Spring 2015

From the President’s

Desk…..

Many of your current JMH Alumni

Association Trustees have volunteered

on the committee between ten and

twenty years or more. Every year we

pride ourselves in publishing an annual

Newsletter for you, the Alumnae. Our

yearly newsletter is designed to keep

you informed of Class Reunions, class-

mate updates, events and death notices.

This past year, the Scholarship Endow-

ment fund had a good year due to the

stock market returns, brick sales and

some very generous donations from

alumni directed to the students. How-

ever, we noticed that the donations

toward our Operating Fund decreased

drastically, making it the lowest ever

in the past 10 years. The actual num-

ber of donors was less than 1.5% of the

18,000 receiving newsletters.

We have never charged for our publi-

cation or required a membership fee,

nor do we wish to do so. We are, how-

ever, counting on you to consider

sending in any donation to keep your

newsletter coming. Please take the

time to support your alumni associa-

occupy the north end (far right). Only a

few more things need to be completed on

the exterior—in this picture the Eagles will

be positioned around the center door, the

Some of the original medallions are placed

between the first and second floor at the

south end of the building. Some medal-

lions also have been installed in the Alum-

ni Hall by the cafetorium and gym.

the building—see page 16.

The building ...

The new John Marshall High building is

still on schedule and will be open in Au-

each day putting the finishing touches on

the building. Many of the rooms have

been painted and the lights installed.

Currently wall mounted cabinets are

being installed.

Educational trends and programs have

changed throughout the district in the

past few years. Everyone has wondered

what the new JMH will hold for our stu-

dents. Currently the plan is for the school

to consist of three small schools. There

will be a school of Information Technol-

school will

have its own

the district.

Inside this issue:

Welcome to Mrs. Tiffiany James, Principal

Mr. Byron Hopkins, principal for the

2013-2014, decided to take a posi-

tion in the Akron City Schools. Our

loss, their gain….

However, our

gain is just as

impressive. Mrs.

Tiffiany James

was named to

head the 2014-

2015 school

year. She is no

stranger to JMH, as she was the

9th/10th grade Unit Principal last

year.

Mrs. James grew up in Cleveland

Hts., primarily attending Cleveland

Hts. High but then graduating from

Solon High School. She attended

Ohio University, earning a Bache-

lor’s degree in Biology / Pre Med

Naturally, as Principal, her main

goals mirror the district’s—

improving the graduation and attend-

ance rate. She aims to bring JMH

back to “what it was”! Much focus is

on the school culture—bringing in

new ideas and implementing differen-

tiated instruction.

Hopefully, she will be able to contin-

ue as a Principal at the new JMH.

There will be three principals, in

charge of the 3 schools—but there

needs to be some continuity with the

transition. We’re hoping she will be

part of the plan.

She is married with two children of

her own and two ‘inherited’ from her

second marriage—their ages are 15,

16, 17 and 22!

Welcome to the family!

She also attended Cleveland State

University earning a second BS in

Secondary Education with a concen-

tration in Science. Her education con-

tinued at the University of Phoenix,

earning a Masters in Curriculum &

Development and then a second Mas-

ters from Ashland in Administration

Education. In her ‘spare’ time she is

working on her Doctorate from the

University of Phoenix—with a Con-

centration in Technology Integration.

She began her teaching career in

1998 at East Tech and for five years

taught Physical Science, Biology,

Chemistry, and AP Chemistry. From

2003-2013 she worked in the Twins-

burg schools, same focus on Biology,

Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and

Chemistry in the Community. Then

last year she became a ‘Lawyer’.

The Mosaic, the one that was created in the early 2000s at the

end of the center hall, is hopefully going to be recreated in the

new building. If you worked on it originally or you might be

available to recreate it—please let us know ASAP!

Alumni in the News

Stanley Drayton, 6/89, just accepted a position as the running

backs coach with the Chicago Bears. Stanley spent the last 4

years at Ohio State under Coach Urban Meyer, helping propel

the Buckeyes to the National Championship. He was in charge

of the running backs and recruiting from Cleveland. Stan attend-

ed Alleghany College and was 3 time All American running

back. He had been an assistant coach under Meyer in Florida and

at several other universities. Stan also coached the running backs

at Green Bay

Ralph Pfingston, 6/58, FAC, continues to present programs

throughout the area on the Ravenna Arsenal, Puritas Springs, and

Rails Thru West Park. Check with westparkhistory.org for

updates on his scheduled talks.

West Park Historical Society www.WestParkHistory.org

The JMHAA and the WPHS are intertwined in so many ways:

Trustees from JMH serve/have served on their board; Ralph

Pfingsten, 6/58 & FAC, has coordinated activities and books

with both organizations, and we have paired up on some commu-

nity events.

