�raise�their�children�in�the�practice�of�the�faith.��The�very�first�practice�is�keeping�the�Sabbath�Holy�(3rd�Commandment)�by�Mass�attendance.��The�Sabbath�Obliga-tion�is�the�starting�point�for�the�Christian�life.�
A�parent�asked�me,�“If�you�think�it’s�so�important�for�my�child�to�attend�Mass�why�don’t�you�have�one�on�Tuesday�night�when�he’s�here?”��First,�it�is�important�for�the�whole�family,�not�just�the�child.��Mass�is�for�the�good�of�every�Soul.�Secondly,�it�is�not�my�opinion,�it�is�the�Teaching�of�God�and�His�Church.��Third,�the�Lord�Jesus�Christ,�the�second�person�of�the�Most�Holy�Trinity,�rose�from�the�Dead�on�Sunday�Morning,�not�Tuesday�evening.��From�the�time�of�the�Resurrection�in�33�A.D.�until�our�time�the�Church�prays�together�as�a�Community�of�Faith�on�the�Day�of�the�Resurrection,�Sunday.��It�is�the�only�day�we�are�obligated�to�come�together.��We�read�in�the�Catechism�of�the�Catholic�Church,�“The�center�of�the�Liturgical�season�is�Sunday�which�is�the�foundation�and�kernel�of�the�entire�liturgical�year�and�has�its�culmination�in�the�annual�celebration�of�Easter,�the�feast�of�Feasts”
One�of�the�works�of�Mercy�is�to�instruct�the�ignorant�and�there�is�a�lot�of�ignorance�when�it�comes�to�the�life�of�Faith.��A�Catechist�shared�with�me�that�a�student�told�him,�“My�parents�said�you�are�a�liar,�Jesus�is�not�God�and�never�was”.��I�think�this�little�incident�sums�up�the�problems�nicely.��One�has�to�ask�why�a�parent�would�send�their�children�to�a�program�teaching�about�a�religion�they�oppose�or�don’t�believe?��If�they�believe�Jesus�is�not�God,�there�is�no�point�to�their�sending�their�children�to�any�religious�program�or�church.�
The�materialism�of�our�age�is�a�terrible�scourge,�people�live�as�if�this�life�will�go�on�forever.��They�live�as�if�there�will�be�no�accounting,�no�responsibility.��St.�Paul�tells�us�in�the�letter�to�the�Corinthians,�“For�we�must�all�appear�before�the�judgement�seat�of�Christ,�so�that�each�one�may�receive�recompense,�according�to�what�he�did�in�the�body,�whether�good�or�evil.”

The�truth,�the�truth�the�world�tries�hard�to�ignore,�is�we�will�all�die.��When�we�die,�God�will�demand�an�accounting.��Christians�are�called�to�consider�this�teaching.��We�must�be�ready�to�appear�before�that�judgement�seat.��We�ought�to�make�confession�a�regular�part�of�the�practice�of�our�faith,�to�help�us�grow�in�holiness.�� Last�weekend�we�received�handwritten�messages�placed�all�over�the�Church�and�in�the�collection�basket�from�an�Evangelical�Protestant�group,�so�word�must�be�spreading�that�St.�Aloysius�has�gotten�serious�about�getting�Catho-lics�back�to�Mass.��As�a�priest�I�know�we�are�doing�things�right�when�the�Evangelicals�and�Lighthouse�Religious�groups�start�making�attacks.��They�view�us�as�the�“Great�Satan”�and�target�Catholics.��In�recent�years�their�tactics�have�become�more�brazen,�they�attend�our�Parishes�and�report�back�to�their�faith�groups.��When�those�who�claim�to�be�a�sworn�enemy�come�after�us,�I�know�we�are�doing�something�right!�� I�have�a�message�for�them,�there�is�indeed�a�need�for�conversion,�I�invite�you�to�convert�to�the�One�True�Catholic�and�Apostolic�Church�founded�by�Jesus�Christ�and�entrusted�to�the�Apostles�and�their�successors.