RICHARD was a farmer of some note in Devon, at East Yard also at New How

farm, Peters Harland. He left Devon for Canada in 1866 with his wife and el,~ven

children and travelled first to Chatham, Ontario, then to Exeter, Ontario aJd

finally in 1868 settled in Hibbert Twsp near the town of Mitchell, Ontario.

According to ROY, ETHEL & LAURA BALKWILL of Staffa, Ontario & also confirml!d

by SARAH ETHEL KEYS BALKWILL of Weyburn SK., RICHARD was murdered by 3 men

while returning to his farm after a visit to the Post Office in Mitchell to

pick-up money sent from Devon. He had stopped for a drink and chatted with the

locals. The 3 strangers listened in and waylaid him. His horse went home &

this alerted his family who found his body on the bank of a near-by stream. I

visited this spot accompanied by ROY BALKWILL & took snap shots in the SUffiffiHi

of 1985 & also spent an afternoon with the BALKWILLS of Staffa.