The unveiling of the Ohio Historical Marker, commemorating

Puritas Springs Park, is tentatively scheduled for August 30,

2015. Details of the exact time and location will be on their

webpage.

Last summer, the Alumni Association shared a tent at Fairview

Park’s Summerfest. We may return this year—it is scheduled for

July, but check our webpage for details!

A Familiar Face

While we usually don’t focus on any ‘one’ alumnae's passing,

this one is special—as many will remember him for his many

years of being seen about the West Park neighborhood.

His name was Robert Jankulov, a 6/69 graduate, but we all

knew him as ‘Popcorn’. Sadly, he passed away last March 29.

Excerpts from his obit: “A popular and unique individual, Pop-

corn was a familiar sight for over 30 years in Cleveland's West

Park area. An avid bike rider, Robert was often seen riding his

bike throughout the far west side neighborhoods. Robert was so

well known for his bike riding, that the school newspaper fea-

tured him in an article entitled "Bike traveling senior peddles

many a mile." A Cleveland policeman was quoted as saying "We

see that kid on his bike everywhere." Since graduation, he

worked for the Cleveland Water Department until early retire-

ment in 1992 due to many health issues. Even in retirement, he

continued riding his

colorful bike. He later

switched to a four

wheel motorized cart

and regularly traveled

around Lorain & W.

140th St. In 2002,

when asked about his

future plans, his re-

sponse was always the

same "Keep Going!"

Tentative Alumni Open House

& Volunteers Needed

Once the dust settles and students are in the new

building, we hope to coordinate an Open House/

Dedication Program with the School District for a

Saturday in September 2015. At newsletter press

time, everything is still up in the air. Once we have a

confirmed date, it will be posted on our web page,

announced to the Facebook Alumni group, added on

our voice mail, and published in the Sun News. We

hope to have that date selected and announced by

July 1st, so please be sure to check back.

If you can spare an hour or two and volunteer to help

us out that day, please let us know. We will have

students as tour guides—after all—it is now their

home to share! Call the hotline 440-356-0249 or

email [email protected].

2013 Scholarship Recipients

News From the School!

Many personnel changes!

Retirees from the 2013-2014 school year were Gini (Sinclair)

Kolar, English, (also 6/72 grad), Dan McMillan, CISCO, (also

6/71 grad), and Lorie Hein, Phys Ed. and two more!. This school

year, 2014-2015, (as of press time) JMH will lose two long time

faculty members - Bob Fast (also JMH 6/78 grad) Math/Union

Chair, and Michelle Franklin, English/Sr. Advisor/Radio Room.

At this time, we don’t know which of the remaining staff will be

at the new building—usually everyone needs to reapply for a

position at a school with new programs. With 3 ‘programs’ be-

ing proposed, who knows? There will be some continuity—as the

juniors and seniors will still participate in a ‘comprehensive’

program until their graduation.

Attendance Office Needs Volunteers The current JMH attendance officer supervises 5 schools

and would like some assistance in contacting students/

families to promote their attendance at school. JMH has a

fairly good attendance rate, but, with reminders to those

few, would hope to increase their time on task in order to

pass tests and graduate on time. As they say—’It takes a

village…’ There would be a script to follow—ie. if an

alumnus is calling to say — ‘We care, we want you to suc-

ceed, and have the opportunities we had. Please be sure to

attend school daily, get assistance with OGT test prep, and

never be afraid to ask for help.’ it would add a personal

touch and could make a difference! If you can assist, con-

Sports Update!

The 2014 Co-Ed Soccer team went undefeated during the regular

season before losing to John Hay in the Championship game.

Merima Veljak, in 3 seasons, scored 20 goals and won the All-

Star Senate Award. The 2014 Co-Ed Golf team were winners

as well—winning the City Championship. And of course, the

Girl’s Swim Team won the Senate Championship for the 18th

straight year. The girl’s Volleyball and Tennis teams were also

city champions this year too! Way to go teams!

Exchange Students

JMH has had several exchange students over the past few years.

This year, Sophia Regling, hails from Berlin, Germany.

At the JMH Senior Awards assembly last June, scholarships from

the Alumni Association were awarded to the following four sen-

iors:

Sabrina Pewitt received a $1000 scholarship.

She plans to attend the University of Akron with

a major in nursing. She hopes to become a neona-

tal nurse. Sabrina has received Honor Roll

Awards for every quarter during all four years of

high school. She graduated 8th/187 in her class

with a GPA of 4.2!

Her activities at JMH included Band, Choir, Visual Arts, and

intramurals. About 200 volunteer hours were earned at Fairview

Hospital during her last two years. She also worked at McDon-

ald’s her senior year.