��The�Catholic�Church�was�founded�by�Christ�himself�on�the�shores�of�the�Sea�of�Galilee.��Your�worship�group�was�founded�by�a�man�or�woman,�you�trace�your�founding�to�a�human�being,�we�trace�ours�to�the�Son�of�God.��Jesus�Christ,�the�Eter-nal�Son�of�the�Eternal�Father�founded�the�Catholic�Faith�as�the�sole�means�to�Salvation.��I�know�you�say�your�Church�was�founded�by�Jesus�but�you�mean�that�metaphorically,�you�can�date�your�Church�beginning�to�a�specific�period�of�time�after�the�year�1000,�more�likely�in�the�last�100�years,�to�a�human�being�who�started�it�as�your�found-er.��I�mean�it�literally�we�can�trace�all�our�Bishops�in�an�unbroken�line�of�succession�to�the�Apostles,�finally�to�St.�Peter�and�his�successor�whom�we�call�the�Pope�to�whom�Jesus�entrusted�the�faith�until�he�comes�again�in�glory. Based�upon�the�number�and�kind�of�messages�they�left,�mostly�around�our�Sacred�Images,�they�were�pretty�upset�and�wound�up�about�images.��They�left�quotes�from�the�Jewish�Law�Book�of�the�Old�Testament�Leviticus.��I�know�they�do�not�follow�all�the�precepts�of�Leviticus�which�also�prohibit�eating�pork,�times�when�women�are�impure,�the�cleaning�of�vessels,�etc…�lots�of�laws�even�they�don’t�follow.��However�the�Old�Testament�prohibition�on�images�is�one�law�they�like�to�harp�on�and�get�worked�up�about�with�Catholics.�This�is�laughable�and�sad,�not�to�mention�poor�theologically. Why�do�we�allow�images�in�violation�of�Jewish�Legal�Practice?��Well�first�off�we�are�not�Jewish.��The�simple�answer�is�this;�The�Word�became�flesh�(the�Incarnation)�in�the�Womb�of�the�Virgin�Mary�and�was�born�in�time,�Jesus�Christ,�he�became�the�Icon�(Image)�of�the�Invisible�God.�God�showed�himself�to�us�in�the�face�of�Jesus.�God�chose�to�make�himself�visible�to�us�in�the�Second�Person�of�the�Most�Holy�Trinity,�Jesus�Christ.��Christ�became�the�living�Icon,�or�image.��The�Iconoclastic�Controversy�was�settled�by�the�Whole�Church,�East�and�West,�first�at�the�Council�of�Chalcedon�in�451�AD�and�again�at�the�Second�Council�of�Nicea�in�787�AD.�The�Catechism�of�the�Catholic�Church�teaches�us,�“The�image�of�Christ�is�the�liturgical�icon�par�excellence.�Other�images,�representations�of�Our�Lady�and�of�the�Saints,�signify�Christ�who�is�glorified�in�them.�They�proclaim�the�same�Gospel�message�that�Sacred�Scripture�communicates�by�the�word�and�they�help�to�awaken�and�nourish�the�faith�of�believers.”� Those�non-Catholics�who�object�usually�have�images�in�their�homes�or�churches,�such�as�a�cross�–�which�is�an����Image.��Or�a�fish,�ICHTHYS�–�which�is�an�image,�photographs�or�paintings�of�relatives�&�friends�or�the�founder�of�their�Church�or�their�pastor–�which�are�images-�and�lots�of�others�too,�they�just�don’t�like�it�when�we�have�them!�� So�get�to�Mass,�practice�your�faith�and�become�strong�in�your�faith.�Finally�let�me�offer�some�words�for�reflection.�We�talk�a�lot�about�various�forms�of�child�abuse�and�rightly�so.��We�find�child�abuse�disgusting.�But�when�a�child’s�faith�life�is�neglected,�is�this�not�a�form�of�spiritual�child�abuse?��Jesus,�in�Mark’s�Gospel,�tells�us,�“let�the�Children�come�to�me�and�do�not�hinder�them.”��Let�us�together�listen�to�the�Lord�and�find�effective�ways�to�bring�our�chil-dren�to�Jesus�who�is�our�life�and�our�salvation.
