One of the few good things coming about with the increasing difficulty of commuting north is that many people who live in the South County and commute north to their jobs every day are very interested in finding jobs closer to home. According to the latest (2015) data posted at onthe- map.ces.census.gov, over 19,000 people leave Morgan Hill to go to work each day. This is a tremendous talent pool for local businesses and organizations. The Morgan Hill Unified School district’s over 800 employees make it the single largest Morgan Hill based employer. Superintendent Steve Betando recently reported that recruiting for the 2018-19 school year has been easier than in other recent years specifically because teachers, administrators and other experienced staff are highly motivated to get off the highway and work closer to home. Hopefully this will be a reality for many of the rest of you who are trying to hire great people. Another bit of transportation related news is the ongoing evolution of California’s High Speed Rail project. This past year has seen a significant turnover in executive and lower level staff at the High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA). This new leadership recently rolled out a significantly different business plan with major implications for our south county area. The short version of the story for our area is that HSRA is now focusing on creating an electrified multi-track rail line from Gilroy to San Francisco with targeted operating speeds in the 110 mph range on tracks intendent to be shared with Caltrain and primarily within the existing Union Pacific/Caltrain rail right-of-way. Estimates of the required width of this right-of-way range from 60 to 100 feet depending upon engineering assumptions and ongoing negotiations between HSRA and Union Pacific (which owns the current tracks and right-of-way). We continue to participate in many of the meetings at which these matters are discussed and are working with HSRA to bring another open-forum discussion to Morgan Hill sometime in July or August. Transportation, housing availability and housing costs continue to be major concerns affecting business vitality in our region. We are doing what we can to be productive participants in the conversations and decisions which impact these areas. Please keep letting all of us here at your Chamber of Commerce know your thoughts on these topics and anything else of concern to your organization. Thank you for your membership, support and time.

John Horner, Chamber of Commerce President and CEO

Fortunately 2018 has been a good year so far for both the

Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce and the vast majority of our

members. The biggest business challenge we frequently hear

about is finding the people needed to meet expanding demand

for products and services. Not every organization finds itself

with this issue, but many of do. One of the few good things

coming about with the increasing difficulty of commuting north is that many people who

live in the South County and commute north to their jobs every day are very interested

in finding jobs closer to home. According to the latest (2015) data posted at onthe-

map.ces.census.gov, over 19,000 people leave Morgan Hill to go to work each day. This

is a tremendous talent pool for local businesses and organizations.

The Morgan Hill Unified School district’s over 800 employees make it the single largest

Morgan Hill based employer. Superintendent Steve Betando recently reported that

recruiting for the 2018-19 school year has been easier than in other recent years

specifically because teachers, administrators and other experienced staff are highly

motivated to get off the highway and work closer to home. Hopefully this will be a reality

for many of the rest of you who are trying to hire great people.

Another bit of transportation related news is the ongoing evolution of California’s High

Speed Rail project. This past year has seen a significant turnover in executive and lower

level staff at the High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA). This new leadership recently rolled

out a significantly different business plan with major implications for our south county

area. The short version of the story for our area is that HSRA is now focusing on creating

an electrified multi-track rail line from Gilroy to San Francisco with targeted operating

speeds in the 110 mph range on tracks intendent to be shared with Caltrain and

primarily within the existing Union Pacific/Caltrain rail right-of-way. Estimates of the

required width of this right-of-way range from 60 to 100 feet depending upon

engineering assumptions and ongoing negotiations between HSRA and Union Pacific

(which owns the current tracks and right-of-way). We continue to participate in many of

the meetings at which these matters are discussed and are working with HSRA to bring

another open-forum discussion to Morgan Hill sometime in July or August.

Transportation, housing availability and housing costs continue to be major concerns

affecting business vitality in our region. We are doing what we can to be productive

participants in the conversations and decisions which impact these areas. Please keep

letting all of us here at your Chamber of Commerce know your thoughts on these topics

and anything else of concern to your organization.

Thank you for your membership, support and time.