Brian Mercado also received a $1000 scholarship.

He plans to attend Cornell University, majoring in

Civil Engineering. Brian graduated with a 3.5

GPA.

Brian’s activities included Newspaper Club, the

Golf, Wrestling and Baseball Teams, Junior ROTC

and Color Guard. He was also a member of NHS and served as

the President of the Senior class. He received Top Performer

Recognition in the Air Force Junior ROTC.

Jenny Le, $500 scholarship winner, plans to

attend CSU majoring in accounting. She grad-

uated 2nd/187 with a GPA of 4.5.

Jenny’s awards include High Honor Roll and

Attendance Awards for all four years. She

was a member of the Newspaper and Multi-

cultural Clubs, and the Kenyon College Sum-

mer Academic Partnership Program.

Amy Bazdar, also a $500 recipient, graduated

with a GPA of 3.8. She plans to attend the Uni-

versity of Akron. Amy would like to major in

the medical field, hoping to eventually work in

a neonatal unit of a hospital.

At JMH, she worked in the Radio room. She’s

also worked at Designs by Floral Images,

cleaning flowers and running errands, and has worked at the

Kamm’s Corners Marc’s in customer service.

SROKA SCHOLARSHIP

Steve Sroka, 1/62, is a proud member of

the JMH Hall of Fame. Since 1999, he

has returned yearly to present a scholar-

ship to a JMH student. The Sroka Schol-

arship Award Is presented to a Future

Teacher. The award goes to a student

who has demonstrated leadership, charac-

ter, service and outstanding scholarship.

This year’s recipient was Alysda Gates.

Congratulations!

More Good News! The endowment fund did well in the marketplace this year. We

were able to increase the scholarships for the 2015 grads, offer-

ing five $2,000 scholarships renewable for a second year.

As you can see your donations to the endowment fund, brick

purchases, and paver purchases are helping our students further

their education. Please donate and help us, help them!

not alone – there are 13 others, but there

are 19 lost – can’t confirm their status,

Are you a snowbird?

Please let us know—newsletters

don’t always get forwarded—so if

we know the dates you are away

from your main address—we can

send the news directly there.

Have an email address? We can

send you a .pdf copy after the mail-

ing and prevent lost or delayed

newsletters and save postage too!

The JMHAA &

Technology Today We’ve had our webpage www.jmhalumni.com for several years, but recent-

ly updated it and there are some changes.

We have had/still have an email address to contact us direct—

[email protected] There are other addresses to reach us with specifics -

as for reunions and direct to trustees (a trustee’s first name with the

@jmhalumni.com extension added.), but the info address will get the message

forwarded to the correct department.

We no longer have a message board—it didn’t allow US a quick response to

you if you had a question, as we never got a notice from the webpage—and to

be honest—we just didn’t monitor it the way it should have been—life got in

the way.

BUT we DO have a Facebook connection. It is much easier to access and

results in quicker responses from us AND from other grads’ inquiries. There

is one main group (over 3100 and growing) at

John Marshall High School Alumni Cleveland, Ohio

https://www.facebook.com/groups/34559262277/ This is the one we

consider the ‘Official JMH Alumni Association’ as we monitor it regularly.

We try to keep topics STRICTLY JMH related and don’t allow advertising,

political promotion, or inappropriate heated discussions (not censored, just

not allowing for personal attacks). There are other JMH Alumni pages out

there, some belong to our John Marshall, others have ties to the other 7 John

Marshall High Schools throughout the country. Many classes have set up

group pages as well—so be sure to search for your class year and JMH or ask

within the main group.

Our Merchandise Link—is now up and running! Check out our JMH E-

Store or type in http://www.ebay.com/usr/johnmarshallalumni . We are

able to accept Pay Pal / Credit Card payments! Merchandise ordering should

be a breeze with an improved response time. Be sure to check it out! We are

also trying to make it donation acceptable as well.

The unique aspect of our organization is that WE DO NOT CHARGE any

standard membership fee to belong to our organization or to have access to a

web page, WE OPERATE ON DONATIONS ONLY.

However there is one page out there that is not US and there are many of

OUR ALUMNI who have signed up for that page, hopefully as a temporary

member and not as a ‘paying member’.

BELOW ADDRESS IS NOT YOUR ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

http://johnmarshallhighschool.net/cleveland-oh/

This website has been created for ALL schools in the ENTIRE country. They

list the vital statistics for each city, building, nickname, colors; promote mer-

chandise (which is very generic) and may create yearbooks (if they have had

access to a copy), etc. There is a yearly membership fee or lifetime fee. This

company does NOT represent the JMH Alumni Association NOR YOUR

JMHS so if you might have an issue with THEM, we cannot address it.

