His father’s name is Fred and mother is Chris. Jim graduated from Midland High School where he was involved in Band. His Eagle project was working with the Museum of the Southwest, they had an arrow head collection that needed sorting and cataloged. Jim received his degree in Petroleum Engineering in the Colorado School of Mines. His greatest challenge was the size of his troop; it was a large troop with 5-6 patrols and 6- 8 boys per patrol. Fitting in when he didn’t know anyone was very difficult. Second challenge was keeping engaged over time. His greatest memory is wrapping a canoe around a log on the Rio Grande on a father and son canoe trip and becoming stranded on a rock. His father floated on down the river as he should with his feet in front of him. It took a couple hours of rescuing from those involved to retrieve him from the rock and safely get him on down the river. His favorite merit badges were First Aid, and Rifle and Shotgun. One of his favorite camping trips was when he and his brother with some friends went backpacking at Bonito Lake near Ruidoso. Also he loved backpacking in Dog Canyon which is in the Guadalupe Mountains. Jim Newman has enjoyed being an assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 152. Find The Right Tool Have you ever noticed how many types of hammers there are? They are available in a dizzying variety,

differing in size, weight, length, and materials, each one appropriate for the intended job. . Sophisticated techniques for making a charitable gift are becoming popular and common as more and more

people learn about the benefits they can create for themselves and Scouting. The chart below provides a starting point in understanding the basic features of several popular planned

charitable gift arrangements. While it is impossible to list and describe all the options you might consider, we hope this information will point you in the right direction, helping you identify some options that you’d like to investigate further. More detailed information is available online at www.bsagiftplan.org, and from Scouting’s staff of experts. GENERATION CONNECTION

W here are you from? Have you ever w o n d e r e d

where you came from? No, not what city you just moved from or what school you recently attended, but the roots of your family. The Boy Scouts of America, in conjunction with the Arbor Day foundation, would like to extend an invitation to participate in the Generation Connection program being conducted as part of the 100th anniversary celebration. Each Scout, leader, or family member interested in becoming involved with the program can review the details on scouting.org, and go to the 100th anniversary site for information on the program. It is simple. Have your family, or group get together to plan and trace your roots. Get a family tree going, and have a party with the family to talk about the tree. Once this is done, contact the Arbor Day Foundation and buy a tree to plant to help perpetuate the family and symbolically grow your tree together. The cost of the Arbor Day tree is only $20.00 and will be a great way for the family to remember what they did to grow together, trace roots, and develop the “Family Tree” at the same time the BSA grows towards its next 100 years. The Arbor Day foundation is also linked to the Boy Scout site www.Scouting.Org. Feel free to contact the Midland Scout Office, (432) 570-7601, or Call Bill Houston for more Information (432) 634-0063.

Are you always wondering what you can do to motivate your unit? Do you ever think of things that can be completed to help the older scouts stay involved in the Boy Scouts of America? Well now is the time to “Get into the Game!” The 100 anniversary Celebration for the Boy Scouts of America has a wonderful set of ideas that can be set up for an event, or fundraiser, or even a future merit badge. Geocache- What a way to go. The program is set up to help teach GPS navigation, and install a game to the learning. This program is designed to accommodate the particular types of units in the BSA. Your unit may be a Pack, a Troop, or a Venture Crew. It may be a group of volunteers, or just some adults that have mastered the world of navigation through the use of a compass or the stars, and want to take on the new twist and utilize technology to help them find their way, and to entertain along the journey. You ask yourself, “Well how much will this cost?” This is up to the individual. It can be done for next to nothing, or can be set up as elaborate as the organizer chooses. Go to www.GEOscouting.com, and explore the possibilities that are available to your plans. Our council is participating in the local programs that are set up by the BSA to assist units in the Fun of Geocaching. We will organize some events in the early spring to utilize the Geocacheing set-up. We will set a plan for some Geocacheing in conjunction with our Ten Commandments hike, we will be setting up a “Trail to Eagle” campaign that will take each group from a location to several Eagle Scout projects within the respected community, and we will also have some Pinewood Derby cars “tagged with a label, and send them off to the BSA to participate in the Geocaching event for Cub Scouts-“Race into 2010.” Several participation coins will be available as rewards for the scouts that complete the courses, and will allow the participants to enroll in the national award program. If you have a desire to help out in the Geocaching for The Buffalo Trail Council, or would like more information on this please contact your District Commissioner, or Bill Houston, at (432) 634-0063, or by email at [email protected]
