He has been a commit- ted political activist who was inspired to get involved by the horrors of the war in Iraq and the plight of the Palestinian people. This will be his first election. “I am standing as a candidate as I believe that this country needs real change. Fianna Fail and the Green Party’s disastrous policies have placed the burden of responsibility for the economic crisis on the shoulders of the ordinary men, women and children of Ireland. We desperately need a real alternative to challenge the political establishment that led us into this mess and which is forcing us into paying for a crisis created by the rich. That is why I am standing in this general election, to bring about real change through principled political representation in the Dail and people power on the streets – the pensioners last year showed us how to do it.” Fianna Fail, the bastion of government over seventy years, is facing political oblivion. But a Fine Gael dominated government led by Enda Kenny and propped up by the Labour Party will not deliver real change. This is why John Lyons and People Before Profit have joined the United Left Alliance, which includes Joe Higgins MEP and Richard Boyd Barrett, to offer a real alternative. James Connolly said "The great only appear great, because we are on our knees. Let us Arise". The people we were meant to look upon as the masters of financial wizardry have failed the people. They were the untouchables. Now we find that we have to pay for the greed of a few. It is time to call a halt by voting for a candidate from outside the political establishment. If elected, John Lyons’ priorities are to: Create a jobs initiative to stop emigration and provide employment. End the crisis in our hospitals - We need a prop- erly funded and resourced public health service free at the point of access. Reverse the cut to the minimum wage. Reverse the cuts to Dublin Bus routes - We need high quality public transport for Dublin city Re-use vacant NAMA properties for community purposes including pensioners’ clubs and youth facilities. Real help for those in difficulty with high mort- gages. New legislation to release people from life-long debt.