Please be sure you are dealing with the correct JMH Alumni Association!

Marshall High School’s Web Page

For the past 15 years or so, JMH has

had a web page, some times on,

some times off. Well, it’s back on

again, attached to the Cleveland

Metropolitan Schools web site:

http://

www.clevelandmetroschools.org/

jmhs

It does include a calendar of events,

some reports of past events, and

some useful information, however, it

is not updated as it should be either.

We’re hoping we can convince the

school/district to make it current and

accurate so that alumni interested in

attending/participating/supporting

can do so on a regular basis.

‘OUR’ John Marshall is gone, but the new JMHS will incorporate several of its architectural elements. A new

feature, the Alumni Plaza, will be located on the Viola St. side, near the student entrance. Several original

granite steps will provide three rows of seating, with rows of red brick pavers interspersed between them. You

can leave your mark and become a permanent part of the new school. This is a great opportunity to pay tribute

to a past JMHS graduate, a teacher, yourself, or your family. Red pavers will be deeply engraved with your

name and class year, with lettering painted black. Funds raised by the sale will go to the John Marshall Endow-

ment fund, which is exclusively used for JMHS student scholarships.

Special Thank You to the Volunteers

While all Trustees put in time to attend monthly meetings, gener-

Alumni sponsored events, (and are also usually involved with their

own class reunion events), many of us work for the Alumni Asso-

ciation on a Weekly, if not DAILY basis. If it were not for their

dedication and multi-tasking, much of what you see yearly would

not be possible. There are others who assist regularly below.

Ken Tischler—mailing out merchandise, meeting with the design

team, communicating with the school, taking weekly photos of the

new building completion, liaison with the district; runs the AA!

Joyce Murphy—coordinates scholarship selection and Hall of

Fame activities

Doug Smorag—maintains financial records, participates in schol-

arship selection and Hall of Fame activities

Elaine Staley—maintains database, mails out donation receipts,

makes bank deposits, checks post office weekly, (swamped in

April- June!), participates with Hall of Fame selection, and Reun-

ion Handbook updating

database records by searching for new addresses when returns

come in, Reunion Handbook updating

Tom Thompson—web page redesign, maintenance, E-Store

Maria McKee—merchandise and brick sale pick up

Ray Vorell—merchandise sales, parade

ments of a reunion and/or write-ups/photos after a reunion,

checks database for duplicates, collects current sports information,

military records, maintains Hall of Fame nominations, selection of

HOF nominees and preparation for HOF ceremonies, verifies class

lists with yearbooks, grad lists, database

Are you a twin?

Do you know who the twins

were in your class?

Recently I came across my grandmother’s scrapbook. There

was a news clipping from probably about 1930—Almira school

had 8 sets of twins at that time. My father and uncle were in

that photo. So I asked on Facebook—how many twins can be

identified from the classes at JMH. Well, over 100 responses

were posted over the next few days, with only a few duplicates

being named. Yet I’m sure there are many more! There is one

set of triplets that has been identified. Are there more? Just

identical and fraternal sets—no ‘irish’ twins! I learned some-

thing new that day! Send in a note on your response form, iden-

tifying twins from your class or send to [email protected].

I’ll compile the list and we’ll post it on our web page! JG

We NEED You!

Please Bring us Your Talents,

Suggestions, Ideas!

Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm, except

for July/August. They last 1-1.5 hours max at Bethany Lutheran Church on

Triskett. We are looking forward to seeing you at our JMH Alumni Asso-

ciation meetings.

Currently the Trustees consist of grads from 1957-1984. We aren’t getting

any younger and therefore we need younger alums to step up to continue

our organization. We would love to have representation from all DEC-

ADES! We want to represent ALL JMH GRADS! Your individual talents

and skills are needed to ensure that this current Alumni Association can

continue and remain the best in the district.

Many responsibilities can be brief within a year, but assistance is needed

throughout. Some responsibilities of the JMHAA can be performed by an

individual living in another state or city, especially if you have internet &

email access. Not only do we need a reunion committees assistance with

updating class records, but we are trying to compile a list of all grads who

have served in the military; research individuals for possible induction into

the Hall of Fame; clip news articles related to current JMH students and

yet research newspaper archives for any past articles—in order to create a

digital scrapbook! Some positions are filled, some have recently been va-

cated, and yet others may soon be retiring, so a back-up person or assistant

is a necessity. Please join us: [email protected], or (440) 356-0249

We asked for Memorabilia earlier—

but if you just can’t part with yours yet—

please help us out!

Scan a play, choir, or orchestra program, or

any other printed document, save it as a .pdf

and attach it to an email.

Send to [email protected] We are

trying to digitize those memories and any

help from YOU would truly be appreciated!
